Test your vision with this device in your smartphone? Let's check it out
0:11
Dave Taylor here and I'm looking at something ridiculously cool. This is the IQ Vision Check
0:17
and this little Bluetooth device coupled with an app on your smartphone lets you test your vision
0:24
at home with no schedules, no doctors visits, no waiting until your appointment and considerably
0:31
less expensive too. Super cool. Now, one warning is that this works best if you're 27 or older
0:38
so using this with your kids isn't going to give you great results. There's a lot of reasons for
0:43
that, but suffice to say, if you're an adult, this is going to work great. If you're not
0:48
then this probably isn't going to be a solution for you. But what this is, is this is an automated
0:53
refraction test and what it does is basically it gives you a green and a red line in your
0:59
line of vision and then you adjust things to get them to perfectly overlap and then it's
1:04
solid yellow. It does that for nine different measurements on each of your eyes. You do that
1:10
three times and then it gives you an eyeglass number which is sufficient for you to be able
1:15
to order glasses or contacts. How cool is that? It also gives you what's known as near vision
1:22
ADD or an NVADD+, and that's a number that will actually let you go and buy readers or progressive
1:30
glasses straight off the shelf, right? So you can get them from the local drugstore or something
1:34
All of that from this little tiny device. It's amazing, really. It identifies nearsightedness
1:40
farsightedness, and it works with astigmatism, though if your eyesight is pretty far off the
1:46
measure, then this might not be that good enough for those real extreme situations. That would be
1:52
something you might double check with the company, but super cool. So it is a Bluetooth device. It
1:58
pairs with your phone. That process is super easy and it has three buttons on the top and the first
2:04
two buttons closest to the eyepiece move the two lines. So when you're looking at the two lines
2:10
the first button will move them closer. The second button will move them further away
2:14
because if you go too far, then moving them further away will get them perfectly lined up
2:19
and you basically just do that for each of nine different angles and then it can figure out what's
2:25
going on. So amazing. So those are those. Then the front most button basically is the I accept this
2:31
go to the next one. So that's a progress button. And then on the side, there's power and then
2:37
there's charging and it's a USB charger. So let me open the box and show you what else is inside
2:43
There is a strap because you strap this around your phone to make sure it stays in the right
2:49
place. A USB-C charger, very handy. And I like that it's USB-C. A product manual, a lint-free
2:58
cloth, and the other super cool thing is a PD check glasses. And what these are is these are
3:05
a special pair of glasses frames that if you look, you'll see that they have a T symbol in three
3:16
places. And basically you put them on and I know they make me look very fashionable and take a
3:22
selfie in the app. And then within the app, you then adjust its crosshairs to match these three
3:29
positions. It identifies where your pupils are and it gives you what's known as a pupillary distance
3:34
measurement. Amazing, really, right? And that's just with this and your camera on your phone. I mean
3:43
why are opticians so expensive and so complicated, right? So with all of that, oops, actually let's
3:48
keep this out because we're going to run a test. But let me just tell you just a tiny bit more
3:54
The output of this, like I said, is an eyeglass number. This is not a prescription. This is not
4:01
actually replacing an optician. This is just a way to do vision tests and get glasses and stuff
4:07
super easy from home. But it does give you that near vision numbers and everything. So, you know
4:15
it's definitely pretty dang cool. And so the pricing is a little funky. I'm not a super big
4:23
fan of that because this has a base price. And then for more than one user, you have to pay an
4:29
additional subscription fee. Now it's only $4.99 per person. So if you have a family like me
4:36
where it's me and three kids, then that's still only three times $4.99 additional, which is
4:42
collectively way less, you know, including the cost of all this hardware, it's way less than one
4:48
visit to the optician. So can't complain too much about that. But you should know that they actually
4:54
do that. And I, you know, some people are rather taken aback where this isn't for the family. This
4:59
is for one user. So not a huge crisis. And then you obviously need this. But you also need a
5:06
reasonably modern smartphone. It works with iPhone or Android, but your screen needs to be at least
5:12
250 pixels per inch, which means super low cost Android phones and older iPhones probably don't
5:20
have sufficient screen density. Check their website at iq.com to find out if your phone is supported
5:28
if you're worried. So cool, let's actually go ahead and use this. Now. It's already on. So
5:34
that's good. So I'm going to just launch the app. And let's go back to the beginning. I don't know
5:40
why the app let's see. Okay, I was halfway through a test. I shouldn't have done that. Right. So here
5:53
we are. I've already done the test. So here's the result I have. And it's showing me my spherical
5:59
cylindrical and axis for my left and right eyes. And it's given me a pupillary distance of 70. I
6:06
think it's millimeters. I'm not sure. And that NVADD is plus two. Yes, I wear glasses when I'm
6:13
reading how it goes. But now we know all those numbers. To run a test, you actually just push
6:19
test. And then I'm going to just go ahead and repair the device with my phone. And we're good
6:26
And so now I'm at this point. And now there's a little box. And here's the key idea. Put the
6:32
buttons on the top and then take your time to place this perfectly centered. So there we go
6:40
And then we just use this little band. It's sticky already, as you can see, but we use the band to
6:46
make sure it doesn't move around at all. So that's it. We're ready to roll. I'm going to turn the
6:52
volume on because it's kind of a chatty app and that's OK. So first thing I have to say is have
6:58
I removed my eyeglasses and contacts? Yes. Do I have a screen protector on? Yes. That's actually
7:04
pretty important. The app needs to know that so we can actually modify a couple of things
7:09
And then you can either go directly to an actual test. You have to do three full tests to get your
7:15
results. Or you can do practice. And the practice is really cool because you can stop halfway. You
7:22
can let one of your kids try it if they're wondering what you're doing. Again, this is not
7:27
for anyone under 27 to get really great results. But I know my kids are certainly curious about it
7:33
But if we just do a practice, I'll just do that. And then let's add the volume
7:39
So I'm actually going to step through this because I've done this a bunch of times. But basically
7:46
you're going to do this. Right. And then I'm going to adjust it until I can see both the red and
7:53
green lines. Right. So then on the bottom, there's a yes or no. So I'm going to say yes
8:00
And I'm going to do the same for my left eye. And I'm going to zip past their video tutorial
8:07
So now I'm ready to go. So we're starting with my right eye
8:21
Right. And that's pretty important. Don't close your other eye. Keep it open. And basically
8:27
I do this. Orient my fingers on the three buttons. And then I see the red and green lines
8:35
the red and green lines, approximately what you're seeing in the inset
8:39
And then I'm adjusting with the buttons to get it to line up. Once it looks like it's just
8:46
solid yellow. I then push the third button and. Oh, I have to tap the screen. Then I can do
8:58
So now it is good. Okay. So we're ready to go. So I'm on the next position and then I just do the
9:09
same thing for all the different angles. So I know not super exciting watching me take the test, but
9:18
lots of great positive feedback. So suffice to say, that's all you do. It's actually pretty darn
9:26
easy. You go through the process and you use each of those tests and you just, you know
9:33
line up the red and the green until you have yellow. And then you push the third button
9:38
the one closest to the screen. You go to the next one, you go to the next one. And when you're done
9:44
you can opt to save it. Or you can say, you know, I have allergies today, or I don't feel well
9:50
or it's really dry in the house and my eyes are really dry and I don't feel like I'm getting
9:55
good results. And you can just say, I'm going to discard this and I'll come back later. Or you can
10:00
do what I'm doing, which is just a practice. And I would highly recommend you do at least one
10:05
practice set for both eyes all the way around. So you get the hang of how it works. Really
10:12
the biggest challenge I had was not having my hand in the way of my other eye. So that couldn't focus
10:18
on anything. And that's something where you just sort of get the hang of how to hold it so that
10:23
your other eye has free vision. And that's all there is. You go through the tests, you save
10:29
everything. Once you've done it three times, you get all the results. This is really a remarkable
10:35
piece of technology. Like I said, it's an automated refraction test, and it is very similar to what
10:41
you would have at the ophthalmologist, optician. I'm not sure how they all differentiate, but
10:47
when you go to the eye doc and you want to get a prescription, they use a very similar device
10:53
This is the home version of that. How amazing, really. So really, the only thing left to talk
10:58
about is the price. But before we get to the price of this and I wrap up, let me ask if you
11:04
can subscribe to my channel. Really appreciate it. I get a lot of gear. IQ sent me this so I
11:09
could test it out and try it. Thanks so much. Super interesting. So please subscribe to my
11:15
channel, and I will give you the straight scoop on everything. So totally worthwhile
11:21
Now, this device and everything in the box, the whole package deal, is the IQ VisionCheck system
11:29
and it is $69 at IQ.com. Yes, you heard me. $69. Gets you the whole setup. So now you can see
11:38
if you do have to pay an additional $4.99 for another family member, then it's really not that
11:45
big a deal. Even if you and your spouse and grandma and grandpa and uncle Joe all use this
11:52
device and everyone has to get a subscription except for the first person, that's still less
11:57
than one visit to the eye doc. So really amazing. I am really pretty impressed by this technology
12:03
And not only that, but this is the second generation of this device. So they've already
12:07
gone through a lot of engineering refinement and the whole system with all the video tutorials and
12:13
the audio prompts and everything. I guarantee you'll be able to do it. This is really
12:18
straightforward. Run a couple of tests and practices, and you will be getting some really
12:23
good results, and you'll be testing your vision at home anytime you want. Amazing, really. So I say
12:30
definitely check this out. And with that, I'm going to get back and finish up my test
12:34
which means I need to put it back on my phone. And I'll catch you in my next video
