My daughter’s pranked me and switched my News And Weather app on my Android phone to be in Russian. Not useful. How can I fix it and what else can I customize in this app?
Consolidating news sources and presenting them in an attractive manner is a mainstay of just about every device nowadays, from Apple’s “News” program to Flipboard to, yes, the News And Weather app on Android devices. Since they just present information from other sources, these apps also turn out to be easily localized, as you have rather inadvertently learned!
You’re in luck with News and Weather too, because all the menus and settings remain in English regardless of what language news you’ve opted to receive, unlike other apps where everything would be in Chinese, Thai or Russian (which makes it a lot more tricky to switch languages back!)
So let’s get your News and Weather all fixed up!
As you can see, while the news stories are in Cyrillic, the main navigational elements in the app are still in English, including the name of the location for weather reporting.
To fix it, tap on the three vertically oriented dots on the top right:
You’ll want to “Change editions…“, so tap on that.
Wait, you don’t want Russian! Tap on the tiny triangle adjacent to the current edition information and you’ll see what other editions are available:
Tap on “U.S.” to fix things as desired and you’ll see that there are different news sources that are tapped for the news feed and they’re in English, as desired:
Now while we’re at it, let’s see what you can modify on the weather pane too.
Tap on the three horizontal dots just at the top right edge of the weather information:
Prefer celsius to fahrenheit? You can fix that with “Temperature units…“, and ditto wind speed.
Want to change what city is reported, or disable the app figuring out where you are automatically? You can tweak that too, just tap on “Edit weather display…“.
If you disable “Auto-detect my location” you can keep track of your hometown weather even as you travel on business, for example. Can be quite useful.
Oh, and one more thing. On the three vertical dots button on the top right, that menu also includes the entry “Switch to light theme“. Tap it.
The result is quite pleasant:
That’s all there is to it. Easy enough once you learn about the horizontal and vertical dots!
