Purchasing domain name: seller keeps raising price?

July 5, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 6 Comments

I want to buy a website on Afternic.com but am put off by the agreement that they will own all the content of the website. I plan to offer creative works as well as health info – I’m a physician and want this domain because it has a “good feel” to it. And I’m reluctant to put out $1800 and have a non-exclusive license to use the website after I construct it. I’ve already applied for the website AcmeDoc.med.pro and await approval. I want AcmeDoc.com. Please advise as I want to purchase this immediately. My interest has already raised the price $100. I put a bid it for $717 and it expired after 7 days. I then put in a 24hr bid for $1050 which just got the asking price raised to $1788. Please advise ASAP.

Why does Firefox mess up my digital images?

June 18, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 4 Comments

Dave, here’s a weird one: when I look at my photographs via my Web browser in Safari, Internet Explorer or any other browser, they are shown huge, as I expect them to be (I like to pan around to view them), but when I look at the exact same image in Firefox, it’s automatically shrunken so that it’ll fit in the browser window. But I don’t want it to do that. What’s Firefox doing and how do I turn this feature off??

How do I buy a domain name?

June 15, 2005 / Dave Taylor / Computer & Internet Basics / 46 Comments

Dave, I’d like to buy a domain, but I discovered that it’s already registered by a bulk domain buying company (just check negres.com). I tried to contact them but I have received no answer.
Do you know how much these companies charge in average for a domain? Or are they focused on the traffic and clicks and will not let it go?
Any recommended approach to bid for the domain?

Dave, I get tons of email that looks like it’s from Paypal, asking me to update my account record, check that things are configured alright, or even to “notify” me that a new email address has been “added” to my account. Sheesh! How can I recognize real Paypal email and separate it out from all the phishing and fake messages in my inbox?
