Dave, it’s hard not to notice that tons of sites on the Web now have Google AdSense adverts on them. You could say that those little 3-line text ads are becoming ubiquitous. But my question is: does anyone make any money with them? I mean, even enough to pay for a nice dinner every month? If so, man, I could sure use some tips on how to make some money off my Web site. Do you have any recommendations?
Ah yes, the mystical lure of lucre, the possibility that vast riches wait just over the next hill or around the next corner. Not a day goes by that I don’t have some email in my mailbox offering “easy money” or “get rich quick” strategies for business.
Like picking a winning lottery ticket, though, it’s not quite that easy to make tons of money with Google AdSense…
However, it’s surprisingly not that difficult when you learn some insider tips about ad placement and traffic generation on your site.
To start, you should sign up for Google AdSense by clicking on:
then they’ll give you the snippet of code needed to include advertising on your Web pages, allowing you to customize it however you want.
For example, here’s the code I use:
<!-- begin googleadvert --> <script type="text/javascript"><!-- google_ad_client = "pub-7950118917489847"; google_ad_width = 336; google_ad_height = 280; google_ad_format = "336x280_as"; google_ad_channel ="7026605662"; google_color_border = "FFFFFF"; google_color_bg = "FFFFFF"; google_color_link = "000099"; google_color_url = "666666"; google_color_text = "333333"; //--></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"> </script> <!-- end googleadvert -->
Kinda complex and fancy, but you only have to get it working on one page, then you just copy and paste it onto your other pages. If you have a Weblog, it’s even easier because you just drop it into your template and all your pages them magically have the correct code to produce the adverts.
However, there’s a world of difference between having the ads on your page and having them generate revenue for you and, while I rarely recommend information you need to buy versus something that’s free, I’ll offer two links here for you to learn more about how to turn your Google AdSense into a revenue generation system.
The first is my upcoming book The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Growing Your Business with Google, which will be out this summer. Reviewed by Google’s AdSense team and by groups like Wordtracker, it’ll be full of excellent advice and tips for generating lots more traffic to your Web site (a critical prerequisite to actually earning money with AdSense, of course) and will have a great introductory chapter on how to work with AdSense.
The second is an electronic book written by my good friend Joel Comm, called Google Adsense Secrets. It’s $79, but I’ll tell you that it’s really helped me understand how — and why — to change my AdSense ad placements to maximize the ad’s value to the readers and increase the percentage of time that one of you readers clicks on something advertised on the page. That $79 is a drop in the bucket when you implement all the ideas he presents, frankly, and it’ll earn its cost back in just a week or two, I bet!
The Google AdSense terms of service prohibit me from sharing exact numbers with you, but I can tell you that the ads on my Web sites earn more for me than if I had a robot working at McDonald’s full time, and for Joel, well, they earn more than the managers of two or three McDonald’s. His best month to date saw him earn over $18,000 from AdSense. No kidding.
If you want to learn more about his electronic book, you can read his amusing sales letter, but since he has a 100% money back guarantee, you could also just take the plunge and buy the book. Then ten minutes from now you’ll be learning all of Joel’s secret tips.
Oh, and I know that the book is a good one, full of useful tips and all of Joel’s hard-earned insider knowledge because I helped Joel write it as he went along.
George, yes, if you have traffic then you can earn something with AdSense. Whether it’s going to cannibalize your actual client base, however, is a different story. My suggestion: test, test, test. Enable AdSense for a week then pay close attention to how people travel through your site — and what, if anything, you earn — then make sure that the small additional revenue isn’t at the price of a new client or two. Good luck!
Even i added adsense on my website adsense would be addtional revenue. My question is does Google really pay?
The article writen from the Google Search Engine should have been from Clickbank because of the referrals to buy ebooks. The comment about using the help modules were useful so the search continues: How to make money on Google?
You can make tons of money with adsense, all you have to do is find a good niche that you are interested in and keep posting lots of content daily, and one more thing is stop checking your stats or earnings daily until 4, 5 months.
Sandra, it’s hard to have AdSense adverts on your pages if you don’t have a Web site, but I suppose you could try to build something with their AdSense for Search, driving traffic to your private version of Google Search and making a few pennies off each ad clicked on the resultant pages. I think it’d be tough, though!
do you need a website to make money of good adsense?
how much v got when my referred adsense member crossed 100$ when i complate 25 referred member they all crossed 100$ then how much i ll get
I think people get too caught up in ad placement, and lose focus on building more traffic. Traffic is the real key to becoming wealthy from Google AdSense!
Rohan, thanks for the comment. Y’know, I think that one of the things that Joel did well in his ebook is to capture the “common sense” that experts and those folk who spend lots of time in AdSense discussion forums and online marketing and advertising forums already know. Yes, moving your ad into a more obvious spot and changing the color scheme to make it blend in more are “obvious”, but I can’t tell you how many people – even in far more popular Web sites than my own – don’t get it, and are amazed by those sort of “common sense” suggestions.
I dunno if they’re “secrets” that Joel’s selling, but I will tell you that there’s a whole lot of valid market research and data captured in his ebook and unless you already are pretty darn expert on AdSense placement and design, it really can be the case that his book can pay for itself in just a few weeks.
Since you have mentioned Joel Comm in your article:
About his Ebook:
I did feel the “conceptualization? was pretty professional, other than that (like I’ve mentioned it on his forum too) he quotes nothing more than google TOS, “blending of ads? ie tweaking them and of course his experiences with certain ads like the “banner ad? which he says does not work well, and people tend to ignore them at the drop of a hat.
I’d rather prefer to adsense videos by Michael Cheney – he tells you how you can increase that CTR rate, rather than just bring in the revenue via zillions of visitors to your website.
Joel Comm’s Ebook does not quote anything out of the ordinary, most of that information as mentioned by many is commonplace, can be found in google help sections, on ebay and on most forums too, although some “tit bits? is something “you learn everyday?.
Overall, his ebook, left me “unsatisfied? and lacked that punch which I so every much wanted to see and read.
He does not mention that he owns 15+ (my estimation is more) websites, and I feel the “brand name sells? factor is the primary reason he manages to sustain those earnings month after month.
Hes far from being an adsense “guru? just smart enough to latch onto something like google adsense since early 1990s, and that the key reason hes so well known on the net with regards to adsense.

Hello Dave;
My website has a signup box that’s timed to five minutes. At that point a forwarding url kicks in that asks the visitor to reconsider signing up. Problem: Instead of a forwarding url I would like a popup window on the same spot that closes automatically after X time. I have both scripts and individually they work perfect. I don’t seem to be able to incorporate both scripts into one. When I replace the forwarding url with the external popup script, the time count does not work. Any suggestions?
thanks
Lode
