Everyone’s so gung-ho about cloud storage being the solution to all your data archive needs, but there’s a dark underbelly to that solution: deleting old material to make space for the new stuff. The problem? Where’s the archive of the older content?
Yeah. That’s a problem.
Here are my thoughts on the topic:

Hi Dave, your subject of cloud storage could be the answer for a lot of concerns for me. I’m starting to use Amazon cloud storage for my large music collection (1500 albums) and starting to use DrivePop for my very large dvd collection (2742 and still growing). I trust Amazon for backing up their cloud. However, since my music goes back to my teens & I’m now a senior I still retain it on my pc. Now, I am starting to convert my large dvd collection (2742 movies) to DrivePop/LiveDrive . I can not do this for my dvds. I have researched companies looking for the ability to store converted dvds and stream to my HDX. The movies seems to be the problem. I want to be able to take advantage to the portability of cloud streaming. My movie collection is legal going back to the days of vhs and laser disc. I would love to have a single solution for cloud storage and still be able to stream to my HDX, but as a senior on social security disability I have a limited budget. If you have any guidance I would be extremely grateful as I feel like I’m grasping at straws. Anxios to read read your comments & additional reader comments
The problem is that while you have legal ownership of the DVD disc itself, you don’t have the rights to rip the movie, even for your own personal use. I think it’s stupid, but I can’t imagine any cloud storage company offering up its space for you. Oh, and 2742 movies at an average of 800MB/film (for a reasonable encode) = an impressive 2.14 TB of space. That’s a LOT of disk space, however you slice it. 🙂
