Why won't my Sony PSP see my wireless network?

I am trying to upload version 2.5 on my PSP. I went to network connection and did the first step. Next it came up with the screen asking my SSID and enscriptioon. I chose scan and it came up with:

wireless -- WEP -- 80%
belkin54g -- none -- 10%

Whenever I chose the wireless WEP one, it would ask me for my WEP key. Whats is a WEP key? How do I find out what my WEP key is?

When I chose the belkin54g connection (which would only come up in certain spots)it always had a weak connection and when I chose it it would still not connect. Whenever I would try to connect, the messages "A connection error has occurred. The access point was not detected" OR "A connection error has occurred.(80410D07)

Then when it said address settings I chose "Easy". Does that have to do anything with it. All I want to do is upgrade my PSP system. Can you please help me?

Dave's Answer:

While it would be nice if wireless networks were a breeze to work with, completely transparent and magically simple, the fact is that there's still a lot of complexity, a variety of semi-compatible protocols and the entire puzzle of security and privacy.

That's what you're seeing with your problems here.

With your wireless network, your Sony PSP won't connect because you need a special password that was set by the wireless network administrator. That's what the WEP is: Wireled Equivalency Privacy. It's one of a set of different password and security protocols (all incompatible with each other, unfortunately) that let you work with a wireless network without exposing all of your network traffic to anyone within range.

A WEP password typically either looks like a word or phrase, if you're lucky, or a sequence of letters and digits similar to c1164fd533, not exactly something you're going to be able to guess. Indeed, if the "wireless" network is your own, hopefully you know the password and can enter it when you configure that access point on the PSP itself. If you don't know the password then that network is inaccessible to you.

In terms of the beikn54g network, I believe you're exactly right when you guess that the signal is just too weak for the PSP to work with it, even though the PSP device "sees" the network when you do a scan. Can you move closer to that base station so you have at least a 50% strength signal indicator? That might be all you need to do for this to work, actually.

Also, if you're just trying to upgrade your PSP, please do note that you can accomplish that with a regular computer and a USB connection between your PSP and your computer. I explain the process here: Sony PSP Firmware Update Instructions.

Finally, for those of you who run or utilize wireless networks, there are a lot of important security and privacy issues you need to know about, as my colleague Chris Buechler and I explain in great detail -- along with tons of how-to information about remaining secure on open networks -- in our new book Connect Safely Wireless Security and Privacy Guide for Windows.

Is there any way at all to bypass a wep password on a wireless connection?

Posted by: yovanni gonzalez at December 13, 2005 7:25 PM

Now it wouldn't be much of a security mechanism if you could easily defeat it, would it, Yovanni? :-)

i am really confused on how to connect my wirless on my psp. i just dont get it. could you help me with almost every step?

Posted by: michael shipley at December 25, 2005 9:31 PM

Michael, it is confusing. Here's what you need:

1. Turn the WLAN switch on the PSP to "on" (it's a silver slider switch on the lower left *edge* of the device)

2. Access to a wireless Internet network that doesn't have a password.

Then you should be able to 'scan' for networks, pick out the one you want to use, and go online.

[Note: While the PSP supports various wifi password schemes, notably WEP, I haven't had any luck with password-protected sites myself and haven't heard from others that it worked either]

Hi Dave, can you please help me? I just bought a wireless Netgear router to get online with my PSP. I have been online with it before but now it gives me an internal error message of 8008273A. I called SONY and Netgear and no one could help me. they told me to mail my PSP in for repairs. I have 100% signal strength. It gives me the error at the last step when I try to save the settings. SONY could not even figure out what that error code ment. Please help.

Posted by: todd at December 28, 2005 6:12 PM

My psp wep problem is a bit detailed - I know my wep key and have tried it but with no success. When I have setup Win XP PCs to access my wlan, I also need to provide other settings, like if the wep key is "shared" and whether it is 64-bit, 129-bit etc. but the PSP doesn't ask for those. Maybe it expects certain ones and my network is not what it expects?

Posted by: Richard at January 2, 2006 6:29 AM

Sounds like the Sony PSP is junk. It does not communicate with encrypted wireless networks which basically means it does not work on line.

Posted by: Ed at January 9, 2006 2:53 PM

You could perhaps decide that's the case, Ed, or you could look at the unit and say "wow, it plays world-class games, I can download thousands of songs, photos and even DVD-quality movies and TV shows, I can buy UMD disks that give me even better movies, AND it can play multiplayer through adhoc wifi or the Internet and gives me a Web browser. Darn cool"

I guess it's a matter of perspective. If I were only looking for a Web access device, I wouldn't buy a PSP, but that's like buying a car because you want somewhere comfortable to sit... :-)

i need help where would it tell me my wireless routers WEP code im trying to get internet on my psp

Posted by: joe at January 17, 2006 5:46 PM

If you're being asked for a WEP password, then it's because you're trying to connect to a secure network. You'll need to get the password from the owner of that network, not me. It's like saying 'how can I get into my neighbor's house?" in some sense...

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 17, 2006 6:11 PM

dave im not asking what my WEP code is im asking where can i find it when we were setting up this wireless router we just turned it on nothing asked for our password...do you kno if it says it on the box or anything like that? or on your computer i dont know.......

Joe, see this article for information on how to find your WEP key:

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 19, 2006 10:38 AM

Dave, I had been using my neighbors internet connection for a while, (they dont care), then i went on a trip. When I came back I tried to get on the internet again, and it always says connection failed, check the security settings and check again.
But, the thing is that it doesn't have any security settings (its listed as NONE). Please anyone tell me if you know why.

Posted by: Willie at January 21, 2006 8:22 PM

Willie, sounds like you might just need to recreate the access information. Go back to System Settings -> Network, scan again, find their network, and reconnect to it.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at January 22, 2006 10:08 AM

Yea I did. I think this has something to do with the fact that they have a different computer now. I dunno. I found another connection that i can go on, at least, so i can use that for now. the only thing is that i have to go outside to connect to it.

Posted by: Willie at January 22, 2006 3:47 PM

Oh nevermind, I didn't do that. But now I just did, and it worked! Thanks Dave!!!

Posted by: Willie at January 22, 2006 7:47 PM

hi,
how do i find out the WEP key for my wireless router????
It says:
SSID
(the name of my modem)
Security
WEP
Strength
80%

I tried to say my security as normal, but it doesnt detect the modem!
How do u find WEP???!?!!!

i have a weird problem. when i connect in adhoc mode to my wireless card on my laptop it will only send and not receive. i have 2 different cards the other will receive and not send data. i have used adhoc before with these cards and my psp with no problems till just the other day. anyone have any ideas?

Posted by: peregrinus at February 7, 2006 10:52 AM

hi whats the key???

Posted by: adam at February 9, 2006 10:44 AM

The "key" is the actual password for the wireless network: I can't give you the key because, well, then the ostensibly secure network would actually be completely insecure. :-)

Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 9, 2006 2:56 PM

wat up dave
my mom just bought a new wireless modem and i can go anywhere in the house but i don't know the WEP key password. Do you know where i can find it?

Posted by: Tony at February 9, 2006 7:22 PM

Hey Dave.
I was wondering, is there any particular reason why you have not decided to address the issue of the 80410D07 error that PSP's are generating? I myself have the same error, and was wondering if you could help me resolve it. I have a 1.5 version firmware, and was able to previously able to connect until a few weeks ago, using the WIPEOUT exploit. As far as I know, nothing has changed really. The computers and routers are all the same, and have not been modified. There is no WEP key, and no other security at all. I have double checked this. What is wrong? Thanks for your help,
Jake.

Posted by: Jake Hoshgothen at March 2, 2006 11:30 PM

I don't know anything about the WIPEOUT exploit, Jake, which is one reason I haven't addressed the topic. Another one is that I'm just darn busy and there are only so many hours in the day... :-)

I'd be very interested in hearing the results of you trying a different open wifi network and seeing if it works for you.

I have 100% connection and there is no security but when i try to get on it says a connection error has occurred. A connection to the access point could not be established. Check the security settings for the network and try again later. wat should i do

Posted by: Dalton at March 26, 2006 6:59 PM

Eric, that's a classic sign of not having the right password for a protected network. Does your wifi network indicate that you need WEP or WPA? And did you enter a password?

Dalton, I think that there are some wireless networks that just aren't configured properly for DHCP somehow. Have you tried the wireless network with a PC (or Mac) and verified it works properly and lets the computer get on the Internet?

Help to connect to your wireless router with your PSP.

First. Make sure your settings on your router are setup and you have written down what your settings are. If your PC is already connected to the router open your web browser and type one of the following address (e.g http://192.168.1.1)dependant on type of router you have:

Linksys:
http://192.168.1.1
Username = admin
Password = admin

3Com:
http://192.168.1.1
Username = admin
Password = admin

D-Link:
http://192.168.0.1
Username = admin

Microsoft Broadband:
http://192.168.2.1
Username = admin
Password = admin

Netgear:
http://192.168.0.1
Username = admin
Password = password

Make a note your SSID or put in a new one (keep it simple).

Go to the security option. Choose WEP 128bit. Type your passphrase in and make a note of the encrypted version generated (think it's 26 digits).

Also, make sure Wireless B mode (or mixed B & G modes) are selected. PSP's don't work with 'G'. Save settings and exit.

Go to network connections on PSP and scan for networks. Select yours (will display name of your SSID). When prompted enter the details you have selected or entered on your router for your WEP security etc.

You should then be connected to the internet via your PSP. Hope that helps it worked for me!

1. you need a wireless router that goes wirelesly go to your psp.

3.near the router your the name in the router is going to be in your psp.

4.Make sure that your router is strong.

5.After that test the connection.

6.if its between 60-100 speed its okay.

7.now go to network update.

8.Update the networking extensions. it will give you a warings of internet.

9.Go to the internet browser.

10. Write the adress like google.com

11. It will be there for like 15 seconds.

12.if you have problems look below.

QUESTION:WHY DOES IT SAY DNS ERROR OUCCURED!!1

AWNSER:MAKE SURE ITS NEAR THE ROUTER OR YOUR MIGHT HAVE TO WRITE THE SECONDARY DNS.

QUESTION: WHY DOES IT SAYS CONNECTION IS OUCCRED.

AWNSWER. BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE A ROUTER IN YOUR AREA.

This comment posted by KEV. Is just spot on.

I dont have any of the routers listed. I just bough a cheap one call PEAK 802.11g/DLS Wireless Router and It works great with my PSP. I could only get my o2 XDA Mini and my PSP to work when my network was Unsecure, Now that ive changed the settings to the below Its working great.

I did however find it easier to make my security ASCII. I tried wep but it kep saying the wep key i was entering was invalid on my PSP. (IT WAS THE CORRECT CODE) Plus it takes ages to enter the 26 code.

So if ur PSP cannot connect to a secure network and only an unsecure. DO WHAT THE MAN SAYS BELOW.

Help to connect to your wireless router with your PSP.

First. Make sure your settings on your router are setup and you have written down what your settings are. If your PC is already connected to the router open your web browser and type one of the following address (e.g http://192.168.1.1)dependant on type of router you have:

Password = admin

D-Link:
http://192.168.0.1
Username = admin

Microsoft Broadband:
http://192.168.2.1
Username = admin
Password = admin

Netgear:
http://192.168.0.1
Username = admin
Password = password

You may have answered this question already, but I'm just wondering if I can save myself the cost of a USB cable by connecting wirelessly to my Powerbook to grab pictures, songs, and movies for my PSP. I'm getting the same error message that most of the folks on here are getting when trying to connect to my open wireless connection that I created with my AirPort.

Thanks,
Matt

I noticed a lot of people were saying they had a "connection error" and no other details. I came to the embarassing realization that the WLAN switch wasn't in the right place on my psp... I kept entering my SSID and re-entering my WEP key over and over. In case there are other psp noobs like me who didn't realize why they can't see their routers when they scan.... THAT LITTLE SWITCH IN THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THE PSP TURNS ON YOUR WIRELESS!!!! *sulks away*

Hi,

I don't know weather it's my PSP that's screwed up, or my computer. i know it's not my PSP because it was worked in other houses. My problem is, i can't go on the internet, every time i would try, it would say, "Obtaining IP address.
Please wait..." then it would say, "A connection error has occurred. the attempt to obtain the IP address timed out."

what should i do to fix this? the PSP or computer. if any, please tell me.

Posted by: Malcolm at August 23, 2007 1:28 PM

Alright, I know my WEP key, and I put it in, and this fixed my problem a while back. Now my dad got a laptop and switched us to VerizonFIOS. I have no idea which one made it not work, but one of them did something.
I now can get through EVERYTHING on this, connecting to the network and such, but when I try to connect to the internet it says the connection is failed. I have no idea what is going on, and I don't have time to sift through everything online to do this. I don't understand what happened, and I've tried both internal and external IP combinations and DNS things...not that I know what the DNS does or anything.

Help?

I know this thread is old but I need some help. I am having a problem where my PSP will only detect my router part of the time even if im sitting right next to the router it will always show it at 100% when it does see it but it only sees it about once in every 15 scans. For some reason it seems to not have any problems at night though. I do have it set up on WPA-PSK (TKIP) and thought that might be a problem but even if it was it should still be able to at least see the connection.

PSP sees my network, it has 100% signal strength but the security is not supported. I have a Linksys WRT300N wireless router. How can I connect to my network?
Many thx for any help you can provide.

Posted by: Jose at December 23, 2007 12:42 PM

Just my two cents, hopefully this will help. For some reason, my PSP won't work unless my router is set to B AND G support, not just G. Once changed to Mixed support for both types of network, it works just fine. I said to me that it was a security issue with my WAP, but it wasnt.

Good luck!

Hi

I own a PSP lite 2000 series. Bought it in Del, India and got custom firmware 3.7 M33 loaded. Since then the WLAN is not working. Everytime i scan for a network (I have all network codes and two laaptops work on an ad-hoc setup), the psp reports an error and comes back to the main menu. I dont know whether is a hardware error or a firmware patching error. I cannot play on WLAN with my friends.

Please please provide some feedback.

so um hi the (wep key) is a key for secured networks that have u know keys kinda like passwords for ur networks so other people won't drive up 2 ur house and steal ur connection that if u don't have a wep key code so it is located on the back of ur router on the bottom try some of those keys itwill work

Posted by: Reuben at February 18, 2008 8:14 PM

more issues than solutions.

The guide was nice. Followed step by step.
Still no connection. No wep just wide open.
Router isant the issue. PC's connect without no issues and they are wireless.
PSP see's the router but will not connect.
Funky.

hey there i need a hand. ive just got my new psp, (ive owned one previously) and im trying to get it to connect to my wireless network. i have a very good D-Link Router and ive got it configured on network magic. ive set up wireless to my bros laptop and wired to my ps3 and xbox 360 as well as the wii. now since ive just got this psp im trying to configure it to wireless internet but i cant seem to get it, each time i try to test the connection (ive done the scan and got all the settings and im not using a wep or wpa, no passwords, i just have my system locked so i dont have intruders) anyway, when click add new devices on network magic it unlocks the router and internet so i should be able to add the psp. each time i try to connect with the psp it says "a connection error has occured. a connection to the access point could not be established. check the security settings for the network and try again. Now ive done this several times. damn thing. so like i said ive tried everyting i know, and ive already done it once so i dont know why it wont work now, can you help me out?

Hey Dave i have a problem
for my psp when i go to scan it shows ssid and the name of the wirless connection with security as not supported and signal strength as 85 and it wont let me conect to it. why is it like that?

Posted by: Bryan at September 8, 2010 5:10 PM

I resolved my issue.
PSPGo / Verizon FiOS / Router: M1424-WR

When connecting to my wireless network, I repeatedly received a network connection error indicating my network signal may be too weak. No way. I scratched my head until my fingers hurt. I setup the connection over and over with the same results (thinking my WEP Key may have been enterred incorrectly). All other devices (9 total) are communicating without failure. I rebooted my router, and all is well. The PSP was assigned an IP address, and I am now connected. Hope this helps.

I am trying to connect to the internet. When I select scan the SSID of my home wireless network appears at the top of a list. In the Security column it says Not Supported although the signal strength is 100%. My network is also grey and unselectable. What do I do to connect?

Posted by: GTGeno at December 9, 2010 11:54 PM

To those people that are having the issue with the SSID showing up with the Security saying "not supported" and grayed out, I have an answer for you. Through troubleshooting on my routers security settings I saw it said WPA2. I changed the setting to WPA and it worked. So, that is a likely fix for that issue!
After changing it to WPA you will have to reconfigure your other wireless devices to that setting as well.

i all..I have been having the same problems with my Nintendo DSi, PSP and PSP Go.
The problem is that those devices only use 802.11b. Most wireless routers these days use 802.11g but should be backwards compatible with 802.11b. Make sure in your wireless router settings that '802.11g operation only' is disabled. Once disabled, your devices should be able to connect correctly. Hope this helps.

I am trying to connect a PSP. My laptop and other devices are successfully connected in the house ... I even put the PSP within 3 inches of the router and it detects the WiFi connection at 100 % and my neighbors at 60%. Of course I used mine. I checked the information the SSID and the WPA atr correct but when I connect it says "No network is detected." ??? Is PSP just junk when connecting to a network? I am trying to download music and need the software on the PSP.

I received a Sony PSP-3000 as a birthday gift. For two weeks I fought to make the PSP connect to my Wi-Fi as stated per Sony. I have a better than average wireless router.
It is a Linksys E2000 N router, up to networking standards. After fooling with it for two weeks. I contacted Sonny aka SCEA tech support. Spoke to Elvis, after going over troubleshooting. He placed me on hold came back ant told me that the PSP does not work with the N rated routers. It was a problem Sony knew about and never fixed. Nor did they advise future customers of the issue. I contacted the HQ of SCEA in CA. Spoke to a Jan, who explained that they were aware of the issue and did nothing to fix or make customer aware of the problem. I was given three options: 1) Buy another/different router (i.e. a b/g rated), 2) goes to a Wi-Fi hotspot like McDonalds, Starbucks or 3) adjust the parameters of my router overtime I want to use the PSP. I now have a $139.09 paper weight, due to the failure of Sony not providing proper info on packaging and website

a wep is a password of your router or modem i cant remember but u could go 2 ur pc and go 2 network options or wut ever then it will say ur router or modem password

Posted by: Anthony at July 24, 2011 2:48 AM

@ MyworldPSP
He is correct besides the WPA encryption part. Most routers by default are set to a WEP Key which is the older unsecure way of protection. However WPA and WPA2 are the newer ways of protecting your Wireless Internet connection. You can easily log on your router with these default(if you didn't change username or password) settings to check what encryption your router is set at.

Then Click on My Wireless Network.
If your PS3, PSP IS NOT picking up your network or keeps getting cut out, change your Wireless Channel to 11, its set to automatic by default.

I have a PSP 3004 am using a Linksys E3000 router. My PSP is not connecting to the wireless even though all other devices are easily. It does connect using other public wireless access points. So I called CISCO support who advised that P2P is not reliably connecting when using WPA2 Personal OR WPA2/WPA Mixed node and instead we should reset security to WPA Personal. Dave or anyone know what all this means and how we can connect
