This smart home speaker is a great addition to any household
0:03
Let's check it out. Dave Taylor here, and I want to talk about smart homes
0:13
because one of the best features is getting a bunch of speakers
0:17
putting them throughout all your rooms, and synchronizing them all. So you can have music playing throughout your house
0:24
It is just the nice thing, and I'm just endlessly playing music
0:28
I have a lot of hours a year on my Spotify. So, I want to talk about this
0:34
This is the Google Nest Mini second generation Bluetooth smart speaker. And this is in coral
0:42
It comes in four different colors. This is actually my favorite color
0:46
One of the really nice things about this little speaker that has much improved sound and microphone pickup over the first gen
0:52
is that it actually has a little hook space in the back. So it's really easy if you want to wall mount it
0:58
But of course, it can easily sit on a table, on a nightstand, on a chest of drawers
1:04
It's really easy to put it really almost anywhere. And you are ready to rock and roll
1:09
Now, it looks like it has no controls, but there's actually a set of controls on the front
1:15
There's also, on the back, there is the spot for power. And there is also a physical mute switch
1:22
Because remember, this has a microphone in addition to having the speaker capability
1:27
so it's a full interactive device for Google Home. So what we're going to do is I'm going to actually
1:33
I think that turns the microphone on. We're going to plug it in. I have not paired it yet
1:38
So we're going to go through that process too. But I'll tell you this is just a really slick little gizmo
1:46
So let's go ahead and I'm going to plug it in. And then while this thing's warming up
1:51
and I will note that it is a two-prong and it has its own specific power plugs
1:57
so you can't get away with micro USB or USBC. Maybe third gen will be USBC for this
2:04
It is that very specific power. And so let me get my app rolling
2:09
You need to use the Google Home app on your phone. So let's get that up
2:15
And then you can see, I have a couple of different devices
2:20
We're going to add this. For reasons I cannot fully understand or explain I have the Japanese version of the Google Nest Mini Now it doesn actually matter
2:36
This could come up in Klingon, and it would be perfectly fine, because what it's saying is, welcome to the Google Nest Mini
2:44
download Google Home, and start it to go and proceed. So that's what we're going to do
2:49
So now I have Google Home running on my iPhone. I'm going to tap on ad, and then I have Google Home running on my iPhone
2:53
and then I have to choose, is this matter enabled? Is it Google Nest or is it works with Google Home
3:00
And this is Google Nest. So I'm going to have it in my house and let's see
3:07
We're going to look for devices. And this should take probably about 20 or 30 seconds
3:12
And while that's happening, can you see there are four LEDs on the top that are illuminated
3:17
So that's how it actually essentially communicates with you is through those LEDs
3:22
but there's a button underneath the center LED and there are buttons on either side
3:28
Ah, Nest Mini found. That looks good. Let's choose next. Connecting to Nest Mini. And this will actually
3:35
switch the language right at this point. So the next thing we'll hear from the device
3:40
will be in English, which is certainly better for me. Yes, we hear that sound. I agree to the
3:46
legal terms. I don't want to share my data. It's going to end up in my bedroom. I'm going through
3:52
pretty quick connect to Wi-Fi and let's see it can use that network that's fine and so now it's
4:01
like halfway done with the configuration already i mean honestly pretty darn easy so it's connecting to
4:07
Wi-Fi and then it might have to check to see if there's an firmware update or it might be up-to-date we'll
4:13
find out as part of this process let's see it looks like this might be done set up Google assistant sure we
4:22
can do that. That is sort of the entire point of it, so I can say, hey Google, and it'll be like, what
4:28
So, let's see, I don't want to set a voice match, though voice match is pretty cool
4:35
Oh, it's still chatting with me in Japanese. We'll see how that goes. So let's see you. Personal results, no
4:44
Next, we'll skip that and stay in the no. I don't want to be on Google's mailing list
4:52
Almost done Here what we set up That looks good Next So play and pause is in the center Change volume is on the edges and the microphone switch is in the back
5:06
So it looks like the speaker's ready. I'm your Google Assistant. I'm here to help. To learn a few things you can do, continue in the Google Home app
5:14
So notice what I've done here, let me show you this here, is that I'm increasing the volume by just tapping that edge
5:22
Hey, Google, what time is it? 9.39 a.m. That's maybe a bit loud. Let's volume down a little bit
5:32
Hey, Google, what's the weather? Right now in Boulder, it's 73 degrees and sunny
5:38
Today, it'll be mostly sunny with a forecasted high of 87 and a low of 58
5:44
Got it. Thank you for that. We have to try, hey, Google, tell me a joke
5:50
What does a nosy pepper do? It gets jalapeno business. No. It's really good at a lot of things. It's still not very good at jokes. But let's talk more about it. So now that you've seen that interface with the LEDs and everything, very slick, and it did finally switch to English, which I appreciate. The fabric is actually made from recycled plastic bottles, which I think's really cool. And dimensions-wise, it's four inches by four inches by two inches thick. And I haven't unconnected the cable, but it's about a
6:24
two meter power cable and you'll need to have it reasonably close to a power source
6:29
because it needs to be plugged in all the time. There's no battery. The box includes some
6:35
documentation and as I said since I have the Japanese version of it I have all
6:41
Japanese writing on the side and everything but wherever it came from it is in fact a
6:47
great addition to my home network and so now I can do things like and I won't be
6:51
able to do this for very long say things like hey Google play Spotify sure here's Spotify and there we go hey Google stop so can't play it for long
7:08
because I don't have the rights to that music but you know it sounds actually pretty nice
7:14
there's not a huge amount of sound it's really not intended to replace a larger speaker
7:20
but as just a sort of point of music that you can have tuck behind the baby changing table And this is great for something like a nursery because you could easily be setting up a couple of lights And then you could say things like put light
7:36
volume or put light intensity at 20% or turn off light or start playing music
7:42
lullaby, things like that. Really easy to work with. So lots to like here. It's a
7:48
really simple, straightforward device. But there's really a lot that I think makes this a
7:52
great addition in multiple rooms to your Google Home setup. So definitely one to check out and it comes in four colors
8:01
Chalk, which is sort of an off white, charcoal black, coral, which is this color, and sky, which if you live in Seattle
8:11
you'd be confused because it's blue. It's a light blue, okay, so you get sunshine occasionally in Seattle
8:17
But that's really everything. It's pretty simple. You saw it was straightforward to set up
8:22
and get going with your phone and pairing it and everything. And hopefully you get the version that starts out in English
8:28
but it doesn't really matter because all you have to do is turn it on
8:32
and then wait for it to say something and then everything else you do in the app
8:37
So definitely one to check out. Now, we do need to talk about the price
8:41
Before we get there, I'm going to ask you to subscribe to my channel. A click or a tap on that subscribe button, and we're connected
8:49
Go ahead and hit that bell icon for notifications. Give me a thumbs up if you found this of value. Excellent
8:55
Now, this is the Google Nest Mini second-gen Bluetooth smart speaker, and as I said, it comes in four different colors
9:04
Base price is $49, but you can pick it up for 4677 at walmart.com
9:11
or you can just use my YouTube affiliate link. Now, I do need to tell you that YouTube may compensate me for using the shopping tags in this video
9:20
if you buy something. So whether or not you're interested in picking one up or not
9:25
then I will tell you if you're a Google Home officiado, this is a great addition to your home network
9:31
It's definitely one I'm interested in having deployed into my bedroom, as I've already configured
9:36
So I'm going to get that all set up, which means I hope to catch you in my next video
