I have MusicMatch Jukebox on my computer and it starts automatically. (Windows XP) I do not like it. I much prefer Microsoft’s Windows Media Player. I’ve tried to switch Windows Media Player to the default, and it will work when I open specific music or audio files (and I do tell it to open “all files of this type with this program”), but it goes back to opening MusicMatch when a new file comes along.
The problem you’re seeing is because MusicMatch Jukebox actually installs two additional programs that run on your computer but don’t have any sort of graphical interface. Here’s what Yahoo’s MusicMatch team says about it:
When Musicmatch Jukebox 10 is installed, mim.exe and mimboot.exe are installed on your system. The mim.exe is a GUI-less application that provides much of the functionality needed by the Musicmatch Jukebox as well as improves the start up time of Musicmatch Jukebox. The mimboot.exe is a smaller application used to start mim.exe. Once mim.exe has been started the mimboot.exe application exits automatically.
There are several advantages of the mim.exe application. With very few resources the mim.exe application allows the Musicmatch Jukebox to launch faster. mim.exe will continuously observe your configured Watchfolders and update the library to reflect added and changed tracks even when the Musicmatch Jukebox is not running. Also, when configured to do so, mim provides the capability to auto-launch Musicmatch Jukebox when a portable device is attached to your system.
If these are not desired functions you can disable these processes by editing the registry. You should only attempt these changes if you feel comfortable making registry changes. It is highly recommended that you back up the relevant keys before making any changes. After making these changes, mim.exe will only start when you launch the Musicmatch Jukebox. You will need to edit the registry again after you close the Musicmatch Jukebox to disable the mim.exe process. Currently there are no other ways to disable these functions.
To prevent mim.exe from starting when you log into your OS:
– Open regedit
– Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
– Remove the value with the name MimBoot.
To terminate mim.exe when you close the jukebox:
– Open regedit
– Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\4.0\MainApp
– Change the value for “ShutDownMIM”. Set it to 1
Personally, I think it’s reprehensible that MusicMatch installs these sort of secret background programs that you can’t disable without becoming a Windows hacker and potentially risk breaking your entire operating system. Shame on them for not having an uninstaller script!
Hope you can get this working. Good luck!

When I purchased my Dell Inspiron E1505 lap top in 2006, Music Match was already installed. I have used the music part with little to no problem (copying; creating music CD’s; etc. – BUT – whenever I am in one of my Photo programs (Kodak Easy Share; Microsoft Photo program; etc.) and I try to make CD’s of PHOTOS, the MM burner pops up and stops the process of copying my photos to CD’s and usually freezes up my computer. How – and where – can I stop it from running all the time? I need it OFF when I’m trying to copy photos onto CD’s!
Thank you.
I removed MusicMatch in safe mode — Control Panel, add/remove, no problem….
