Review: Primal Carnage

January 26, 2013 / Dave Taylor / Video Game Tips / No Comments

What do you get when you take a team of specialist mercs with nets, flamethrowers, tranquilizer rifles and grenade launchers and tell them to survive against a ravenous horde of dinosaurs? Primal Carnage. Lukewarm Media’s dino debut game released late 2012 on the PC (via Reverb publishing) with quite the roar, but at its release, was simply riddled with game-breaking glitches. Now that this unusual player-versus-player title has more or less come out of its infantile beta stage, is it worth it?
Well, Primal Carnage is what happens when rock-paper-scissors shooter combat meets Left 4 Dead and Jurassic Park (minus the zombies)…

Review: Hotline Miami

January 15, 2013 / Dave Taylor / Video Game Tips, Windows 10 Help / No Comments

Once in a while, a name – in this case, Dennaton Games – comes out of nowhere with an indie powerhouse packed into a little package. Through Devolver Digital, Dennaton released Hotline Miami on PC in October of 2012, and it’s quickly become one of the more surreal and memorable experiences available in independent gaming.

melee-computer-gameDoes the idea of 64-man medieval battles excite you? Do you wish you could be a knight and charge at your enemies with a greatsword? How do I buy a PC computer game on STEAM?

December 24, 2012 / Dave Taylor / Video Game Tips, Windows 10 Help / No Comments

If you haven’t heard of Steam by now, it’s time you learned! Steam is the largest online distributor of PC games in existence – a massive boon to PC gamers worldwide, and with the Christmas season upon us, your source of easy gifts for your family keyboard warrior.
In 2003, Valve Software, creators of Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Left4Dead and Portal released Steam as a method of centralizing update releases for their published games to make the process easier for people that played their games. When Valve began to sell third-party games through Steam, however, the concept exploded.

Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

December 5, 2012 / Dave Taylor / Articles, Tutorials, and Reviews, Video Game Tips / 1 Comment

The world’s most successful FPS (first-person shooter) franchise returns in its yearly conquest of the gaming market. Call of Duty – Black Ops 2, released on PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and even the brand new Wii U follows in its predecessor’s footsteps, struggling to continually introduce creative gameplay into the somewhat exhausted Call of Duty formula. Developed by Treyarch and published by Activision, Blops 2 (or, if you prefer, the somewhat less illustrious “BO2”) wrestles with some of the same old problems, but succeeds in introducing new features and a new feel.
Single-player fans of Call of Duty, beware! The campaign in Blops 2 breaks a lot of the rules you’ve gotten used to over the course of the franchise. A new level of focus on a “cinematic experience” is clearly present in every mission, and the downside to that is
that the player is much more frequently, though briefly, robbed of control. You are unable to act while intermittent scripted animations take place showing you holding a conversation with a fellow soldier, barely leaping out of the way of gunfire, etc.

“Blades of Time” Insider Tips for Outbreak Mode

October 29, 2012 / Dave Taylor / Video Game Tips / No Comments

Blades of Time (PC, Mac, PS3, Xbox 360), the Gaijin Development hack-n-slash that I reviewed previously [Review: Blades of Time], has a fascinating trick up its mediocre sleeve that merits close attention.
Amidst the common selections of “New Game” and “Options” on the main menu, the word “Outbreak” appears. Outbreak mode is a multiplayer addition to the otherwise-singleplayer game that not only defies the convention of Blades of Time’s story mode, but possesses a surprising level of depth.

Great Games for Sale, from Steam

July 16, 2012 / Dave Taylor / Video Game Tips / 1 Comment

If you either A) don’t play PC video games, or B) live under a rock, then it’ll be news to you that Steam has begun its absolutely massive summer sale. This year, though, the insane discounts you can get on games on Steam is more convoluted than ever. No one wants to buy a game for 50% off if they know it’s going to be 80% off in a few hours. How do you save as much as you can while you’re saving as much as you can?
After four years as a Steam user, I’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks to beat the system!
