I’ve been on Google Plus (or do I write it “Google+”?) for a while now and I like it, but I realize that I mess with my profile settings and photos a lot more on Facebook. To remedy that, can you show me step-by-step how to change my profile photo on Google Plus, please?
Glad you’re finding Google Plus a good addition to your social media world. I use it quite a bit and find it to be a lot less cluttered, a lot less full of what I shall politely call drivel and dreck than my Facebook newsfeed. I mean, really, do I care what people ate for lunch or wore to work or had to drink when they were at the bar with their friends? No, not really much at all.
On the other hand, because it’s more busy, Facebook is also more dynamic and so I’ve long ago figured out how to quickly change my profile photograph to the point where I’ll sometimes change it for just a day or two, tied to an event or holiday. Most recently, I had a photo of me grimacing as my profile pic in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day. Arrrr, good clean fun, matey!
Google Plus actually makes it easier to change your profile photo and gives you a lot more tools to take whatever photo you’ve uploaded or chosen and tweak it to be the perfect level of zoom, color balance, brightness, etc.
Let’s jump in!
First off, look for the tiny thumbnail pic of your profile photo on the top right:
You can see that’s a rather formal pic of me, with a collar shirt and suit jacket on.
Not so much how I look.
To change it, click on the tiny triangle adjacent to the thumbnail:
I’ve moved the cursor over the larger thumbnail of my profile pic and the blue “Change photo” magically appeared.
There are other things you can tweak from this point, including your all-important Privacy settings, but let’s stay focused.
Click on “Change photo” and a drop-window appears:
Drag the photo you want to use as a replacement for your existing profile photo onto the big drop target.
It’ll look like this when you’re dragging:
Let go of the cursor button and the image uploads and you’re presented with a crop box:
Unlike on Facebook, you can really monkey around with the photo at this point. Try dragging the edges of the box to make it larger or smaller, or click dragging the box itself to change exactly what it’s going to crop in the original photo.
I did just that and here’s the change I settled on:
Looks good! Heck, I look pretty rugged and outdoorsy in this photo, don’t I? 🙂
Done, so click on the blue “Set as Profile Photo” button on the lower left and…
Updated everywhere. Easy enough.
And now you know how to quickly change your Google Plus profile photo, so you can do so as frequently as your heart desires.
