This might be a bit too specific, but I can’t figure out how to have my PC see my new Motorola RAZR V3c via the bluetooth system. My PC has bluetooth, but it never sees the phone. Suggestions?
Bluetooth is extremely cool but it’s pretty tricky to get things working the first time, so I can understand your frustration. The trick is that you need to put your phone into bluetooth broadcast mode, then launch the Windows XP Bluetooth Setup Wizard, then it should work.
Let’s go through all the steps!
First off, if your PC has bluetooth, you should have an icon on your desktop for “My Bluetooth Places”. Click on it, then launch the Bluetooth Setup Wizard. You’ll see:
You’ll want to choose the second option, “I want to find a specific Bluetooth device and configure how this computer will use its services.” Click next and your computer will start looking for your Bluetooth device.
Now you’re ready to switch to your RAZR phone!
Here’s what you need to do: Click on the Menu option, then move over to Settings & Tools (the wrench and hammer icon) and move down to option #8:
Select Connections, then Bluetooth and choose Setup from the Bluetooth Link screen:
At this point you want to choose Find Me, at which point your phone will then be discoverable for 60 seconds:
At this point, switch back to your PC, click on the “Search Again” button and after a few seconds, your PC should see your Motorola RAZR V3c:
Looks good!
Click on the icon for the phone, then click on “Next” and you’ll be prompted to prove that you are in control of the device by being required to enter a passkey on the PC, then enter it again on the phone. It’ll look like this:
I entered “13579” as my PIN Code, then clicked on “Initiate Pairing”.
Now, back on the cellphone, here’s what’ll suddenly show up:
My PC is ingeniously called “1866-6GU” but yours will hopefully have a nicer, more mnemonic name. Click on “Yes” on your cellphone, then you’ll be asked to enter the passkey again, this time on the phone:
Again, I entered “13579” and clicked on “Ok”. The phone flashes a “connected” screen and it’s connected!
On the PC, you’ll now be able to choose which service or services you’d like to enable. I only allow OBEX, the file transfer protocol:
Phew! Almost done! Click on “Finish” and now your “My Bluetooth Places” includes a shortcut link to your phone! Chose it and you’ll suddenly be seeing the file system on the phone itself:
That’s all there is to it. You can download free ringtones, free wallpapers, or even grab files from your phone onto your computer by simply using drag and drop on your Windows computer.
This is an incredibly detailed tutorial, but I hope it helps you get your RAZR and WinXP computer working happily together!

Hey… I have done everything that you’ve posted… I’ve even successfully switched the versions of S/W… I still dont get the OBEX option that you get. I have bluetooth… I have everything. Is there maybe a way via the USB cable?
I have the v3m and was able to transfer pics from the phone using the free BitPim software (available for Linux, OSX, or Windows) from http://www.bitpim.org and a regular mini usb cable. I’m not sure of the compatibility with the v3c, but it sure helped me out!
I have the verizon Razr V3m and Im having quite some trouble with USB data transfer and bluetooth. I do have bluetooth on one of my laptops and it works fine but I follow the steps and when i get to the Bluetooth Service Selection part the OBEX File Transfer does not even appear there. Please help. This is tough stuff.

Interesting posts – I have a V3c RAZR – GATW 01.15.04. I found the Hand Set Manager from Mobile Action Technology Inc (www.mobileaction.com) software to allow file and photo transfer to computer only, and contacts & messaging with sync. Although this must be done with there cable, Costs $50 and only 4 out of the 10 functions work with this version of phone. Not being able to xfer files TO the phone turned me away from it, but if you need to xfer to your PC it will work.

Is there any 3rd party software that can allow the transfer of pictures? DataPilot (http://www.datapilot.com/phones_motorola.htm) doesn’t seem to support V325. This one http://www.elitextreme.com/mov3usbdaca3.html claims it can, not sure what software it uses.
Re: Posted by: Brandon at April 4, 2006 02:40 PM
I tried it on the Motorola V325 with Phone tools v3.28, it doesn’t work. Multimedia function doesn’t appear at all. I cannot download photos from phone to PC. Thanks.
I have a question:
Im new with the V3c from verizon and my version is S/W GATW_05.02.00R. Am i able to use MPT? and does verizon sell this application? I really need help here. Thanks
Hi Dave, in response to your feedback regarding, “Sync Motorola RAZR V3c with Windows XP via Bluetooth?”… The error I get is, “File transfer not enabled”. I have been reading plenty of articles and they all seem to say that it can’t be done with the V3C. Perhaps I should be a bit clearer. The firmware version I have is GATW_01.15.04 I read that GATW_01.15.04P would allow me to transfer files but the Verizon store said only if I had the Pink RAZR??? Help!!! Thanks..
I bought a USB Dongle from “Cyber Blue” (Cheapest i could find) and installed the included software. I tried to use the native software that came with the Adapter but it has not worked. For some reason it cannot connect. I am trying to find the Bluetooth Setup Wizard on Windows XP (SP2) but i can’t seem to find it. Are there any other programs you recommend that might be able to help me connect and transfer my pictures from my V3c?
I had a v3c and it transfered files back and forth as it should. on the 5th of May the phone met its demise in my pool. Once replaced I was stoked all my contacts were recovered and I had a phone that was upgraded. Now I’m not so stoked, I have version .04 and my computer gives me an error message of “remote device does not support service”. This is Chapped. I am going in to the verizon store tonight to get some answers on this.
I just bought the pink razr from verizon and this isnt a huge deal but the wallpaper doesn’t show up on the front of the phone, it only shows up on the home screen. The front shows everything except where the wallpaper should be is orange and its kind of annoying after paying for everything on the phone to work…is there some way to fix this or is it just a problem with the phone?
Re: Razr V3C (Verizon) GATW_01.0F.03 and all the good stuff locked out.
The only way I got anything to work was to flash back to V .02 using rsd lite 2.5 (from http://www.cyguru.com/RSD_Lite.zip ) and
GATW_X_01.0F.02P_PRIhh14145_SuperUpgrade_02_BOOT6500_X_R21.1_V1.8.1P.shx (can’t remember where I found it).
Easy directions from http://whatsbruin.net/2006/03/25/software-downgrade/ (even a dummy (me) could make it work.
Please share….
tnx

Okay, I have purchased a Bluetooth USB key, installed WIDCOMM drivers and successfully paired my phone with the computer. When I try to locate services through bluetooth on the phone, it cant find any. However, my friend has the same phone and uses his bluetooth which is built-in on his laptop and he is able to transfer files with no problem. My S/W version is GATW_07.03.01P and my phone carrier is Bell Mobility in Canada. Help?
John
Hey – I have a Motorola razor (V3c) w/Verizon service. I have to thank the hints on this message board for getting my multimedia studio working. It’s really cool to be able to crop and fade/in out any of my favorite MP3s and then use them as ringtones.
I installed Motorola Phone tools, then **avoided** the liveupdate to a newer version. This allowed me to see a darkened/disabled icon for multimedia studio, which wasn’t even present in the updated version. I then just followed Brandon’s post to change the model to CDMA/e815m. The multimedia studio icon lit up. It works great!
If you do the liveupdate, you see a model of the phone you have (in my case the razor), but there isn’t even an icon for multimedia studio…. which is what I bought the software for in the first place. Maybe it’s possible to use liveupdate now that I have the multimedia studio working and not lose it, but I’m not going to mess with it.
Hey Neal – how do I go about flashing my RAZR to a previous version of the firmware?
Thanks,
Adam
hey guys .. i am new v3c owner as well.
The only difference is that my carrier is telus mobility (Canada) and not verizon ..
anyways, my telus version v3c razr has OBEX File transfer, however my previous phone, Moto V710 (similiar to e815) had all bluetooth services crippled. I hate it out how carriers can do that. With regards to what everyone has said, I’ve been transfering pics/mp3s/etc. to and from my pc easily with no problems. I’ve done a few v3c;s before I had my own to do and have had no problems at all.
Just a few things:
Dave Taylor – great post . I never knew how to use windows xp and establish a bluetooth connection with the v3c. I use Motorola Phone Tools. Question. Did you not have to download the drivers for the v3c before you could even recognize it in Windows XP?
Brandon: The post you created explaining how to use it with Motorola Phone Tool. GReat as well. Couldn’t have explained in shorter and as clear as you.
Devansh- you said you chose the e815m. you need to download the drivers for the actual motorola razr v3c. you should then see this model as a choice to choose from, and thus not have to ‘fool’ it by trying e815m. Search the net and you will find the drivers. I did about a month ago.
Thanks Mark – yes what you wrote is how I understand it. And I verified that my phone is using S/W version GATW_01.0F.02. I know at this version, I am OBEX enabled, because I have no trouble browsing the device when using OS X.
It’s just strange that on the Windows XP side, the only service that appears to be available is DUN. I can’t even find the screen that Dave Taylor has pasted above where you get to choose the service.
I suppose it’s possible that since I am running Windows XP on a MacBook Pro, that I am using drivers written by Apple for the bluetooth device on my MacBook Pro. And thus, maybe that driver has some differences in how I can select services from my phone? That doesn’t sound right to me …
When it comes to the Verizon V3C and Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers…
To check which version you have… On the phone…. Menu -> Setting & Tools -> System -> Device Info -> Other Info -> S/W Version
GATW_01.0F.02 Initial Verizon release version. Either by “accident” or for some other reason, the ability to do Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers as well as make use of the MultiMedia Studio (aka MMS) features of Motorola Phone Tools (aka MPT) are ENABLED, and no hacks/seem edits are needed.
GATW_01.0F.03 current Verizon release version. There are NO release notes as to what was fixed. HOWEVER Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers do NOT work and it appears the actual CODE has been removed from the phone. Also, the ability to use the MultiMedia Studio features of MPT are now DISABLED on the phone, BUT a seem edit will fix this (Seem 2742, Bytes (h) 90, Record 1, Offset 6A, set Bit0=1 or “check the box”).
Now, when it comes to the recently released .04 firmware update..
OBEX File Transfer and MPT’s MultiMedia Studio capabilites with .04, depend on what your phone had BEFORE it was upgraded to .04…
in other words…
.02 or .02 directly upgraded to .04 = BT OBEX File Transfers & MPT’s MMS works.
.03 or .03 directly upgraded to .04 = BT Obex File Transfers are NOT possible, and MPT’s MMS works only after Seem Edit.
Funny. I own a MacBook Pro, with Windows XP running on it using Boot Camp (beta).
I flashed my Verizon RAZR V3c phone to a previous firmware and am able to do file transfer when my MacBook Pro is running OS X (using info I found on this site as well as others). However, I cannot transfer files when in Windows XP.
So it seems that even with previous firmware where Verizon did not block bluetooth OBEX, it still doesn’t work on Windows XP?
“Confused”, just about any bluetooth peripheral for your computer will work. I have looked at a variety of USB “dongle” style Bluetooth devices at CompUSA and similar and they’ll work great. You should be able to get a decent one for about $30 or so. Here’s an Amazon link to one, for example:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006B7DB/ref=ase_davetaylor/102-8679961-4741706
That’s a D-Link adapter for about $35 that’d work great for either a Mac or PC.
I understand everything about your tutorial given above, but i am still confused as to what kind of Bluetooth device that i need to buy for my PC so i can actually connect to the phone? Any suggestions as to what i should get?
I have been reading a lot about the Motorola V3c from Verizon lately. I purchased the phone with a new plan not long ago, and i am looking to move my photos and other things to my PC. Now im wondering if this is even possible. Is there any way to transfer the photos and such to a PC whether it be by a Bluetooth connecter or the USB connecter? If so, which ones?
So much for Verizon. I was planning on getting the v3c as an upgrade (you know, get a discount on a new phone, sign up for 2 years.) This is a deal breaker. My contract is up in November. I’ll be changing carriers. I understand if they have a committment to that get it now crap, but I’ve never used it, and never will. Costs too much for what you get.
Thanks, Dave. I’m not sure you intended on hosting a verizon-bashing web site, but I for one am appreciative of the information.
Guys, let’s all of us call Verizon and complain about this. Having bluetooth was one of the main reasons that I bought the RAZR and it really sucks that they have disabled it.
Are there any new models of Motorola RAZR planned for 2006 that will be operable with Verizon that will go back to using the Motorola programs, rather than the really poor Verizon programming changes.
Thanks!
Sigh, time to switch carriers. This Verizon crap is getting old. How shortsighted.
I wrote to Motorola about the Calendar problem and this is what they had to say:
“Regarding your inquiry, unfortunately the Verizon V3c and V325 does not have the calendar feature with Motorola Phone tools because this phone has a different software interface that generates problem during the calendar synchronization. We are working with Verizon to get the phone software updated in order to make that feature available.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.”
I tried what Brandon said using MPT and switching it to think it was talking to e815m but couldn’t get that to work either. I have a razr v3c from Verizon and am really annoyed that they cripple phones like that. Anyone else have any luck without flashing the phone?
For those of you interrested in bluetooth verizon phones, the Nokia 6256i is mostly un-crippled by verizon and the Moto815 is easily hacked.
Whoops.. sorry about my first post.. i didn’t get it quite right. i didn’t have my phone infront of me to try out what i was saying. So here goes again. Once you get Motorola Phone tools working with the V3c click in the middle of the circle on the phone “Menu” button. the do Setup->General Setup. Click the Communications tab. Then click change modem button. Then select the Motorola USB Modem. Click next. Check the box that says “Do not automatically detect the driver. Select from a list” then click next. Click Motoral CDMA and select the E815m under device model. Then next and click finish. Now you should be able to do all the multimedia studio stuff.. and then disclaimer about the Calendar still applies… There.. now i hope that works for ya
I actually found a way to use the motorola phone tools to get pics off the phone and to use all the other features the MPT has to offer. I wish i could remember the site to give the person credit for this. but here goes:
Once you have the phone tools installed open er up. Bring up the menu then go to Setup->General Setup. Now click the communication tab and then click the change modem button. When asked to select a device click add.. then just hit next until asked to specify a modem. Then choose the Motoral E815m and finish up. Now you should be able to click on the multimedia studio icon and open that up and get all your pictures and even create ringtones and all that. But i also read that the calendar doesn’t quite work, so dont click on that icon.. Hope this helped some

Chuck, what was the third party program? I just need to get a photo off this damn phone, it’s too big to e-mail. AAAARGH. Why, Verizon, Why?
Thanks steve I’ve been trying to like my razr over the computer through usb (using motorola phone tools) but that doesn’t seem to work. The only solution I have found was using a 3rd party program and I was only able to transfer pictures from my phone to my computer. I know if your flashback your razr to a previous software version the bluetooth and usb transfers would work but its not worth the risk of damageing the phone. Does anyone know if verizon will or can be forced to enable data transfer. I heard of a similar problem which ended in legal action being taken.
Chuck, I purchased a bluetooth adapter and have the same software version as you and it does not work. I have been unable to find a “fix” and I am beginning to think there isn’t one until verizon is forced to enable it on this phone as they have on others.
I was wondering if the bluetooth OBEX link would work with my verizon razr (I plan on buying bluetooth for my laptop) I have S/W Version GATW_01.0F.03
I specialize in wireless connections with mobile phones, and according to the information that I currently have, Verizon have disabled the Obex/file transfer capability of the RAZR V3c.
They have done this before with other phone models (and suffered), but appear to have done it again.
The short answer to the question “Is there a hack/workaround” is “No”.
In my experience the only option is to reflash the phone’s firmware – which is EXTREMELY risky, and if Verizon are smart they will only allow their branded phones onto the network (ie if you reflashed the firmware with another operators firmware, the Bluetooth might begin working but you won’t be able to operate on the Verizon network). And of course you’ll void any warranty.
Alas, I don’t know how to hack around it. Try using the Bluetooth capabilities, however, as it worked for me. If you can’t get that to work, do check out http://www.howardforums.com/ as they have a lot of really sharp phone folk who do all sorts of amazing things to their cellphones. 🙂
Any way to hack around Verizon’s blocked file transfer. It is outrageous that Verizon wants to charge 25 cents per photo taken off the phone (the cost of a picture message).
Thanks.
Assign a specific ringtone to someone on my Motorola RAZR?
I’m sure there’s a way do to this: how do I assign a different ringtone to specific people on my new Motorola RAZR v3c cellphone? I have Verizon service, if that makes any difference….

I tried your steps and it worked, but it seems that Verizon blocks file transfer capability from my phone, and so having bought and set up a bluetooth adaptor was to no avail. If you know a way around the restrictions, I’d love to know it.
thanks for the info
