Why doesn’t Outlook consistently show pictures in my messages?

February 6, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 3 Comments

Dave, I’m confused about how Outlook is working for me. At work when pics are attached they show in the body of the email. At home I have to open each one separately. I have looked and looked but can’t find where to make them show up automatically without having to open each one. Can you tell me where to find this setting?

How do I edit HTML files using Windows NotePad?

January 26, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 18 Comments

Dave, I am reading your book Creating Cool Web Sites and you say on page 22 “suppose you recently created the file not-yet.html in NotePad…” and go on to show how it would look on Internet Explorer with and without HTML tags. But I cannot duplicate this example!

NotePad does not let me save as .html, nor does WordPad and if I save it as Web Page in Microsoft Word 2003 it won’t work either.
I am super motivated to get going but have just about ripped all my hair out as I can’t get past the first step.

How do I change the default action with removable media on my PC?

January 13, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 8 Comments

I’m constantly inserting and removing a PCMCIA card with a digital camera’s SD card from my laptop. It becomes E: drive when installed.

Whenever I install the card, though, Windows XP prompts me to indicate what I want to do with the card. It has audio, video and pictures on it and I always want to do nothing. How can I tell XP to never try to autoplay anything on this or any card?

Why does my Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse leap around in Windows XP?

January 5, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 95 Comments

Dave, I use a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse with a computer
running Windows XP Professional. Generally speaking, everything works just fine EXCEPT THAT from time to time my mouse pointer “leaps” to the bottom
left corner of my monitor screen .. and invariably JUST as I am about to
“click!!” I’ve tried uninstalling and re-installing, but to no avail. Do you
know how this little dilemma can be cured??

How do I Speed up my Windows PC?

December 30, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Windows PC Help / 15 Comments

I work on a Dell Inspirion 2650, XP system, 128M RAM. Sometimes when
I’m working it goes into slow-motion; I’ve watched the line of text
I typed come onto the screen letter at a time long after I quit
typing. I’ve checked to make sure nothing else is running in the
background and find nothing like a virus check happening. What’s
going on and how can I fix it? It can be most annoying so I hope you
have a fast and easy fix!

How do I capture an Internet audio stream?

December 29, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics, Windows PC Help / 27 Comments

I seem to recall that I’ve read about some applications for both Mac and
Windows that let you capture a streaming audio source to a file so you can
listen to it later, slice it up, mail an excerpt to your parents, whatever.
Anyone have a clue what kind of software does this, and perhaps a few
pointers to specific applications I could download?

How can I tell if my Paypal and eBay Alerts are legit or phishing?

December 19, 2004 / Dave Taylor / PayPal Help, Spam, Scams & Security, Windows PC Help / 4 Comments

Dave, I’m getting more and more confused. I keep getting warnings and alerts from Paypal, eBay, my bank, and various other banks and financial institutions that I don’t even have accounts with, all telling me to log in and verify my account information. I’ve read about something called “phishing” and am wondering if that’s what these messages actually are?
