I like to interact with people who leave comments on my YouTube videos but for some reason can’t do so on my computer. Can I comment on videos – specifically reply to comments on my own video channel – from my iPhone?
While it’s not true that everything you can do from a computer Web browser is also accessible from the YouTube app, for basic functionality, the YouTube app for either the iPhone or Android platform is terrific. It certainly makes keeping up with videos from your favorite YouTubers a breeze. It also is channel aware so if you’re logged in to your YouTube / Google account within the app, it’ll know which videos you’ve posted and absolutely let you respond to people right on your smartphone.
If you aren’t logged in, of course, logging in to the YouTube app is a necessary first step. Heck, maybe it’s step #0. In any case, once you’re ready to go, launch the YouTube app and you’ll see the main screen that will have some featured videos and other things to distract you from the task. Kinda like this:
What you want to pay attention to, however, is the set of links along the bottom. Specifically, tap on the “Activity” bell icon, the fourth from the left.
That’ll take you to the point in the YouTube app where you can see what’s going on for your channel, along with what videos people have shared with you, etc:
Notice the “SHARED” and “NOTIFICATIONS” near the top: It’s notifications that you want so you can see what’s happening with the videos on your own channel. I have a variety of comments on my videos, ranging from a spammy commercial post (#2) to questions from viewers that I want to answer.
To see a comment and respond to it, simply tap on the comment. The app will switch you to that specific video so you can refresh your memory about it as needed, and show the comments immediately below:
In this instance, it’s an iced coffee system and a video I recorded in my own kitchen. Note: It’s not usually that clean 🙂
You can see the comment that showed up in the notifications, though, from “Allen Miller”. There are five buttons immediately below it. Left to right, it’s thumbs up, thumbs down, add a comment [which is what we want], like the comment and the three vertical dots which open up a menu that lets you mark a comment as spam, delete it, block that user from commenting on your videos, etc.
Tap on the tiny box with the three even tinier horizontal white lines. Now you can add a response of your own, as shown:
My comment is already entered here, about “The paper filters are…” Easy enough and since the mobile YouTube app supports dictation you don’t even have to tap out the message if you want to be more efficient!
Looks good? No typos? Tap on the blue paper airplane icon to the right of the message input area and…
Comment posted. Whoo! And that’s how ya do it. Pretty darn easy, actually.
