How do I remove a Facebook friend or connection?

October 29, 2007 / Dave Taylor / Facebook Help / 92 Comments

Not to sound like I’m becoming antisocial, but a woman who’s on my friends list on Facebook turns out to be quite the kind of person I don’t like to associate with. Can’t say more than that, but I need to “defriend” her (unfriend her?) How do I do that??

Uh oh, sounds like trouble in Facebook paradise to me! 🙂
Fortunately, it’s remarkably easy to defriend someone on Facebook, just a few mouse clicks. First off, select “Friends” from the top navigational bar:

Facebook navigation menu bar: Friends

Notice here that within the “Friends” area, I’ve also selected “Friend List”. You’ll want to do that too.
Now scroll around until you find the profile of the person in question. It’ll look approximately like this, though obviously we’re not talking about the same person! 🙂

Facebook Friend Profile

Note the link on the lower right, “Remove Friend”. That’s what you want to select. Click on that and you’ll get a confirmation dialog box:

Facebook Remove Friend

If you’re really sure she should get the proverbial boot, click on “Remove Friend”, otherwise click on “Cancel” and they’ll never know that they were on the very edge of the abyss. 🙂

How do I delete different list that were created for my friends? Example: my daughters friends, a list was created that says “my crazy step-daughters”. How do I go about deleting something like that? There are more list, this is just an example and no, there are no names/friends in these extra list either.
    Thank you,
    Ms Jane

Yes, unfortunately managing friends and friends list is no longer as easy. Here’s the instructions for removing a friend per the Facebook Help Center (located at the bottom right of your facebook page)
If you would like to remove a friend, navigate to the person’s profile and click the “Remove from Friends” link at the bottom of the page. If you select this option, you will be removed from the person’s Friends List as well. You will need to repeat the friend confirmation process if you wish to be friends with this person again.

    Please help,
My own name appears under my friends list and I have no idea how this happened! I don’t know how to delete it either! Could you please help, it’s driving me crazy! I figured out to where it says “are you sure you want to delete Christine?” When I press remove, it does disappear, but when I go back into my friends list again, it’s there again.
    Please help!!!

If someone defriends you do they have to request a friendship again in order to have you back on their list? I just got suddenly defriended by 3 of my daughter’s in-laws and I’m wondering whether they’re suddenly going to reappear on my list without my having to reapprove them.

For all of the people who asked about de-friending someone without them knowing.
Since I’m just not sure if de-friending someone results in a notification, I recommend you merely hide their status updates. It results in the same thing, you don’t see their stuff.
To do so, merely mouse-over someone’s status update. A button on the right side of the first line of their update will appear (hide) and, upon clicking that, you’ll be prompted to confirm that it’s what you want to do.
And the other person has no idea that you’ve hidden their updates.
    Just a thought.

I was friending a few people for my mafia wars application, but now when i try to delete them as a friend i dont have the option. Where the “X” is to delete them it only asks if i want to delete my connection with them. I do that and they still show up in my search box when i start spelling a name similar to theres. Its very annoying, help please?

General consensus on Twitter is that if you unfriend someone on Facebook that they do *not* get any sort of notification. They’ll only notice you’ve done so if they try to look at your private profile, etc.

Can you unfriend a person without them being notified? I don’t dislike these people, but I don’t want my site cluttered with all their communications with others; I want to just keep a tight circle of friends and family. Many of the people who wanted to be “friends” with me have no interest in me anyway. It’s just so distracting every time I go on Facebook.
