“Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther” hits Amazon Top 10

January 1, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Writing and Publishing / No Comments

I don’t know how long it’ll last, but Brian Jepson and I are both delighted to see that the latest version of our popular book Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther (from O’Reilly & Associates) is climbing the charts at Amazon and is currently #8 on the Computer & Internet best sellers list! You

“Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther” is out!

December 20, 2003 / Dave Taylor / Writing and Publishing / 1 Comment

I received a lovely Hannukah present from O’Reilly and Associates this afternoon when FedEx delivered the first copy of Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther. I can’t stress how much it’s improved over the previous editions, with both Brian Jepson and I substantially rewriting major sections, swapping out a chapter completely, and making it even more Mac-centric than it was. Yet it’s still only 168 pages long, and costs about the same as two cups of latté and a scone at Starbucks.

Wrapping up “Wicked Cool Shell Scripts”

December 2, 2003 / Dave Taylor / Writing and Publishing / No Comments

We’ve settled on the covert art – a retro 50’s robot – and the cover copy, and I’ve almost completed the page proofs (only have the games chapter left). This means that the book is only weeks away from being completed, and about a month away from being published and in the distribution channels. And,

Finished page proof checks

We’re very, very close to shipping off Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther to the printers, after my co-author Brian Jepson and I finished going through the entire manuscript PDF with a fine-tooth comb. A number of glitches — all ironed out, of course — and this book is really going to be a

Mac OS X 10.3 Panther is coming! And so’s my new book!

October 8, 2003 / Dave Taylor / Writing and Publishing / No Comments

And if Apple ships the latest version of Mac OS X, 10.3, on 24 October (just a few weeks away!) you can bet that the Panther version of “Learning Unix for Mac OS X” isn’t too far behind. It’s worth noting that we have made quite substantial revisions and updates to the book, including structural changes, replacing some chapters with more interesting material, and not a page has gotten by unchanged.

New edition of “Creating Cool Web Pages” coming

August 23, 2003 / Dave Taylor / Writing and Publishing / No Comments

For those of you who have read my book Creating Cool HTML 4.01 Web Pages, or any of its five previous editions, I’m starting to sketch out the contents of the next major revision of this title and would be delighted for any reader feedback. Specifically: what did you like the best? What did you think was the most confusing? What topics did you feel were covered insufficiently? Did you feel like you had to get another HTML/CSS/JavaScript/Graphics book to finish your site?

Changes and updates to “Learning Unix for Mac OS X”?

June 26, 2003 / Dave Taylor / Writing and Publishing / No Comments

Now that Steve Jobs and his band of merry programmers have released the first developer preview of Panther (aka Mac OS X 10.3), it’s time to revise my popular O’Reilly book Learning Unix for Mac OS X for all the changes.

Suggest Topics for the next edition of Cool HTML

May 27, 2003 / Dave Taylor / Writing and Publishing / 3 Comments

I have begun exploring possible updates and changes to my popular book Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages, notably including a discussion of xhtml and some information about online validation systems. What else should I include? Please add your two cents to ensure that the next edition (the sixth!) will be the best possible. Thanks!
