I am currently living with my Dad, have about 1700 songs in iTunes and don’t want to lose them when I move to my Mother’s house! How could I somehow transfer the songs to my computer at my Mom’s house? Is there a way where I could burn the data to a CD or something? If you could please let me know, it’d be very appreciated.
Does your Dad’s computer have a DVD burner? If so, you could use one of the slick iTunes export utilities to pull them out of iTunes, then burn them onto DVD.
Hmmm, so how many would DVDs would you need?
Let’s see… 1700 songs at an average song size of 4MB means your 1700 song library takes up 6.8GB. An average DVD disk holds about 4GB so you should be in good shape with two DVDs for the entire music library. Not too bad.
Or, if you can afford it, go buy an external 30GB disk or larger, drag and drop your entire iTunes Library onto the disk, then import it when you get to your Moms house.
Checking CompUSA, they have a nice looking Buslink 60GB external USB 2.0 Drive for $128. Not a bad price!
To look for export utilities, by the way, I encourage you to pop over to VersionTracker and search for ‘itunes’. There are plenty of options available.
Hope that helps you get things worked out!
HELP!!! I had a friend fix my computer. He downloaded my itunes library onto his or a hard drive. Now I went in to sync my brand new ipod and found all 100G erased! Only exclamation points! What do I do now? I have used up all five of my itunes computers so what he did was totally illegal. How can I get my library back? It is still on old ipods, but not mine. Help!!!
My libary includes 400K songs.
Using 3 TB Western Digital HD to store 350+ converted personal movies from my collection. Want to add more movies from my collection but this process is slowing my computer down considerably. Although I have downloaded the movies to my Ext HD, have left my itunes library on my desktop main drive. Is there a way to add more movies without slowing down my computer?
Tks.
Initially I was using itunes on my C drive with all my music data stored on an external drive. C drive crashed. I replaced it and system is running Windows 7 and itunes 9, but itunes does not recognize the data on my external drive.
– I have changed the folder directory under Edit>Preferences, but itunes does not recognize the files or folders. I have a hunch the file system was created with the older folder structure which the current itunes no longer sets up. Likely, in the past, when I updated Apple software, the newer version of itunes accomodated my existing folder structure, but the new version isn’t getting it.
– I have access to all the old data on my crashed C drive. I can restore any library files or pointer files. I just don’t know which they are or how the itunes system works.
Any help would be super appreciated!
There’s an article, which may be interesting for some of you. It’s explaining how to transfer the entire iTunes library manually, or by using DVDs or a software. I managed it using the software, but also the manual part seems to be quite easy. http://en.kioskea.net/faq/10073-transfer-itunes-to-another-computer

Hi there.. recently i bought an iPod Classic and i want to be able to put purchased content i.e Song that i bought on my iPhone to the new ipod but dont have them in my music library hi do i do this???? if you can help i would very much appreciate it. Thank you.
hey, i have an ipod version 4.0, my mate updatd it for me. and my siters still have the older version, and they are using the older iTunes version at the moment, which has there songs on it, and the old iTunes doesnt support my version 4.0 ipod, and i want new songs! i tried putting more songs on my ipod from mates houses, but that just mean that mymusic and games ot restored, and now i have no music. my computer recently got busted, and we are now using the laptop, but i still cant get songs on my ipod because of the old version of itunes! any ways that i could get songs onto my ipod? or even get my ipod back to the ld version?
thanks.
Sarah: Mac or PC?
Graham: I’m not clear. If all this content is on your old iPod, doesn’t that mean that it’s also on your computer so you can sync it? If so, just get the new iPod, plug it in, and check the appropriate boxes to have all the content copied?
I want to buy a larger ipod ( currently have a nano). How do I transfer all my music from my itunes library to my new ipod?
I had Itunes running quite well off an external hard drive on my old computer, but I’m having a heck of a time getting it set up that way on my NEW computer. Every time I think I’ve got it working properly it shifts to running off my computer. Dave, can you (or anyone else!) give me the steps to set up Itunes on a new machine so it runs off an external hard drive that already has my Itunes library set up?
If one of the computers is a laptop, then there’s a much easier way than using a cd or an external hard drive: home sharing. Just have both of the computers in the same household, have them signed on to home sharing, and manually transfer songs in a matter of seconds.
Dave,
When opening iTunes on my new iPad, do you know how do I go directly to my iTunes library rather than my popular or downloaded tunes?
Thanks.
Hameed
Hi Dave,
Like a a lot of the postings here, my hdd crashed. I was running XP at the time. I didn’t loose my music as it was on an external USB HDD. I have two issues:
Being a visual person all of my music was catalogued with proper (and some times rare) album cover clip art and historical data as to track location on original recordings, original date of publishing. performer, writer, etc… so a lot of after the fact research and effort was put into the 108GB of music, video and iTunes University lectures that are on my iPod Classic.
Where I am now:
I have since replaced the hdd in the PC notebook that iTunes was installed on and migrated to Vista 64 (I’ll be moving to Win7x64 pro before september). iTunes has been installed from the apple website.
I also have a MacBook Pro that the university I attend requires us to use. I have iTunes for OSX on that as well as ITunes in the BootCamp partition using Vista Business (also migrating to Win 7 in sept).
the problems:
1. Is there anyway of saving six years of hard work of collecting album art and info from the ipod directly without duplicating the actual music files (etc) on the USB drive? (I have songs on the USB drive that I didn’t and don’t want on my iPod), likewise some lectures. I know iPod copy will transfer a copy of iPod contents into a new iTunes directory but I’d like iTunes to refer to the external drive files so I won’t have to spend the next six years clicking get info to and redirecting iTunes to make my iPod look correct again. (Where is album art and info stored? I’, assuming in a iTunes file in the iTunes directory somewhere).
2: Will exporting the library “de-install” the library on the original iTunes? If I want universality between my pc notebook and my MacBook Pro dual boot? Is this possible? (They all reference the external hdd as some sort of music and video server).
Sorry for my lengthy message but I wanted to provide all the info for the situation.
Thanks for you help Dave!
Robert
Dave, I do appreciate all the help you provide to everyone. This probably is VERY easy for you but not for me. I need to move a purchased song from the “purchased” list to the main itunes library list. My intent is to upload the song to CutMP3 so that I can edit it as a ringtone for my cellphone. When I try to access the itunes list from the CutMP3 website, the purchased song isn’t there. It is only on the “purchased” list which doesn’t show up on the main list of itunes songs. Help!

Hey, My laptop recently totally crashed and not in any way able to work again even with a new hard drive. all my music, photos and videos are stored on my iPod touch, but I want to know how to get them onto a new laptop. They weren’t backed up, and I hadn’t selected manage music manually. I have found a few explanations for songs, but nothing for podcasts, movies and photos. My iPod has the only copies of all these files. Help?! I really don’t want to go through and buy/upload my whole 2000 songs back, not to mention the 300 podcasts, 50 movies and 1500 photos that i don’t have another copy of. Please help me! Thanks for your time

Therese, first off, don’t panic. 🙂 You can use a variety of different tools to move the music off your iPod back onto your computer, as I detail here:
https://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_do_i_get_songs_off_my_ipod.html
You can put that music wherever you want on your computer, and then you can go into the iTunes preferences and tell it where to look for the music. Should be straightforward!
