This is a fun question: “How do I change the icon shown for my hard disk on my Mac? I used to know how to do this with the older MacOS, but not with Mac OS X.”
It turns out that the process of assigning another icon is remarkably similar in Mac OS X, actually!
The basic idea is that you find the icon that you like, then do a “Get Info” on that item. Then, with the Get Info window open, similarly click on the hard disk icon you want to change and select “Get Info” on that.
Now, with both Get Info windows open, click on the icon you like, then use CMD-C (or Edit -> Copy) to copy it to the clipboard, then click on the icon you don’t like and use CMD-V (or Edit -> Paste) to replace it.
That’s it! Close both Get Info windows and you should be in happy Mac icon heaven.
Until the obvious question comes up: where do I find cool icons?
There are actually a pile of free icon repositories, but I always look at two places and figure that if they don’t have what I want, I might not be able to find it without a lot more searching. My two favorites are:
Interface Lift.com – lots of ads on this site, but it’s pretty darn easy to find the set you like because of their nice big previews. That contrasts with the other site…
Icon Factory.com – this site has a much
more extensive set of icons, but it drives me bonkers that I can’t see a
preview of them prior to clicking into each name.
You can also Google +free +icon +”mac os x” with some success.
Finally, there are some popular icon management tools for Mac OS X, including most notably CandyBar, but I don’t use those because I prefer to have most of my icons untouched so that my screenshots aren’t too weird. Your mileage will undoubtedly vary.
I’ve tried everything mentioned here.
The best I can get is that the icon I want is in the preview when I “Get info” on the drive, but the desktop icon, and the one at the top in the GET INFO mode, still show a page with BMP on it.
I got it to working for awhile, but then after i ejected the SSD, and restarted, it reverted back to the BMP icon, even though the Icon I want still shows up in the preview box.
