Can I selectively remove Safari favicon icons?

December 22, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Linux Shell Script Programming, Mac & MacOS Help / 19 Comments

I’ve been slowly adding all the nifty features to my new Web site and am going a bit crazy with Safari. I changed my favicon.ico favorites icon for my Web site, but Safari insists that it’s not right, though when I view the site in Firefox, Camino or any other browser it’s fine. How do I get Safari to be happy?

Can you explain exactly how umask works in Unix and Linux?

December 21, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Linux Help / 7 Comments

Dave, I know you can’t solve trivial questions for everyone, but if you could have someone help me with the umask command and the content on pp. 107-109 of your book Teach Yourself Unix is 24 Hours, I’d appreciate it. I’ve taken two hours to try to figure out how in the world umask 277 produces a read-only file. It seems to me it would be write only. Can you shed some light on this, please?

Can I crack a password protected Microsoft Word file?

December 21, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Mac & MacOS Help / 299 Comments

Dave, I just got another read-only password-protected Word file from my boss and I’m hoping there’s a way to sidestep the password because he gets really mad every time I ask him to unlock the file and/or send me an unprotected version. I dunno if this is legal, though. Can you even answer this for me?

Alright, this is pretty geeky, but is there a way I can grab all my Mac OS X Safari bookmarks using a shell script so I can manipulate the data? I’ve peeked into the bookmarks file and yow, it’s one hairy data file!

How can I tell if my Paypal and eBay Alerts are legit or phishing?

December 19, 2004 / Dave Taylor / PayPal Help, Spam, Scams & Security, Windows PC Help / 4 Comments

Dave, I’m getting more and more confused. I keep getting warnings and alerts from Paypal, eBay, my bank, and various other banks and financial institutions that I don’t even have accounts with, all telling me to log in and verify my account information. I’ve read about something called “phishing” and am wondering if that’s what these messages actually are?

How do I keep my Safari bookmarks in sync?

December 18, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Linux Help, Mac & MacOS Help / 2 Comments

Dave, I have a number of different computers running Mac OS X, and would like to keep my Safari bookmarks in sync. I don’t necessarily need to to have these bookmarks accessible within other Web browsers (though it’d be a bonus if Firefox saw them too) but if I designate one as my master bookmark file, is there any way to have my other Safari browsers stay synchronized?

What are eBay’s Refer a Friend and Anything Points programs?

December 18, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Amazon, eBay, and Online Shopping Help, / 1 Comment

Dave, I’ve just joined eBay and I’m trying to figure out what eBay’s Refer a Friend program is all about. More specifically, I can apparently earn eBay Anything Points but I just don’t see what they’re for. Is this really a way for me to make a few bucks helping other people learn about eBay?
