I like keeping an eye on my favorite teams during the season, but Facebook doesn’t include all my teams. How do I add new teams to my Facebook sports score box?
Once we all have embedded brain links with Facebook, all these sort of questions will just vanish and it’ll know what we want and our favorites before we even finish thinking the thought. How helpful that will be, right? Until then, however, we’re stuck having to fiddle with the various facets of the Facebook interface and also accept that the experience is very different on mobile versus desktop too. In fact, the Facebook sports scores box doesn’t show up in mobile without actively seeking it, while the Web-based version has a little box that shows up with whatever teams Facebook thinks you like.
Worse, you can get too darn much information if you want to avoid learning the score of a game until you can watch it from your DVR because it’s while you’re at work: Facebook doesn’t know that and will happily show you the scores. An argument against telling the site your favorite teams, right?
In any case, the icon you need to click on the desktop interface to Facebook is tiny, but it’s really the gateway to all the configuration you need. Here’s my sports scores box to get us started:
I’m a fan of the Colorado Rockies as a Colorado resident, but why it’s showing me Minneapolis vs. Los Angeles is anyone’s guess. Probably just needed something to fill the second box and picked it randomly as I’m not a fan of either team.
You can see more games either in progress or on the schedule by clicking on “See More“:
At this point it seems completely random. Okay. I can live with that, but it would be nice to have my favorite teams featured instead!
To change and specify your favorite sports teams, click on the tiny gear icon on the top right.
Rather than have you slog through a massive list of every team in every sport, Facebook breaks it down by leagues (and probably has a very different view if you’re not US-based too, for that matter). I follow the English premiere league soccer team the Tottenham Hotspur along with the Colorado Rockies, but let’s add the Denver Broncos too.
To do that I’ll click where it shows “NFL” just above the Arizona Cardinals:
This is a subset of the sports leagues available, and it’s a lot of teams! I’ll choose NFL and scroll down to find the Broncos (yeah, we started out with the NFL, but that’s okay, this way you can see all the other major leagues available).
To add it to my favorite sports teams I simply click on the “+”. You already figured that out, however, didn’t you? 🙂
Now I have three teams as my favorites:
That’s all there is to it. Easy and now I’ll see scores and upcoming games for the Spurs, the Broncos and the Rockies. Nice.
