I’ve been building up some great playlists on Spotify and would like to share them with my friends. What are my options? I hear that there’s a “Spotify Codes” feature coming soon too?
There are a number of options for sharing your Spotify playlist and I know because I have a bunch of playlists too, including one that’s massive in size and has six subscribers. Six! Where are the millions? 🙂
Anyway, one way to share your playlist is to simply tell your friends to search for it by name and if you add your own name to the playlist it’ll be fairly easy to find. Still that’s kind of clumsy and probably people who don’t know you might be less likely to subscribe if it’s “Mike Smith’s Cool Rock Playlist”, if ya know what I mean?
The good news is that Spotify is ahead of the curve with this, making it super easy to share songs, artists and playlists through a wide variety of means, ranging from text messages to Facebook posts. And guess what? Turns out that Spotify Code are already available and are ready to use!
Let’s start with my Greatest Movie & TV Soundtracks playlist on Spotify:
Your screen will be a bit taller, but I like to chop things down to just show the key elements we’re discussing!
On the above, tap on the “•••” button on the top right. A menu appears with – ta daaa! – the Spotify Code right above it:
Basically, the code is the orange sequence that looks like an EQ curve for your audio gear. Not too bad, really. Take a screen capture, edit it down and you’ve got a graphic you can even turn into a sticker! That’d be handy for bands or musicians that have an ever-growing playlist and want their fans to access it quickly and easily.
Swipe down a bit further, though, because there’s another option labeled “Share”. Tap on that and you’ll see lots of options:
You can see that it’s super easy to share a link to your playlist via Messages, add it to your Instagram Story (what a great idea for a musician!), Facebook Messenger, Facebook itself, Twitter, heck, you can even just grab the URL of the playlist and disseminate it however you want.
Let’s turn this into a Facebook post by tapping on “Facebook” and entering something hopefully enticing:
I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to pop over to Facebook and see what it looks like as a final posting, but suffice to say, it’s easy to accomplish!
The only question left is how the heck do you scan or read Spotify Codes? which is, well, a good question!
Turns out that there’s a camera that can scan these codes, but you need to learn where to find it as it’s not at all obvious. Start by tapping on the “Search” option along the bottom toolbar in the app. You’ll end up here:
Here’s where it’s non-obvious: Tap on the search button along the bottom again and you’ll go to a different search page!
Who knew it logged all your searches, right? More importantly look at the top right: it’s a camera icon. A ha! We found it.
(I told you it wasn’t obvious)
Tap on the camera icon on the top right of the secondary search page and…
Somehow the user interface team at Spotify thought that was a logical place for the Codes scanner. On the bright side, you do now know where it’s located, right? 🙂
