I’m a member of a lot of different professional networking and association groups on LinkedIn. All good, but I keep getting daily updates from each and want to shut it all off. How do I stop LinkedIn notifying me of group activity?
Like most social networks, LinkedIn wants to be a lot more than a site you visit occasionally, so by default they send you a lot of email notifications of various actions, events and updates. All well and good except if you prefer to have less clutter in your mailbox. After all, you’ll see the same notifications when you do log in to LinkedIn anyway.
Unfortunately, while there’s a lot about LinkedIn that I like, I have to say that I feel they haven’t put much effort into making all the settings and preferences easy to tweak and fine-tune compared to, say, Facebook, which keeps trying to make it easier and more obvious what’s going on with each update released.
But I’ve got your back. 🙂
Start out by clicking on your profile pic — the tiny one — on the very top right of the screen:
As you can see, you’ll want to choose Privacy & Settings.
Click on that and you’ll see four major categories of settings; Profile, Communications, Groups, Companies & Applications and Account. Click on Communications:
Before we go further, allow me to go on a slight tangent by encouraging you to click on Select the types of messages you’re willing to receive on this page.
The result is a surprisingly detailed list of different types of email you can opt to receive or not:
You’ll notice that I’ve filled out the box “Advice to people who are contacting you”. I think that’s a smart move, so before I show you the answer to your question, indulge me and spend a minute looking at this window, deciding what messages and opportunities you want to receive in your LinkedIn inbox, and add a brief “advice” message.
Done? Good.
Now go back to the main “Communications” tab and click on Set the frequency of emails…
Again, all of these categories are worth exploring, but for your query we’ll want to delve into Group digests.
Click on that option and you’ll see a list of your LinkedIn groups:
You can see that “#BOBCM” I have set to a weekly digest email, while “Association Catapult” is set to a daily email digest. “Daniels Speakers Connection” is set to not send me email at all — I can check that one when I log in to LinkedIn — and those are all the choices, as shown in the pop-up menu.
Go through your list, change and update any and all group notification settings, and click “Save” at the bottom.
Done. That’s it.
