A budget 4K action cam? Let's check this out
0:11
Dave Taylor here checking out this. This is the Akaso Brave 6 Pro action camera
0:17
Well, it's in its waterproof casing, so let's pop that open. And yes, it is fully waterproof, but here's the actual action cam
0:26
As you can see, it's pretty tiny. It's 2.5 by 1 inch by 1.75 inches
0:32
This is so small, honestly, you could probably wear it as a necklace
0:36
Not sure it was designed for that, but you could. So, features a 20 megapixel sensor, and you can capture video 4K at 30 frames per second
0:45
or if you want 60 frames per second, then you're at 1080p, which is still pretty sweet
0:50
Does time lapse, slow motion, you have to bring your own micro SD card
0:55
I'm using a U1 and it works fine, but the company recommends you use a U3
1:00
which is 30 megabits a second transfer speed. So, when you get this, get yourself a micro SD card and get a nice fast one to make sure that it works well
1:10
It is Wi-Fi controllable, which is particularly important when it's in its waterproof housing
1:15
because you want to be able to control it, though they have some other options for that too
1:19
And it comes with two, let me open the side up here, so you can get a sense
1:24
It comes with two of these little 1050 milliamp hour batteries. So, you put it in, you close the side, ready to go
1:34
Here's the second one, and here's its charging stand. So, super easy, you put them in, has a USB plug, or USB-C, I should say, and it includes USB-C
1:47
And then, let's get into all the stuff it comes with, and then I'll show you some demo footage
1:52
So, it comes with this little simple remote control, and basically it's camera, take a picture, or video, start, stop
2:01
That's all it is, super easy, and this is obviously something you can like strap to your arm
2:06
if you're biking and you want to be able to turn it on or off, easy
2:11
And then there's three bags, and honestly, I don't know how all of this stuff fit in the box
2:15
because I'll never be able to get it back in the box. So, first off, waterproof housing with a pretty standard sort of base mount here
2:25
and that base mount connects to a variety of different gear that also is included
2:31
So, let's see what else we have. We have this like tripod stand for it
2:36
We have, you know what, there are literally so many pieces that what we're going to do
2:41
we're going to dump them all out. There's a lot of stuff this comes with, right
2:45
So, all these different mounts for all these different situations that you can put it on your helmet
2:52
you can strap it to your forehead, you can clip it to something
2:58
I actually used duct tape and taped it to the very front of my car
3:02
I'll show you that footage in a minute, but that's not all it comes with, because it also comes with a Velcro strap in bag number two
3:11
and in bag number three, we have the charging cable, and how about this
3:17
We have a spare back for the waterproof case. So, if this one gets scratched up, they've got a replacement
3:24
How cool is that? And various little zip ties and stuff. I'm not sure why those are in here, but basically, it comes with an insane amount of stuff
3:34
and you'll spend a few minutes just studying how all these things work
3:38
I mean, look at this. But, really, whatever, right? What's it look like
3:44
So, I tried to figure out what could I use this for that would be fun
3:48
So, I did a video that was actually of a lawnmower, and for that, I actually taped this action cam to the front of the mower, right
3:58
So, if you go check out that review, you'll see the action shot right from the front
4:02
and that was with some excitement, because if it would have fallen off or come off the tape
4:07
it would have fallen down, and the mower would have chomped it
4:11
So, I figured that's good action, right? Let me tell you also that it has image stabilization, a 6x zoom
4:19
though controlling the zoom, I guess you do that with your phone, but generally speaking, once you have this thing on, you're just recording and going, right
4:27
But it does have that 6x zoom. It has multiple levels of fisheye or equivalent, and I can see it still has plastic on the lens
4:36
So, here's the thing to think about is when I show you this sample footage
4:41
that was done with plastic on the lens. That's how good this camera is
4:45
It's still pretty darn crisp. So, I thought about it, and I said, hmm, what are my examples going to be
4:51
So, I decided on two. The first one is I actually taped this to the top of my robot vacuum
4:59
and I thought, let's just let it see the vacuum eye view
5:03
and then we'll see what that looks like super sped up. So, here's my house being vacuumed at super fast speed
5:24
Honestly, it would be a little frightening if the vacuum worked that fast, but on the other hand, it would clean my entire house in like 45 seconds
5:30
so that would be pretty sweet. And then I thought, all right, all right, what else can I use this for
5:35
And I decided I would tape this to the front of my car and drive down a little country lane
5:40
So, here's that footage, again, sped way up to make it much more interesting
5:53
In both cases, notice how the image stabilization took out a lot of the bumping and jarring
6:15
I mean, it's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good, and the footage itself is really clean
6:20
But, here's the thing, there's some quirks about this camera too. First of which is there's no microphone input, which if you think about it, makes sense
6:29
because if you were to put it in a waterproof housing, how do you get a microphone to it, right
6:33
So, in fact, when you have it in here, it doesn't really capture any sound at all
6:38
which again, that makes sense, because how is it going to hear, I use the hear loosely
6:44
how is it going to hear if it's in this waterproof case? But, if you want to use this for a variety of different purposes
6:50
it would have been nice if they would have some sort of method where you could use an external mic
6:55
You can't. Now, it also works with an app that you could have on your iPhone or your Android
7:01
and that's pretty tricky. So, you know, I can show you a little bit of how that works with these few screenshots and stuff
7:09
but the reality is that I found that the Wi-Fi connection between the camera and my phone was very flaky
7:16
and it was common for me to press record and to be monitoring what it's recording
7:21
and suddenly it'll say disconnected, at which point I then didn't know
7:25
is it still recording, or did that disconnect automatically stop the recording
7:30
So, you know, that's something where maybe they can work on getting a better Wi-Fi chip in this
7:36
but generally speaking, I think that, you know, those apps aren't super critical
7:42
The other benefit from the Action Cam experience I've had is that you have these buttons here
7:47
so I can just go and start recording, and now I can have fun with this and go swimming or whatever
7:54
and, you know, whether or not that's working with my phone, whatever. I'm just focused on actually the fact that the unit itself is working
8:01
and I will say that, and let me open it up again so you can see the buttons
8:06
is it does have some fairly rudimentary controls on the device itself
8:11
The power button is on the front, and then there's three buttons on the top
8:16
and the most important is the right hand is start, stop video, or take a photo
8:21
and then the back is actually a touch screen, and you can see in this close-up
8:25
there's a lot of different settings and stuff you can adjust, so there's a lot you can get to when it's not in the housing, obviously
8:32
So, you can use the Wi-Fi, and you can use the app on your phone
8:36
My experience is that it's much more easy and much less likely to cause you to be stressed
8:41
if you just work directly on the camera itself, so your mileage may vary
8:45
Nonetheless, for the price, this is super fun. I really enjoy playing with these sort of cameras, and I really like trying to figure out
8:53
what weird and interesting things can I take pictures of that will be engaging
8:58
so hopefully I accomplish that with this review, and all in all
9:02
solid option, and way less expensive than all those GoPros, right? Obviously, same sort of camera, same sort of category
9:11
It comes with literally everything you could possibly ever want in terms of mounting and everything
9:17
so really lots of fun. Two batteries, you can buy more batteries, you can buy a bigger charger
9:22
all those sort of options, and you know, you will want your own microSD
9:27
so you want to get one that's nice and fast, and let's talk about the price
9:31
but before we get to the price, two things. Number one, this is their third or fourth generation Action Cam from Akaso
9:38
and you should definitely go and look on Amazon and read people's reviews
9:42
People adore this thing. People that are doing mountain biking and kayaking and surfing
9:48
and all sorts of crazy action sports are just finding this a great option
9:53
and if they lose it, they just buy another one because it's actually that inexpensive
9:57
So, you kind of wonder, at the bottom of the ocean, are there hundreds or thousands of these Action Cams
10:02
that are swept into a corner? It'd be a nice thing to find, wouldn't it
10:06
Anyway, so, there's that. Number two, please go ahead and subscribe to my channel
10:11
I really appreciate when you do that, and it lets us stay connected. Now, this, all of this, really, is the Akaso Brave 6 Pro Action Camera
10:21
and it is $84.99 at Amazon.com. $84.99. That is a pretty nice entry point for something that your skateboarding daughter or your action bike son
10:34
or you, with all of your action sports, with skiing and surfing and snowboarding and everything
10:40
this is super fun, definitely worth checking out. So, with that, I'm going to go back to some more action footage
10:47
which means I'll catch you in my next video
