Please can you help me as my new ipod nano will not turn off! I am holding down the play button as usual but there is no response, it’s just stopped working. I only bought it at Christmas.
Ah, the gorgeous iPod Nano. I wish I had one, but instead I bought an iPod Video so I can enjoy watching movies on the tiny screen instead. But you probably don’t care that I covet your Nano, especially if it’s not working properly, so let’s see…
The first thing that every iPod owner needs to know is how to restart your little MP3 player. Apple has a nice little tech note about restarting your iPod, and here’s the gist of it:
- Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
- Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
This is for the Click Wheel series of iPods only (that is, the iPod mini, iPod Photo, iPod (Click Wheel), iPod nano and iPod Video/5G).
Older iPods (I have two of ’em!) are reset with a slightly different approach:
- Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
- Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Here’s my best guess as to what’s happening with your iPod nano: you have inadvertently engaged the “hold” switch and so it’s ignoring your attempts to put it to sleep!
Oh! Apple has one more tip: “If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn’t set to go to sleep.”
Don’t miss the iPod Troubleshooting Basics page too if this doesn’t help you resolve the problem.
Hi Dave on my iPod Nano it reads Disk Mode Ok To Disconnect with a Tick in the Middle of The Screen.
And I Can’t Turn It Off At All.
thanks Dave it worked on the very first try! I have an iPod nano (1st gen.) 1GB, v1.3.1 and holding down the Menu & Select (middle) buttons for a few seconds did the trick! thanks
You are brilliant, thank you for the help : )
I have an IPOD Nana 6th gen. with alot of songs on it. My desktop computer got a virus and when I got it back ITUNES and all my songs were gone. I followed instructions from the internet on how to get songs from my nano to my desktop and it worked. Here’s my problem…I loaded a new CD to ITUNES then I plugged in my IPOD. It said it synced but I can not find the songs on my nano. What’s wrong and how can I fix it?
I don’t know how to read what you have written to others on the topic, so I’ll ask a question of my own. I can’t get my 6th gen. ipod nano to stop shuffling….makes it a bit trying to listen to a book. Thanks for any help you can give me.
I have a 6th gen 8G iPod Nano, which I’ve had for about a year and a half, and it’s fully updated (so is iTunes on my PC) and for that entire year and a half, it has behaved perfectly until last week–when I discovered a weird problem. I have a few albums that are sort of “rock-opera” style and the songs on these albums are best played in order. However, my Nano seems to feel otherwise. I will choose the album, tap the first song on the list, and it will play the aforementioned song, then shuffle to another song. I don’t choose the “Shuffle” option from the album menu. I have the “Shake to Shuffle” option turned off. It’s never done this before. Ideas?
my nano wont shut off
thanks sir, the article helped me alot:)
I don’t know if my problem is with my iPod Nano or iTunes. I have two problems actually. First, I have unchecked all my Christmas music on iTunes and my iPod seems to sync, but it’s still on there. Second, I don’t seem to have a schuffle choice on playlists, so is this not possible to do?

Hi Dave, would appreciate your guide on my Ipod Nano 4GB as It doesn’t work at the button of the set but when I plug in to the Ipod dock player it could play with the remote control. Please help.
So many years back my dad gave me an iPod nano (third generation) and I never had use for it because I had an iPod original. Just recently I have tried to turn on the iPod nano but it just freezes on a screen with an hourglass and a grey/black-ish background. We’ve charged it overnight and it still is not functioning. Please help !
Thank you for your time.

hey my iPod nano the squared version wont turn on it happens to me frequently but before it that happens it freezes suddenly so i reset it and after it don’t turn back on
Carly, try holding down the top power button and the home button for at least 30 seconds. During that time it’ll show you the “Slide to Power Off” slider: keep holding it and ignore that. It’ll go black then start up again with the Apple logo. Should fix the problem.
My iPod touch (4th generation) is stuck in a zoomed-in mode. Its on the lock screen, but I can’t type in my password since its so close up. It stays zoomed in even if I turn it off and then back on. I have no clue how it got this way ):
okay…I have a Nano 6th generation. The buttons stopped working so I sent it back to Apple. They returned it 3 days later stating nothing is wrong.
It isn’t working so I tried the reset trick and now all I have is a Nano with a backwards screen. I plugged it into my computer and nothing…
HELP! I know you are busy but I couldn’t find any answers on this forum.
