I’m a big fan of LinkedIn and use it every day. Recently I learned that you can tie your Twitter account to your LinkedIn account and now I want to do just that. How do I connect LinkedIn and Twitter?
Used to be that you could actually hook up LinkedIn and Twitter so that it worked in both directions: a Twitter message, um, “tweet”, would also show up as a LinkedIn status update, and a LinkedIn status update could also automatically be shared with your Twitter followers as a tweet. Easy. Except…
The twitter posts completely overrun LinkedIn and the entire LinkedIn newsfeed become indistinguishable from a Twitter feed. I can remember checking LinkedIn just to see every single status update was “from Twitter”, at which point I rather decided that there wasn’t any point paying attention to LI any more because I could just watch Twitter and I’d be good.
I think I wasn’t alone, because now, as far as I can tell, the linkage is only one way: LinkedIn to Twitter. And to do that, you need to check the “Share on Twitter” checkbox every time you want to have the same update go to both destinations.
Ironically, of course, the rise of third party apps like HootSuite has created a certain level of havoc in this space because it lets you easily send the same status to LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and any other service you’d like. The great homogenization of social networks, something I do not support. But that, as they say, is another story.
Let’s get back on track with your question…
To start, click on your tiny thumbnail icon on the top right of your LinkedIn page. You’ll see this menu pop up:
Choose “Privacy & Settings” to proceed or, um, “Review”, as they phrase it.
For your safety, LinkedIn will require you to enter your password again:
Once you’ve done that, and you do know your password, right?
Once you’ve confirmed your identity, you’ll see a screen full of options. The top portion looks like this:
You can upgrade if you’d like. I’ve never done so, but perhaps some day…
Meanwhile, what you seek is lower down, actually, in the next block of information, the one that has all the most interesting settings:
Top right, just under Settings: “Manage your Twitter settings”.
Before we go further, however, I would definitely encourage you to spend a minute or two looking at all the many things you can tweak and fine-tune to ensure that LinkedIn is working as you expect, particularly from a privacy perspective.
Ready to proceed? Great. Click on “Manage your Twitter settings”.
Ah, look. I’m wrong. Apparently you can still display Twitter updates on your LinkedIn profile. Interesting, because I haven’t noticed any of them on my LI newsfeed for quite a while.
Maybe it’s something where the people with whom I’m connected have learned not to pollute LI with their Tweets? Ah, well, we can hope!
In any case, let’s focus on adding Twitter. To proceed, click on “Add your Twitter account” and you’ll be asked by Twitter if you really want LinkedIn to access your account:
Yes? Okay then, click on “Authorize app” and after a few seconds you’ll see it set up and ready to go:
That’s it. A click on “Save changes” and you’re good to go!
Now when you go to post an update, here’s what you see:
The default on this particular menu is “Share with: Public” but as you can see, one of the options is “Public + Twitter”. Choose that and your status update just got sent to Twitterland too.
