I swear I’m going insane: Every time I type in my daughter’s name on my Apple iPhone 6s, it adds a little heart emoticon (emoji). But I don’t want it to do that. What’s going on and how do I disable this super annoying feature?
First off, fair’s fair, props to your daughter for sneaking this change onto your iPhone. It’s not difficult, but still, you aren’t even aware that she’s clearly done something to add what’s know as a Text Replacement onto your iOS device!
You are in luck, though, because it’s easy to remedy or even change the shortcut so that every time you type in her name skulls and bombs show up (or better, now you’ll know how to retaliate if you can get 60 seconds alone with her phone and make your name just glorious every time she types it!)
In preparation for this tutorial, I actually set up a shortcut on my own iPhone that automatically changes all mentions of the name “Susan” to have hearts around it. Lovely in some contexts, not so much in others!
Here I am part way through typing in her name:
Notice there’s no hint or warning that something weird’s going to happen.
One more letter, “N”, and notice the typing correction:
A tap on the space to go to the next word and BLAM! Susan’s just gotten an upgrade on her name:
Nice, but it can definitely drive you a bit bonkers if you don’t know what’s going on or don’t actually want that person’s name highlighted with emoji on every single occurrence!!
To be even more sneaky, imagine how maddening it would be if there was a keyboard shortcut that mapped “susan” to “susna”. It’d become really hard to spell her name correctly. Just thinking out loud, of course, I wouldn’t actually suggest you do something like that to your daughter’s phone! 🙂
To find and delete this particular text mapping keyboard shortcut, go into Settings > General and scroll down to find Keyboard:
A tap on Keyboard and you’ll see a number of different settings and preferences:
You can explore the options shown, but for this task, you’ll need to travel down the Text Replacement choice, and it’ll show you the ones you have set:
As you can see, I have a few, including the Susan shortcut. Sorry, Susan, we’re going to have to axe your entertaining shortcut. To do that, simply swipe right-to-left on that entry:
Tap on “Delete” and your sanity is restored. Want to add new shortcuts? You can do so with the “+” on the top right. When you’re done, just tap the home button and you’re back to normal functionality. Done.
I’m having the same problem and they are not listed in my messages, contacts or on the replacement list. PLEASE HELP!!!!
I have the same problem and there is nothing listed in text replacement. My daughters name is Maddie??I have the same problem and there is nothing listed in text replacement. My daughters name is Maddie??
See!!??
Her name is actually Maddy but voice texting always changes it and adds the two weird emoji‘s. In addition to that, it duplicates everything previously stated up to that point.
Recently, I’ve noticed that it also adds a “?” the end of the name Judith.
It’s driving me insane!
Again, check your contacts list and ensure that you don’t have anyone named “Maddie” that includes the two emoji. Theoretically it should learn if you keep correcting it to “Maddy”. Good luck!
There is nothing on my iphone 7 that allows you to delete this under keyboard? Nothing and that name with the emoji is not in my contacts or any other messages! Still going insane here.
Hello,
I have nothing listed in text replacement. Nothing and it is still adding emoji’s to a name. Please help. So annoying.Thx
Does that person’s name in your contact list have emoji? Or are they listed with emoji in Messages or similar?
NO they are not listed in the contacts and they did not use the replacement text as you previously discussed
