Change default app / program to open Windows 10 file?

May 9, 2016 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 2 Comments

Every time I double-click on a graphics file, it’s opened in Microsoft Photo, which is really annoying because it’s a crummy app. I want to have things open in Paint, which offers a lot more useful editing features. How can I change it so that all PNG and JPEG images open in Microsoft Paint on my Win10 laptop?

I know what you mean with your criticism of Microsoft Photo. I can’t really figure out why they bothered to include it with Windows 10, actually, when there are such better programs and when it seems to be so lacking in features that it’s barely more useful than the on-screen editing capabilities on modern digital cameras or smartphones. A mystery. Fortunately the simple and powerful Microsoft Paint is also included in Windows 10, so you can open up your PNG and JPEG files with that program instead and easily crop, resize, and annotate.
