SSH Tunnels? How do I use an ssh tunnel to secure my email?

February 21, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics, Mac & MacOS Help / 6 Comments

Dave, I was talking with my ISP and he suggested that I use an “ssh tunnnel” when I use my email program, Microsoft Entourage, on any public wireless networks to avoid exposing my account and password to anyone who might be sniffing the wi-fi network. Problem is, I have no idea what they’re talking about, but I’m definitely paranoid about security and the idea of point-to-point encryption sounds wonderful. Can you tell me how to set this up?

How do I create custom email filters in MSN Hotmail?

February 18, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 30 Comments

Dave, I’ve noticed that you write about Gmail a lot, but I’m hoping you can help me out with an MSN Hotmail question too: I’ve had an account on Hotmail for a long time and would like to be able to have messages from specific mailing lists automatically filed in different folders, rather than jammed into my inbox. Is that doable, and if so, how?

What’s a troll and a zombie?

February 3, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 4 Comments

Dave, I’m surrounded by strange jargon and I feel like an extra in a B-grade horror movie. One mailing list I’m on has “trolls”, and the latest virus can turn my computer into a “zombie”, and my ISP keeps talking about “demons”! Egads! Do I need some sort of exorcist to use my computer now??
