How do I add photos to my Apple iPod?

February 21, 2006 / Dave Taylor / iPod & MP3 Player Help / 138 Comments

I have a new Apple iPod Video and have been really enjoying its music capabilities, but I’d also like to add some pictures to its photo album from my PC. But I’m darned if I can figure out how the heck to do that! There’s nothing vaguely photo-related in iTunes and I’m stumped. Help!

While the iPod is a great music player, I have to agree that using iTunes to manage photos and video is pretty awkward. I too have struggled with this when trying to figure out how to add photographs to my own Apple iPod 5G (that is, iPod Video), and finally figured it out.
The first step is to hook up the iPod to your Windows PC and start up iTunes. Your iPod will show up on the left side after a few seconds and you’ll want to click on it. It’ll look like this:

Apple's iTunes running on Windows XP

On the lower right there’s a cluster of four buttons: you want to click on the leftmost of them, the iPod Options button. I’ve highlighted it above. When you click on it, you’ll see a set of options. Choose the “Photos” subtab:
Apple's iTunes iPod Options running on Windows XP

You can see how to get the photos onto your iPod from here, I bet. Choose to synchronize with either your My Photos directory or a specific subfolder therein:
Apple's iTunes synchronizing photos with an Apple iPod on Windows XP

Click on “Okay” and a few seconds later iTunes will show you that it’s plugging away adding content to the iPod. Interestingly, it automatically reformats the images to have them look maximally attractive on the iPod as it goes:
Apple's iTunes Optimizing Photos for the Apple iPod, running on Windows XP

That’s how you add photos to your iPod. But how you later delete ones you don’t want? That I have no idea how to accomplish and it’s not mentioned at all in the iPod documentation either, interestingly! Anyone have a clue?

To those who doesn’t have the “4th tab” .. just do this :
1.go to your Itunes library and select the song/s that you want to add some pictures.
    2.right click it.
    3.then click GET INFO.
    4.next the ARTWORK tab.
    5.add.
6.then select the picture you want to add.
    7.then OK.
    –> that’s all . I figured it out myself . :))

The photo management capability (rather the lack thereof) is absolutely HORRIBLE and RETARDED with the iTunes/iPod. I have iTunes installed on two computers; as you would expect, the photos library on those machines are different. How can you transfer both libraries to your iPod? You CAN’T. The absolutely EVIL sync function DELETES whatever photos that are already on the device before it transfers the pictures from the computer the iPod is currently connected to. The only way to have both picture libraries on the iPod is to say “Okay, you win again Apple; I’ll manually “clone” the libraries on both computers.” WOW. THAT IS RIDICULOUSLY RETARDED.

if you only want certain photos you have to create a new file on your computer and put the photos in there and then sync them

Make life easier. Put all your photos in the MASS STORAGE DEVICE then sync everything from itunes.
This way you can ADD or DELETE photos thru the MASS STORAGE DEVICE folder just like any normal folder.
This doubles the memory though, that’s why I got the 160gb ipod. Hey,everything has a catch- the ipod aint perfect.

I just tested CopyTrans Photo with my iPod Touch and it worked just great and it was much easier to use than the iTunes photo sync feature.
There is also a cool option to transfer full resolution photos to the iPod Touch which is not available in iTunes for registered users.
    I can only recommend it.

There’s a much better way than iTunes to add photos to your iPod: CopyTrans Photo.
It allows you to drag photos directly from your computer to your iPod or iPhone with thumbnails.

Alot of people are asking the exact same question over and over again. Read!!
If you don’t see the answer you’re looking for, then reread. It’s in there (turst me, I’ve read twice and frowned at the fact the same question keeps getting asked).
To recap everything that’s been said.
    For Windows Users
    Adding photos
    Step 1: Open Itunes
Step 2: Plug in your Ipod
Step 3: After Itunes sees your Ipod, it’ll display the screen that shows how much space is free, used, has music, etc. on your Ipod. Look across the top row and it should have Summary, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Photos, Contacts, Games (it may not be in that order on your ver of Itunes..but it’s up there.
Step 4: Click on Photos (making sure where its says “Sync photos from:” has a check next to it.
From there you can change where the folder where your photos are. (Can you select multiple folders at once…as fas as I know, no!)
It’ll list all the folders that’s in the main folder you selected. Click apply and if should automatically sync. If not, click the sync button.
    Option 2
Step 1: Find someone you know who has an Ipod and is computer literate or knows how to work technology.
Step 2: Ask nicely if they’ll help you out.
Step 3: Pray they say “yes” (for those that don’t believe in prayer…hope for the best.
Step 4: Be glad that someone helped you.
Not downing anyone, but its not rocket science or brain surgery. Look thru the software, you’re not going to hurt it looking. If you’re still confused or have problems, then seek help, read…and if you don’t find or see the answer, then ask a question.
    Everyone enjoy your Ipod..

BH – please go back to the top and look again at the tutorial. Do you need a Mac version? I can do that…
Kayla, I’ve seen that too. My instinct is that somehow the iPod can’t load all the graphics fast enough for the coverflow. Try going to the end, then slowly going back to the black covers and see if they’re replaced with the proper graphics?

The problem most of you are having is that this picture is outdated.
If you have a more recent iTunes (I believe from 7 on it has a new interface) you need to go to your iPod on the left column then open up the tap titled “photos”. Then from there you can choose to have your iPod sync all the folders/photos in My Pictures.
You can also choose to sync only certain folders in My Pictures, or to sync pictures not in the My Pictures folder.
