How do I get the Network Update feature on my Sony PSP to work? I’ve tried what Sony suggests but it never seems to like my wireless Wi-Fi connection, so I can’t ever get to the network to look for any sort of update!
Since I first got my Sony PSP I’ve also been trying to get this to work, with zero success. While it appears to support wireless encryption protocol (WEP), the encryption key that works fine for my Mac and PC fails on the PSP with cryptic errors like 80410D09 and 80410D07.
Then in exasperation I went to a public wifi access point at a local cafe and tried to connect using their wireless network, one that didn’t have any sort of password. And it worked, first time!
The first problem I had to figure out, however, was when I tried to connect I was promptly informed that WLAN Switch Is Turned Off on the PSP screen. After some digging, I found out that the small silver slide switch on the lower left edge controls whether the PSP can access a wireless network (WLAN) or not: slide it up and you’ll be wireless ready.
To configure a network access point, press Home then move to Network Update, then you get to the configuration screen that asks for the WLAN Settings (the default is to enter an SSID), choose “Scan” instead and let the PSP identify all the wireless networks it can see. Choose whichever one has the strongest signal and indicates “None” (not “WEP”) for “Encryption”.
Choose all the default configuration settings and you should promptly be asked to press the X button to save your new access profile. Do so, then select it again and, if your connection works you’ll see “Checking Server…”, then, if there’s an update available, the PSP shows:
To download, insert a Memory Stick with at least 14MB of free space
and press the X button.
Press the X button and you’ll see “Downloading…” and a warning not to turn the unit off or remove the Memory Stick while downloading, then the download starts. I timed it on my system: it took a bit more than ten minutes for the download,PSP operating system version 1.52.
When the download succeeds, you’ll now see:
The update is now available on your
Memory Stick.
To install now, press the x button.
To install later, go to [Game].
Pressing the X button restarts the PSP unit then automatically starts the PSP Update ver 1.52 and gives you a single option: Start. To start the actual upgrade, I again push the X button.
Then, to my surprise, even though the unit is actually plugged into the wall, I receive:
The battery level is low.
Charge the battery and then try again.
I let the unit charge for an hour, then found the update by going to Game, Memory Stick and pressing the X button. This revealed “PSP Update ver. 1.52” which I started with one more press of the X button.
This time it decided that my battery was sufficiently charged (and, yes, it was still plugged in too) and I got:
• Revisions to strengthen security were added.
• UMB MUSIC can now be played under [Music]
Since I don’t have any UMD music, I can only assume that this is so Sony can sell UMD’s as an alternative to music CDs. Would anyone buy them? I am doubtful, but that’s another story entirely…
I pressed the right arrow button, as instructed, and was shown:
the AC adaptor or remove the
Memory Stick during update, as doing
so may cause the system to malfunction.
Once the update is started you cannot
go back to the previous version of the
system software.
Press the X button to start.
Now it switches to “Installing…” and took approximately 90 seconds to install.
Finally, finally, we’re ready to restart the PSP: “Update completed. Press the X button to restart.”
And so, I press X and the unit restarts and appears to be fully functional and everything’s intact with the new, updated, system software. Congrats to Sony for this process – once you figure it out, it’s a simple and elegant way to keep the software on your PSP fully up-to-date.
One final tip: to delete the unneeded update, go to Game, Memory Stick and press X to get to the PSP Update, then press the triangle button to pull up three options for this file: Start, Delete and Information. Move down to Delete and press the X button. Done!
How come my psp dosnt show network setting and what do i do to get network setting
There’s a slider switch on the unit. Check to ensure that you’ve enabled Wi-Fi!

We are able to get the PSP to test OK for accessing the internet, with showing 100% signal strength. However, when we try to access the internet, it either times out before getting IP address or gives us error DNS 80410416. I thank you in advance for you help.

Mna, you know after 15 seconds of “Obtaining IP Address” it will time out. Try selecting “Easy”, not “Custom”. The “Easy” feature may help in some cases.
i did everything you said and it still not working it keep saying obtaing the ip adress timed out what should i do
I FOUND THE 80108D50 ERROR CODE! BUY A PSP GOCAM, PLUG INTO YOUR USB PULGIN, SELECT PHOTO-CAMERA FROM YOUR PSP MENU!
Remember, if your green light (that means on) is flashing, it means your PSP has low battery (20%-)
Jackson, you can’t clean UMD’s, so you’re going to need someone that can fix your UMD. Try Tech Experts (09 2986161)
