USB Error on Samsung MP3 Player: Now What?

June 14, 2005 / Dave Taylor / iPod & MP3 Player Help / 117 Comments

Dave, I have a Samsung YP-910GS hard drive mp3 player and it reciently stopped working. I tried to reload the firmware but when I connect it with USB the computer says unreckonized USB device. I know the hard drive is a 1.8″ Toshiba, same as in the iPods, but it says the drive is an ATA drive? Is there a way I can check the disks for errors and repair it, if it is corrupted?

Assuming that the processes are the similar to the Samsung 920 player, there are actually two pieces of software that are important for the computer to be able to make use of your player; the firmware and the driver files themselves.

samsung yp910gs.JPG

The firmware is the software that resides on the player. The drivers are a separate entity and are what Windows uses to recognize your player.
For example, when I go to Start –> Settings –> Control Panel –> Add/Remove programs, what I see at the bottom is “YH-920 Drivers and utilities.”
If you reloaded the firmware but not the drivers, you may still have a driver problem. Uninstall the software using the Add/Remove Programs window. Don’t do this manually or using another “remove” tool as exists in some players. That will likely not get rid of everything. Then, take your CD or download the drivers and install them.
It is important to note that the instructions explicitly state not to plug the device in until prompted, or until the install process is finished.
The 920 also shipped with a program called “Recovery Utility” that resets the drivers and the firmware. If this shipped with the 910, this may help. I had to use this once because I disconnected the device without using “safely remove hardware.” It takes about 20 minutes to run, but it did work.
That brings up another important note. Many of us use USB drives or other devices and don’t bother with the “safely remove hardware” function (accessible in your system tray) without any ill effects. My USB drive, my old Rio MP3 player, and my cellphone all fall under this category. However, the Samsung hard drive players REQUIRE you to safely remove the device using Windows before unplugging it. If you don’t do this, your player will crash. This has happened to me; they are telling the truth.

Many thanks to MP3 expert Jeff Lawley for his help on this question

I was having a USB connection problem with my Samsung YP-T9J.
I’d plug in the unit and I would get the USB Connection Error sound.
After searching several sites, I found a suggestion to go into Windows Device Manager, find the player (usually has a yellow error icon) and select “Update Driver”.
When the window comes up, leave it on the “find update automatically” option checked.
Click next… and wait a minute or two.
    BINGO!!
    Problem solved.

Sagar, open “My Computer” and see if the mp3 player shows up as a device. if so, there’s probably a folder called “MUSIC”: drop a few mp3 files there and see what happens when you unplug it and try to play the songs…
Steve, an antivirus scan shouldn’t affect the player at all, they’re supposed to be non-invasive. Did it find a virus and fix it?? Otherwise, same advice, unplug it, plug it in again, then look in My Computer to see if it shows up as a device. Failing that, try opening Windows Media Player and see if it’s a device listed there instead. Good luck.

Dave, My daughter has a Samsung yp-u3 and she put it in the computer to download some songs. It seemed to do fine until she pulled it out, like she had done many times before, but this time it came up with an error text on the screen that said “0xFFFFFF71”. I think it has to do with not releasing it correctly. Can this be repaired?? Can you help me fix it??? Any help would be great, Thanks

Here’s how you fix it for rca H106:
use the user maunal so you know what I’m talking about. I got the FAT error! Plz.. and I could still get the icons. This is how I fixed it. Go to settings and go to advanced press play once only. Plug into computer and it wil recognize it as a flash drive. Completely Format the drive then unplug the player from computer. It will switch back to previous setting automatically. If you need to update drivers and firmware use the auto updater from http://www.voxxsupport.com/images/downloads/autoupdater.exe

I have Samsung K5 with built in speaker and when i plugged it to my PC with USB cable the player turned on displaying fully charged, rather than charging ( what it always displayed)Then I found that my PC doesn’t recognise my player because the icon of my MP3 wouldn’t be seen in my computer folder. Also the window that usually pops out after you plug in the player, did not appear either. I though it was the faulty cable, because it was a bit wrecked so i ordered a new one and it is still not working. What can i do if my PC doesn’t recognise my MP3 player and after plugging in it says fully charged ( which is not for sure because the battery is only partly charged) I can’t download new music onto my player or anything. IT DRIVES ME MAD!!!!PLEASE HEEEELPPPPPPPP
