I often go to sleep with music playing on my iPhone, but I don’t want it running all night. I’ve looked at all the iPhone settings and can’t find one that is a timer to turn the music off after an hour. Is that doable in iOS8?
You would think that a sleep timer would be an easy addition to the Music app on the Apple iPhone, but it’s not an option. Don’t give up, however, because it turns out that there is a way to have a sleep timer on audio, whether you’re listening to music or an audio book, and whether you’re on an iPad or iPhone.
Through the Clock app. Of all things. Yes, the Clock has a timer feature, and in that timer feature there’s a way to set it to stop playing audio content when it runs out rather than just having the timer beep or emit an alarm sound.
Let me show you on my own iPhone…
You can actually do this whether you have music playing yet or not, btw, so it’s quite possible to set the timer, then start up your audio book or favorite relaxation CD.
But start with the Clock app:
Once you’re in Clock, tap on “Timer” along the bottom.
Then you can easily set a timer for the duration you want:
The important step here is to tap on the “When Timer Ends” option.
You’ll find that there are a zillion options, but swipe down to the very bottom…
That’s the trick. Tap on “Stop Playing” and you’ve now set a timer to turn off your audio player after a specific time.
Pretty slick, eh?
