How Can I Delete My Phone from My Mom’s Mitsubishi Outlander?

August 1, 2022 / Dave Taylor / Auto Tech Help / No Comments

My Mom’s really upset because every time we both get into her Outlander, the car connects to my Android phone, not her iPhone. I think it’s funny but she wants me to delete my phone from the car entirely. How can I do that?

I was just driving a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander and had to figure out how to delete my phone from the Bluetooth system prior to returning it, so I know exactly what steps you need to go through to accomplish your task before your Mom blows a gasket. I understand her position; my daughter’s phone sometimes takes over the connection in my Mazda in a similar way. Before you delete your phone, however, you might check to see if her model of Mitsubishi Outlander infotainment system supports setting a priority or preferred phone. If so, choose her phone as the preferred unit and that might solve the problem without having to unpair your own phone.

Otherwise, the Mitsubishi system is pretty straightforward for unpairing and having it forget your phone, though there’s one step that is non-obvious because they picked the wrong icon on a particular screen. But let’s start with the main screen and hopefully it’s either the same version as your Mom’s car or at least close enough that the basic steps will be identical.

CONNECTION OPTIONS ON MITSUBISHI INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM

Here’s the home screen on the 2022 Outlander:

Yes, I was listening to Elton John’s song Don’t let The Sun Go Down On Me. I bet you’re humming it right now.

Tap on the “Settings” button rightmost on the digital button row, between the two control knobs. You’ll move to the main Settings for the entire Outlander control system:

Since the phone I’m going to be forgetting isn’t actually with me, the “Phone” button is greyed out: There is no phone currently paired with the vehicle. That’s useful because it highlights that “Phone” isn’t the right button to tap anyway. Tap on “Connections” instead.

Notice on the very bottom the “Favorite (Connects First)” indication. That suggests that you should be able to ‘favorite’ your Mom’s phone and solve the problem.

But instead, let’s proceed with the deletion.

HOW TO DELETE A PHONE FROM A MITSUBISHI VEHICLE

Once you’re on the Connections screen, tap on the “i” symbol associated with the phone you want to unpair and forget. Why it’s an “i” is a bit hard to say as it’s not obvious that’s how you get to the settings associated with the device, but… now you know. Tap on the “i”.

Now you can definitely see how to proceed: Tap on the big grey “Delete” button.

The Mitsubishi system will confirm you want to delete the phone from the system:

You do, right? Then tap on that “Yes” button to proceed…

After a moment or two it will display:

And that’s it. Your Mom will now be happy again and if you ever need to take over her infotainment system again, well, you know how to pair your phone, so go to it!

Pro Tip: I’ve been writing about the tech and devices in your vehicle for many years, including lots of tutorials about how to get the most out of your infotainment system. Please check out my Auto Tech Help area while you’re visiting for more useful content!
