How do I delete a friend list on Facebook?

June 14, 2010 / Dave Taylor / Facebook Help / 2 Comments

How do I delete different list that were created for my friends? Example: my daughters friends, a list was created that says “my crazy step-daughters”. How do I go about deleting something like that? There are more list, this is just an example and no, there are no names/friends in these extra list either.

When I first saw this question I thought that it was a simple task and that you’ hadn’t been looking at Facebook closely enough, but in fact I was wrong: it’s rather a bit more tricky to delete a friends list than it is to create one on Facebook, perhaps reflecting the bias of the company towards us ever moving forward with more connections and more data.
I dunno. Maybe not. 🙂
Anyway, in the good old days, Facebook lists were more useful anyway because you could create a grouping of your friends and it’d be right there visible and clickable without doing any extra work. Nowadays, however, they’re all hidden under the “Friends” link, which you now have to click on to open before you can see them.
Pop over to your Facebook account and on the top left you’ll see something like this:

Click on “Friends” and it’ll open up to show you some options:

You can see here that I have three lists set up: The Criminal Element, Coloradoans, and Family. I’ll click on The Criminal Element and now the news updates from people on that list (who shall remain nameless, thank you very much!) show up, along with the following:

This is where it gets confusing: this is not how you delete the list. Click on Edit List and poke around, you’ll see. To me, this is exactly where a “delete list” option should be present, but I guess I think about user interface design differently to Mark Zuckerberg and his team at Facebook!
Instead, you need to click on Account on the top right and choose “Friends”:

Now you see all the lists you’ve created, along with some additional options:

Click on the list you want to delete and three buttons show up:

Any guesses which to click on? You guessed it! “Delete List”.
One quick verification:

And you’re done, list deleted, mission accomplished!
