Did someone hack into my Amazon account?

March 6, 2010 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics, Spam, Scams & Security / 1 Comment

I’m concerned about an email I just got from Amazon.com saying that an order I’d placed had been cancelled, but I haven’t placed an order for months. Did someone break into my account that I got the message “Amazon.com – Your Cancellation (2706-81146-4342895)”

Webmail mailbox exceeds storage limit warning email? Huh?

July 20, 2009 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics, Spam, Scams & Security / No Comments

I just got email from my system administrator saying that my Webmail account is out of space. This is really confusing, though, because I don’t access my email via the Web. Is this legit or some sort of scam or phishing attempt?

1000x returns on your stock purchase? You’ve been scammed.

June 16, 2009 / Dave Taylor / Business Advice, Spam, Scams & Security / No Comments

I got a so called business opportunity a few weeks ago on a company that is supposed to give 1000-2000 times returns. I did not go overboard and I did like the company the PR person was selling. Since I bought the stock (there was about 3 million sold in 3 days) the stock has had limited liquidity. In fact 0 buying most days. My question is is this a good or bad sign?

Visiting my site may harm my computer? What the heck?

May 9, 2009 / Dave Taylor / Articles, Tutorials, and Reviews, Computer & Internet Basics, Spam, Scams & Security / 4 Comments

As a contributing author to a weblog about South Africa’s upcoming World Cup 2010 (see The South Africa Project) I was rather surprised the other day when I went to log in to our Wordpress blog, just to see the following warning in my Web browser:

website malware warning

What does it mean? How can we get this sort of warning from our own site, without ever opening up anything or getting any indication that we’d be hacked or compromised?

Is email from “Facebook Notification Center” legitimate?

March 3, 2009 / Dave Taylor / Facebook Help, Spam, Scams & Security / 2 Comments

I got the strangest email, unlike anything I’ve seen from Facebook, telling me that I have a message to pick up on the site, but not giving me any of the message. Then it included a weird URL at which I was supposed to log in (even though I am already logged in to Facebook) so I could pick up the message. I stopped and decided I’d check with Guru Dave. So, is it legit?

February 25, 2009 / Dave Taylor / SEO & Marketing, Spam, Scams & Security / 3 Comments

I am talking to a search engine marketing company that guarantees I will be placed in the top 3 sponsored positions on search engines. This sounds like a pretty good deal — should I go for it?

How to avoid buyer scams on Craigslist?

January 7, 2009 / Dave Taylor / Amazon, eBay, and Online Shopping Help,, Articles, Tutorials, and Reviews, Spam, Scams & Security / 5 Comments

I was trying to sell an old laptop on Craigslist and got so confused trying to differentiate between legitimate and scam offers. For example, one guy from France offered to send me a money order and let me cash it before I sent out the computer, and was willing to pay more than I was asking. Another said he was happy to pay via Paypal if I just sent him my Paypal account ID. Were either of those legit? If not, how do the scams work?

Is this Orkut friend request legit or phishing?

December 9, 2008 / Dave Taylor / Spam, Scams & Security / 1 Comment

I’ve just recently signed up for orkut and am wondering if the “friend requests” from people I have never bumped into before are legit or not. I’ve sent you the invite: can you tell me how to know whether it’s a phishing attempt before I actually click on a link?
