Let me tell you about my experience about the Windows XP Crash Update after the 12th of April 2005
- First I had just installed windows xp sp2, and installing all my drivers.
- Installed McAfee? anti virus and firewall plus updated them, where I have a DSL net link
- Then I went to windows automatic update doing all the update,
- After the windows has finished downloading all the updates, I shut down to make all the updates effective on my next restart
- The windows never started again in any mode even safe mode the only thing it did is keeping restarting the computer, after giving a blue screen. With some login module problem
- I could not do any thing but formatting the drive and redoing the previous steps again, where I thought there was a virus what did that.
- But each time I got windows to update to the last update; it crashes with the same symptoms.
- The next few days I have learned the many of my friends have suffered from the same problem, after Auto updating there windows.
- Can you tell us what the hell Microsoft is doing?!
Till then i have disabled my windows ubdate till i find out which update # from Microsoft that does this crash, then i will bypass it.
Phew! This does not sound like a good experience!
As far as I can glean, this appears to be an issue with the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature provided with Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. The solution lies in editing the text file boot.ini on the main partition.
Boot.ini is a hidden file, though, so you need to go through a little work to make it accessible. To un-hide this file, use the command
attrib -r -h -s boot.ini
Look for a switch named /noexecute and change the value to AlwaysOff
Then try your install / update of Windows again.
There’s much more comprehensive information available at these two Microsoft pages too:

That should get you fixed up!
hi to all,
here i have a problem in my system whenever i tend to start my system it opt for time update in bios with blue screen after updating it the system gets started can any one help me to open the windows automatically without opening the bios screen.
Adrian, sure sounds like you picked up a virus or some spyware along the away, sorry to report. I’d run an antivirus app or two and see if you can clean things out. Otherwise — hate to say it — your best bet might be to back up your data files, then wipe and reinstall Windows.
Hi Dave,
A recent update to Windows XP sp3 on my computer has made it nearly useless. The appearance completely changed from the normal blue/green/red theme to a plain grey taskbar, etc. and when starting up an error message appears saying Event Monitor needs to shut down. I can no longer enter my own files (programs like Excel don’t work anymore as they also just give a close/send error report error message) or do anything on my computer. The sound has also disappeared. I tried removing the update in Add/Remove Programs but it doesn’t work and I also tried downgrading to a previous sp3 update using an old update I downloaded a year ago, but permission errors occur. I can’t do anything and it basically blocks me from doing it.
Many Thanks,
Adrian
I had the same problem as you do! and in fact It made me 3 tries to figure out whats wrong! Anyways, I disabled all Windows update and whew.. My PC works fine now and now I can do everything now, Windows update is not that a big deal as long as you know how use protective softwares =D
Gotta Love Windows.
I am a Tech for a small local Govt. We have a SUS server that we use to push out updates. Last week I had several Police Officers plug their laptops into the network to receive updates. So far so good. They used these laptops for a few hours after receiving the updates. However, they shut the laptops down and then tried to restart them and there were major problems. I guess I should mention that we have encrypted the hard drives. The encryption login screen appears as usual and they log in. Then the Windows splash screen appears, then a blue screen flashes and then it goes back to the encryption login screen. The only way around this is to wipe the HDD and do a clean install of the O/S (XP Pro w/ SP2). We have 12 laptops and I’ve had to do this to 7 of them in the past month.
Since we can get past the encryption and get to the WIndows splash screen I can only assume that the problem is NOT with the encryption software.
Does anyone know why this is? Has Microsoft published an update that has known to cause this problem?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Doug.
I forgot to tell you that I’m running Vista on my laptop.

Dave,
My outlook continues to crash on my laptop. I believe it’s due to a Windows update that is set to automatic. I did a system restore to 3 days ago before the last update and my system started running fine again.
The automatic update kicked in this morning and my Outlook crashed with an APPCRASH error message.
Help.
Thank you
Ed
I’ve had similar problems with my machine freezing and crashing, and it dawned on me that it only started happening right after I installed Mcafee, (by request of my ISP)my previous antivirus was Norton.knowing how difficult norton can be to remove it could just have been causing conflicts, so with the help of Dave I removed all traces of it from my C: drive and did the same in the REGISTRY, it meant a lot of restarting but worth it in the end because my machine appears to be working fine again

My windows takes up to 3 mins to shutdown, and if I click restart it takes 3 mins to turnoff and never start again.I disabled all the startup at MSCONFIG,but it was not helpful at all. I also restored the Windows. Here were what happened afterward: After I reinstalled the windows, everything was fine, shutdown speed was okay and also can perform restart. But, after installing Windows updates(there were 84 updates in total), AND HP 2570 all-in-one printer driver, then slow shutdown occured, and restart cant be performed, windows hangs on “ASUS” screen. I dont know it’s windows updates or HP driver. I updated the HP driver and still no good, but it was working good on my old PC without updating the driver. So I guess it was the WIdnows updates? How to fix the problem? Thank you so much for help.
This has got to STOP Mr. Mike DELL! Selling Inspiron 6000 Laptops with missing parts. Many of you having crashes are more likely having memory trouble (because Microsoft and DELL have not done their homework and just sold you JUNK) Inspiron 6000 laptops have motherboard that supports DDR2 memory, so why dell sells these laptops with only one stick of memory is not right, you need two sticks of memory to have the DDR2 to work. Google DDR2 and read yourself, then ask yourself why dell did this to you. Also, onboard video is no good. The ATI add on mobile radeon video card is designed for AMD, also, google ATI mobile radeon X300. This laptop wasn’t even designed right!
I can get this laptop running with XP SP1, but this laptop does NOT like SP2. There’s a sticker on the laptop that says “Designed for Windows XP Professional”. That’s just plain fraudulent!
hi there im wandering why my computer always turns of on me..when im on my computer doing stuff ..sometimes might be once a day or two or more then reboots again..its windows xp..thanks
I’ve had to reinstall windows XP due to the last Windows Update(KB……)on July 31st, rebooting didn’t go past the logo, at the end it flashed a blue screen and rebooted(and kept stuck there whatever last confuguration chosen at the problem screen before boot). It IS the last Windows Update because the same thing happened to me after hours of updating the new installation which again gave me the same phenomenon. I’ve lost an afternoon and evening to this so now I’ve reinstalled the 2nd time and I hold off on the Windows Update till MS fixes this.
The problem is the crapy Mcaffe sadly is the worst antivirus you can buy, full of problems and not too much support.
When you are upgrading your machine to sp2, you need to disable or rmove your antivirus, if not the upgrade fail and can cause many problems.
After the upgrade you can install the antivirus, check for an update version for XPSP2
Hello,
I have installed a fresh windows XP sp2 on my friends laptop (dell inspiron 6000) many times. At least more than 5. Each time it works fine for a few days then starts crashing. I have tried windows 2000 as well and Media center. All of the OS have caused the computer to crash. I am at a loss. Thank you in advance

Let me tell you about my experience about the Windows 2003 server Crash Update after the 8th of Jan 2007
First I had just installed windows 2003 server, and installing all my drivers.
Installed Symantec corporate edition? anti virus updated them, where I have a AIRtell net
Then I went to windows automatic update doing all the update,
After the windows has finished downloading all the updates, I shut down to make all the updates effective on my next restart
The windows never started again in any mode even safe mode the only thing it did is keeping restarting the computer,
I could not do any thing but formatting the drive and redoing the previous steps again, where I thought there was a virus what did that.
But each time I got windows to update to the last update; it crashes with the same symptoms.
Can you tell us what the hell Microsoft is doing?!
Delete the registry entry for windows update and then reboot.
XP SP2 + MCafee.
Mcaffe will not update.
If I disable mcafee at statup (from msconfig)
I get various errors and the machine will not
reboot. Specifically, it ccomplains that the
memory locatins 0x0000000 and 0x00000009 are not readable!
If I boot it with Mcafeee on, and then kill all mc. processes, it works fine…
My mother and I bought the same inspiron dell laptop 2 weeks age, we are having similer trouble after updated computer freezes, when we finaly get the computer to come back up i start safe mode do system restore, we are sure its an update but what one? this last time i noticed the freeze right after i did the be explorer7, but cant be sure yet. Is anyone else having this problem? I dont want to call dell and sit on the phone for 2hr, but i guess i will have to if we get no simple help!
McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 8.0 has screwed up my computer and there is no way to get McAfee to ask for help. I installed the software and received confirmation. The first time I opened the computer after that received a message “—application component missing—-reinstall—“”Error code 7.1.002” Got this three times and reinstalled. Still in serious trouble. Program takes 20 minutes to come on then all kinds of screwy things happen. No printing, can’t get on Internet, computer freezes up—! Tried uninstalling and was successful (I thought). Next time I opened computer there was same softwware. HELP!
mcafee is driving me mad..I cannot update..it will tell me that updates are ready to install..it takes me to the log in site..where i have to log in twice ..first time it tells me not valid ..the second time it tells me i am already logged in..i go to find the instal update but it has gone off my screen by then…i sat 2 days on line mcafee chat..nobody could help ..they promised to ring me and email me with their expert..as yet i am still sitting..i would get rid of mcafee but after paying 90$ i dont see why i should be the loser…
I have the same problem, I have re-installed windows XP Home edition 5 times and when I go online and setup windows update to autoupdate the PC crashes, also I install Mcafee from AOL’s web site at the same time.
The difference with mine is that it re-boots itself but only gets to the splash screen for XP.
Can anybody tell me if there are any other causes for this fault.
Cheers
I had a similar issue when Outlook Express told me my address file was a problem and to reload OE 6. Well, in order to do that with XP Home, I have to load SP2 but if SP2 is already loaded, it will not reload….so I deleted SP2 and reloaded it. This fixed the OE 6 problem, but my computer slowed to a crawl with the CPU reporting 100% usage constantly. Task Manger indicated that the system process and the auto update program were running constantly. When I turned auto update for Windows off, the problem went away. Since auto update in constantly looking and loading updates, it consumes most of the CPU resources. Bottom line, don’t use it
I’m running a windows xp pro sp2, but i dont have the DEP option, due to “hardware design” it says.
and still my computer enters a crash loop everytime i try to install windows update…
help?
upgraded mcafee now my dell running windowsME wont open close or anything. i am lost but will keep trying then will switch to norton.
I have had a similar problem difference is that my machine is now at least 1/2 as slow as it was i did the update online bout the end of April ran OK up untill about 2 weeks ago it has steadily gotten slower my cpu is an HP 514n Pavillian Cel 2.2 ghz 512mem 60 gig HD w/ 1 CD-RW /1 DVD-RW USB Zip but now run maybe as slow as if not slower then my Win 98 AMD K6-2 8 gig HD 256 mem. Any idea’s? thanks
I had almost the same problem.
At about the same date. The computer I had the problem with runs ME. My problem was the McAfee update. It installed a new DirectX controller. It caused freezes after being online (using IE ) after a half an hour or so.\
It didn’t freeze if I was using Firefox. Or after working with the computer for some time and then trying to shut down it would hang.
I restored the computer back before the McAfee update and it worked fine. Then I would Update McAfee and the problem came back. I tried unistalling and reinstalling McAfee
3 times always the same results.
McAfee’s tech people couldn’t figure it out.
I uninstalled their antivirus. And put in Norton. No problems.
There are many programs that can be downloaded from varius websites, including from Microsoft, and many of them say you have to have administrative rights in order to do it.
The results this man was experiencing by installing SP2 for WinXP is not all that unusual. It seems that those who have set up their computers using themself as the administrator have these kinds of problems, including upgrading to SP2.
When I set up my WinXP computer new, I did not declare anyone to be an administrator, and I have no problems at all downloading and installing any programs requiring administrator rights, including SP2.
I very strongly recommend NOT to use Auto Upate to install SP2. Nearly everyone I know, and that\’s a lot of people, who have used Auto Update to download and install SP2, have had problems with the install. I got the CD for SP2, which is free from Microsoft, including shipping & handling.
