My Windows PC never sees Sony PSP USB connection?

May 7, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 159 Comments

Dave, help! My Windows PC does not recognize my new Sony PSP when I plug in the USB cable. Ungood. How do I get the computer to recognize the Sony PSP with the USB cable?

I haven’t got one of these Sony units (though at this point I’d think Sony marketing would be sending me a box of ’em as a thank you for all this free tech support!) but, for the USB problem:
Before you plug it in,
Make sure the PSP is in USB connect mode.
Also make sure the Memory Stick PRO Duo has been formatted for PSP. If it’s not this is how you do it:
On the main menu, scroll all the way left to the “Settings” menu. Then select “System Settings.” Then scroll to “Format Memory Stick” and press X.
This is the PSP forum at Gametrailers — http://forums.gametrailers.com/ — which might help.
Also the PSP forum at GameSpot — http://forums.gamespot.com/ — should keep you busy!

Thanks to Ed Ellis for his research.

Update: ten months later I can see that this answer isn’t actually very helpful. If you’re experiencing a connection problem, you probably don’t need to reformat your Memory Stick but learn how to work with your USB cable. Please see my article I Can’t Get Music to Play on my Sony PSP for much better advice. 🙂
Also, a reader reports that he’s had good success with a digital camera driver on his Windows 98 system and that by using it, he can indeed work with his Sony PSP again. Cool. I haven’t tried it myself, but here’s the link: PSP Win98 driver.

can’t recognise when a USB cable is connected. I’ve plugged in the cable and PC but when I select the USB mode option, it comes up with the message CONNECT A USB CABLE, evn though the cable is clearly connected,

VUSE not recognizing the PSP ?
    here the solution:
Step 1 : Plug in your PSP, when it pops up with the auto run press “View files and folders” or some thing to that effect to bring up the files in your Explorer
Step 2 : Create a new folder named “Video”
Step 3 : Restart Vuze. Your PSP should now be viewable in Vuze under devices as long as Devices is “ON”
*Dont forget to install the vuse transcoder plugin

Aaarghh… My PSP Go:s USB-cabel isn’t working. Can I use other side of that to my computer?? There’s a link under this. Because when I connect my PSP Go to my computer and then go to usb connection, that says: Connect this system to PC or PS3 system using a usb cable. And i have tried everything! Plz answer quickly because other wise i have to buy usb-cable!
