What’s a troll and a zombie?

February 3, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 4 Comments

Dave, I’m surrounded by strange jargon and I feel like an extra in a B-grade horror movie. One mailing list I’m on has “trolls”, and the latest virus can turn my computer into a “zombie”, and my ISP keeps talking about “demons”! Egads! Do I need some sort of exorcist to use my computer now??

What’s the Difference between DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM?

January 23, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics, Mac & MacOS Help / 233 Comments

Dave, I have just installed a new DVD burner in my computer (a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105 internal drive) and am trying to figure out what kind of blank disks I should be using. There are apparently five different blank DVD formats. Do I want DVD-R? DVD-RW? or ?? Also, if I just want to burn lots of data onto a DVD disk, can I use my Roxio Toast Titanium to do so, or do I need to use a special DVD-friendly app like iDVD?

Can I have multiple Wireless Routers?

January 15, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 18 Comments

Dave, I’m trying to get my local network set up and can’t figure out whether one wireless router will pick up a signal from the other so, say, you could
stretch the distance a wireless signal reaches? And if they do talk to
each other, would it speed up or slow down things?

And a related question: does the distance a signal travels matter, whether the
indoors signal has to travel up from a basement onto a second floor of the
house, vs. having the router on the same floor with computers using it?

How do I capture an Internet audio stream?

December 29, 2004 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics, Windows PC Help / 27 Comments

I seem to recall that I’ve read about some applications for both Mac and
Windows that let you capture a streaming audio source to a file so you can
listen to it later, slice it up, mail an excerpt to your parents, whatever.
Anyone have a clue what kind of software does this, and perhaps a few
pointers to specific applications I could download?
