When I look at my videos on YouTube, I see that some have the green dollar sign symbol indicating that they’re being monetized, while others do not. How do I turn on monetization for all my YouTube videos?
I’ve also noticed that while I thought I had my default set up for my YouTube channel — AskDaveTaylor, naturally! — so that every video I uploaded would automatically be marked for monetization (which means that it’ll have advertisements added as a way to help cover the cost of production, etc) in the last few months that seems to not be something that’s part of the default settings. As a result, every so often I remember to check and am surprised and dismayed to see that the last 5, 10 or more videos are running without advertisements.
It’s easy to fix the problem and enable monetization for your videos on YouTube, but you have to make the change video by video, there’s no easy way to “select all” and “enable monetization”.
So here’s the scoop…
To start, here’s a video that isn’t being monetized, and one that is:
See the little “$” symbol associated with the first video, the Case Logic LoDo Computer Backpack review? Compare it with the “$” symbol that’s in a green circle with the ZAGG Slim Book keyboard review: The green circle means it is being monetized and the “$” without the green means it ain’t earning you no green, if ya know what I mean? 🙂
This is confirmed if you move your cursor over the icon:
To fix the video, click on the “Edit” button associated with that particular video.
You’ll be dropped into the “Basic info” tab of your video settings, but click on “Monetization” instead. Here’s what’s shown:
Not much going on, and the wording is a bit confusing, but click on the checkbox adjacent to “Usage policy” and you’ll be able to pop up a menu full of choices:
My suspicion is that this menu is different for YouTube channel owners in different countries and possibly also for those who have different types of channels on the service. For me, that’s what I see, and the choice I want is highlighted: Monetize in all countries.
Once you select that, you’ll be able to pick and choose exactly what kind of ads you’d like to have added to your YouTube videos. Here are the choices:
You’ll have a different set that you prefer but I definitely don’t like the non-skippable ads, so I don’t grant YouTube permission to include them with my own videos. You can thank me later. 🙂
Anyway, that’s it. Click “Save” and you’re good to go for that particular video.
Oh, and if you see something like this associated with a video…
You can’t monetize a video where there’s an outstanding copyright claim, so the “$” has a slash through it. Also, note the tiny chain link icon. That indicates that it’s an unlisted video. Just useful to know…
