I co-run a group on Facebook and we have a ton of events on the schedule. Sometimes, though, they end up being cancelled. So far, we just add a comment “CANCELLED” but how can I actually cancel them so that they’re not on the Facebook calendar at all?
I’m a big fan of the event scheduling and planning tools on Facebook so I’m glad to hear that you are too with your group. It’s a great way to ensure a lot of people show up at events, and if you subscribe to your Facebook calendar in Google Calendar or Apple Calendar (formerly known as iCal), everything you RSVP for automatically shows up with all necessary details. Super easy! [Handy tip: How to subscribe to your Facebook calendar in iCal or Apple Calendar]
The only thing I don’t like about how Facebook itself handles cancelled events, though, is that it doesn’t have any way for you to actually send people a message about why the event is cancelled. It’d be nice to have “cancelled due to weather” or “speaker is sick” or “venue burned down last night” or whatever.
Assuming you can live with events just *poof* vanishing from everyone’s calendar without an explanation, here’s how to proceed.
First off, jump into your group. For this demo, I’ll show you how I cancelled an event for the Front Range Blogger Meetup group.
Along the top of your group is a navigational bar with a bunch of options:
Choose “Events”. This lets you easily create a new event, but it also shows you all the events currently scheduled:
To cancel this event we need to “zoom in” and get more details about it. This is most easily done by clicking on the event title.
So click on How to Make Your Blog Irresistible! (or the title of your own event, likely not quite the same).
The top of the event page will have a picture — if you uploaded one when you created the event — and some buttons just below:
Click on “Edit” to modify the event or cancel it.
Now you’ll see the pop-up edit window that lets you tweak time, date, location, description, etc:
The most important link is on the lower left corner.
Cancel Event.
Click on it if you’re sure you want to just have this event vanish from Facebook.
You sure?
Really sure?
Really, really sure?
Click “Yes”.
Done.
