I joined a new group in Google Plus and it’s way busier than all the other groups I’m in, which means it has a tendency to take over my screen and even my pop-up Google Plus notification window. How do I tame the beast without having to quit the group entirely?
Google Plus has done a good job of giving users control over what’s happening on their notifications screen and main feed screen but you’re right, some groups seem to be far more busy and popular than others. I think that’s good, but sometimes it can overwhelm you and make it easy to miss the important content that’s tucked in the middle of yet another wave of posts from the über-group.
Having said that, the way that Google’s designed the notification pop-up window, I don’t think you’d be seeing it overwhelming other content in the same way. It’d simply say “3 new posts” then “9 new posts” then “24 new posts”, etc. but still always just take a single box in the list regardless. If you’re seeing something different, perhaps you’re using a third party notification utility?
On my G+ account, for example, while I’m perusing my email in Gmail I might click on the indicator on the top right of the nav bar and end up with something like this:
You can see that “Great Dads Society” is one of the groups I’m in and it’s listing a new post by J. Donnelly. If there were more, it’d be the same size rectangle, just say “3 new posts: J Donnelly, J Smith, M Doe”.
In any case, if this is what you see and you just want to quit the group entirely, turns out you can do so from here. See that weird green and white circle to the right of the group notification box? Move your mouse over it and…
Click on the “x” and you just quit the group.
Probably a bit Draconian if you just want the notifications to slow down a bit. 🙂
Instead, go to Google Plus in your Web browser and find the applicable group page. Mine looks like this:
Look on the left side, under the group name. It says “Notifications on” and adjacent to that is a small gear icon.
That’s what you seek. Click on it and a series of menus appears:
As you can see, you can leave the group (uh, “community”) and you can disable group updates showing up in your home stream entirely by unchecking “Show posts in Home stream”, but there’s a third option, changing the amount of updates that appear.
There are three choices for amount more, standard or fewer. Since you want to slow down the influx of updates and posts from your G+ community, simply choose “Fewer” and you’re good to go.
There. That wasn’t too hard, was it? 🙂
