Can I change the return address of my MSN Hotmail mail?

April 4, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 152 Comments

Dave, I see that you are an expert on Microsoft’s MSN Hotmail service. Can you tell me whether there’s any way I can configure my Hotmail account so that when I send mail from that account, it has a different ‘reply to’ address? That’d be super helpful and keep me with Hotmail!

Invalid or Expired Security Certificate?

April 2, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 426 Comments

Hi Dave. Maybe you can help me with this problem. Whenever I try to go on a site that requires secure log-in, eg. bank, ebay etc. I get a security warning pop-up saying there is a problem with the sites security certificate. It says “the security certificate has expired or is not yet valid” and gives me options to continue yes/no or view certificate. I am operating Windows ME and IE 6, all updated and I also run AVG free anti-virus and spybot regularly. I have searched the web for answers to this and also asked several PPL including my bank’s IT helpline. I have done everything suggested but still get the warning!

My problem is that I’ve started to make my C files Unix-compatible but I can’t find a command for C in Windows that does the same thing as system(“cmd”) for Unix. Any suggestions?

What are Internet Explorer search prefixes?

March 31, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 4 Comments

Dave, a friend of mine was showing off his superior knowledge of Microsoft Internet Explorer (though he, of course, called it “IE” and, once, “MSIE”) and really amazed me when in the Address bar he typed in something that caused it to give us a stock quote for the specified ticker symbol. How did he do that?

How do I cancel my America Online (AOL) account?

March 31, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 569 Comments

Just for fun, I recently signed up for an AOL account through one of those ubiquitous free CDROMS, and now that I’ve poked around a bit, I’ve decided to shut it down. It’s time to return to the real Internet. But I’m a bit stymied. How do I cancel my AOL account?
