Ever since I got the “Photos “app on my Mac OS X system, it has this annoying habit of popping open every time I connect my iPhone 6. How the heck do I stop that happening?
When Apple decided to merge Aperture and iPhoto into the new Photos app, they made a lot of neat changes, but also seem to have chopped out almost all of the preferences and settings that those programs had. Not sure why they though we’d want less control, but it is rather tricky to figure out how to teach Photos not to grab everything it can off your iPhone every time you plug it in.
Worse, there are no system preferences either, so exploring “System Preferences…” isn’t going to solve the problem.
The secret turns out to be within the Photos program itself, and it’s not in that program’s Preferences either!
Plug in an Apple iPhone and here’s what happens:
Boom! Photos launches with the last import (which happens to be a really cool steampunk spider light).
You might think “let’s check out Preferences…”
No joy. Nothing even close, actually.
Instead, click on the “Import” tab while your phone is still plugged in to your iMac or MacBook:
Lots of photos from your iPhone.
But look more closely on the top left, because that’s where the solution lies:
So there’s the solution. Uncheck Open Photos for this device, quit the program, and you’re good to go!
Apple is unreliable – five minutes after I complained in my previous comment the source drive is recognized and the trash application does NOT open.
Well done Dave.
You are right – unclick the box and you will no longer be pestered by “Photo” and your inserted SM card whatever, will appear on ‘FINDER” (a very very inferior deliberately set nasty default application for “finding” things on apple)
What if that box is already unclicked?
Then I’d check the box and quit the app. Then start Photos up again, uncheck the box again, and quit. The idea is to overwrite the preferences file so that it’s in a known state. Good luck!
