December 7, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Web Site Traffic Tips / 3 Comments

What’s acceptable syntax in Unix and Linux sh scripts?

December 6, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Linux Help, Linux Shell Script Programming / 2 Comments

Dave, I ran across your sites and Wicked Cool Shell Scripts book while trying to convince myself that `sleep 0` is a valid and relatively portable command to use freely in my unix shell scripts.

I looked at a few of the Bourne shell scripts and they seem to use constructs like $( … ) and $(( … )) which are not standard Bourne shell (to my understanding). So I actually have three questions, rather than just one:

  1. In what flavor of /bin/sh are those scripts written?
  2. Can you suggest any references regarding writing portable (Bourne) shell scripts?
  3. I would love to find an equivalent reference for what unix utilities *and options* to use for increasing script portability. Any suggestions?

Why does so much of my spam have spelling errors?

December 5, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 6 Comments

Dave, I don’t get it. Why do spammers have such a hard time spelling things properly? I get mail trying to sell me “viagggra”, increase my “brest” size, or save me money accessing “pr0n” sites or buying “seks toys”. Even more puzzling, there are plenty of spam messages where it takes me a few minutes to even figure out what the subject actually is, with subjects like “sa vem oneyo n vviiiaaagra” or similar. What’s the story? Why can’t these people use a spell checking program??

How do I install Lexar’s JumpDrive Secure on my Mac?

December 3, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Mac & MacOS Help / 2 Comments

I recently bought a very nice device, a 512MB Lexar JumpDrive Secure USB flash drive. Only barely bigger than a pack of gum, it not only lets me carry lots of data in my pocket, it also includes software from Lexar that makes it a breeze to partition the disk to have an encrypted disk that’s portable between Mac and Windows. Except I couldn’t get the application to install on one of my Mac OS X systems, my PowerBook.

On a mailing list I’m on, a member recently asked: “Due to an abusive web crawler, I now have a 230MB Apache access_log file on my Web server. I tried to trim it down using grep, but I don’t have enough disk space for the command to succeed. Help!”

What one feature of Apple’s Safari browser do you prefer over Firefox?

December 2, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Mac & MacOS Help / 17 Comments

Dave, I’ve been trying to decide between Safari and Firefox as my default browser on my Mac OS X system, and was wondering which you use and why. In particular, since I’m a blogger like you, I spend a lot of my time entering text in those cheesy little forms, and I really like auto-complete on forms. But both browsers have that capability. So which is your default?

Can I offer bonuses on my eBay auctions?

December 2, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Amazon, eBay, and Online Shopping Help, / No Comments

Dave, I’ve just started selling stuff on eBay and am having a great time. One question I haven’t figured out, though, is whether it’s okay with eBay if I want to offer bonuses with my auctions to motivate buyers to bid. I might offer a bonus with an item because the two go together well, but I also want to be able to offer a bonus if bidding reaches a certain threshold too. Are those legal?

Does it really matter where someone went to college?

December 1, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Business Advice / 1 Comment

Dave, as a hiring manager at a large almost Fortune 1000 company, I constantly find myself looking at resumes and trying to weigh the relative value of degrees from different colleges. Does someone with a computer science degree from MIT or an MBA from Stanford but less relevant experience beat someone with a similar degree from Unknown U., and multiple years of directly applicable work? What do you think?
