Thanks for your earlier blog entry about how to verify my account with Google Webmaster Tools! Now I want to add an additional site to my Webmaster Tools account. Can you step me through that, please?
Now you’re just being lazy. If you’ve gone through my tutorial on how to verify your Web site with Google Webmaster Tools, then how is it you haven’t noticed the “Add a site…” button? 🙂
No, it’s okay. I’m happy to offer up a tutorial on how to add a new Web site to your account. All part of the service!
Before we can proceed, however, you need to ensure that you have an account set up. You can do that by simply going to Google Webmaster Tools (herein “GWT”) and seeing if you’re logged in. Then make sure you can access your server and/or edit your home page so that you can change the meta information in the <head> of the page.
Got them both set up? Good. Now, on the GWT page, look for… you guessed it… the “Add a site…” button:
Enter the URL of your site…
Now the Webmaster Tools will tell you its recommended way for you to prove you’re the site owner. In this case, through a DNS record tweak:
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to tweak DNS records, so I’ll click on “Alternate Methods” to see what else is available:
I like adding a META tag to my Web site’s home page and if you have access to your home page, it’s certainly the fastest way to get your site verified:
Add this <meta> line to the top of your page, after the <head> tag but before the </head> tag and click on “Verify”. If it works, you’ll just see your site show up, ready to manage:
That’s all there is to it.
