Why can't iTunes Find My Songs?

I have an iTunes/iPod problem. In August I created a library on one of my computers with about 150 songs. I then created another library on a different computer. I now want to put my old songs from the first library back into my iPod. So, today I opened my first library and hooked up my iPod. For all the songs I clicked (most) I got a message that said "This song could not be used because the original file could not be located. Would you like to locate it? " I was so confused. Have I lost all of my songs? The library hasn't been opened in a while but is that a reason to mess up all the songs? Please help me!! I want to listen to these songs.

Dave's Answer:

This sounds like a problem with an iPod not being able to sync to two libraries at the same time. If that's the case, then your easiest solution would be to move the 150 song library over from one computer to the other, I think.

But let's make sure that the problem isn't with the music library itself. Do you know the name of any one song in the 150? If so, open up the Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) then type in locate "XXXX" where "XXX" is a fragment of the song name you remember, with appropriate upper and lower case letters.

You should get something like this:

$ locate "Apple Tree"
/Volumes/X2/iTunes Library/Michael Franks/Tiger In The Rain/Underneath
The Apple Tree.mp3
/Volumes/X2/iTunes Library/The Andrews Sisters/The Best of The
Andrews Sisters/Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree (With Anyone Else
But Me).mp3

That will tell you the files from your music library are located on your disk (mine is in /Volumes/X2/iTunes Library/ ).

Now open iTunes and when it says "do you want to locate it" say YES and navigate to that directory. I think it'll resolve all of them, but if not, you could also open the folder in the Finder and just drag all the album folders onto the iTunes app itself.

Or, if you want to move all the songs over, use the Finder to move into the music library, click on all the song folders you're interested in, then command-click on any one selected folder to get the pop-up menu and choose "Make Archive". It'll create a ZIP file that has all the songs you want to move: copy that to your newer computer, then double click it to unpack and simply drag all the music folders onto the iTunes application itself.

Try this, and report back to us how it worked out.

It sounds more like to me that you added the files to the library and it wasn't set to automatically consolidate the music files in the library and you then deleted the originals thinking it had them in your liibrary also but they weren't there. Of course, I may be wrong and it may have just lost your library locations.

my problem is that i cant find my songs in any folders, i have a dell. i'm just trying to move my library on iTunes from one username to the others. i did accomplish to move it to one username but when i went back to the original username it could'nt locate the "original file" of most of my songs. to make matters worse i erased the library by clicking on one song that i could find, when i double-clicked it, it then replaced all my songs(which had exclamation points next to them)and all my playlists. Now i'm searching My Computer for my songs but i can't find any. Please help me, i'm soooooOOO frustrated can you please help me???!?

First, I had a problem when loading a cd into the ipod from my pc laptop, where the original library is stored, and the itune program did not retrieve the song title and artist.
Second, after messing with the pc, I decided to use my wife's mac to load the cd on the ipod, resulting the losing of my whole pc library pn the ipod. Song titles and artists were still not retrieved with the cd loading from the mac.
What can be done to restore the pc library and correct the pc itune program to retrieve song titles and artists?

Dave My Main Savior to be, help me, I can't access my music library in iTunes. It use to be there. I was able to download songs from this library onto iTunes. Now when I plug in my iPod "Richard's iPod" is displayed but my library is just highlighted, I cant do anything with it, can't play songs, can't download.

If I try a message appears.. "The iPod "Richards iPod"is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library'. Dave I hit the yes button with my iPod shuffle and lost the songs that were on it. No big deal it was just an experiment. There is also a little picture of a lock where the load up bar is. Sorry I wasn't done. Dave can you please tell me what going on. Thanks so much Richard

Sounds like what you might need is an iPod sync application so you can grab your files before you re-associate the unit with your computer. Why it lost that association is baffling, but if you're using a Mac, you'll find that versiontracker.com has a number of different matches for the search "iPod sync", and if you're a PC user, go to download.com and do the same search.

We have a household "server" that has most of our music on it. Most have been copied from CD's (yes, that we'ver purchsed) I also have some music on my own computer.

Although all songs are listed in my library, most of them have the exclamation point next to them and iTunes can't find/play them when i click on them. I have tried redirecting iTunes to the network computer that houses the songs but that doesn't work. I'll be da&&%#$(#ed if I'm going to manually direct each and every one of 3,000+ songs.

Help!?

The wierd things is that if i go into properties my itunes still says that i have 5.67Gb worth of material in their, which is my colplete library.

do you have any suggestions on how i can get my library back so that i can see it.

Dave, I had my Ipod hooked up to my computer and when I signed onto Itunes it wiped out my library, completely and the songs on my pod. I cannot find them on my hard drive. Is there anyway to get them back?

Thanks!

If your songs are still on your iPod, you can download one of the many shareware ipod sync programs that will let you copy them onto your computer and then import them into iTunes again, without much fuss. If they're gone from the iPod too, well, bad news. They're gone.

To find these sync programs, go to http://www.download.com or http://www.versiontracker.com/ (PC or Mac, respectively) and search for "iPod" or "iPod sync".

This stuff makes me want to get rid of my iPod. I recorded my own voice on my iPod and I can't even download it because the iPod is so restrictive. This isn't copyrighted material, it's my own damn voice!!!! I should be able to pull it off of my iPod like any other computer file.

Recently I had to have my Dell laptop re-formatted. This meant it had to be wiped clean. Before wiping the laptop I burned a bunch of CDs with all the songs I had loaded to my iPod. I also saved the itunes *.itl and *.xml files that were on the computer.

I would like to know if there is a way to restore the playlists I had originally created on my laptop so that when I re-install iTunes I can re-create my playlists. Thanks.

Mike, I'm talking about a Mac when I talk about "Applications". A Windows system works differently. Check:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/about_itunes_windows.html

Jonathan, I'm really not sure what's happened with your iPod because you definitely can add and delete playlists without affecting what music is actually on your iPod. When you *browse* your music collection by Artist, say, do you see all your songs, or have they all vanished?

Posted by: Dave Taylor at July 26, 2006 8:03 AM

My problem is having multiple Ipods (two Nano's, and the 60Gig Ipod), and multiple computers. My wife likes some of the songs my daughter has on her Ipod, and I am not sure how I am going to add those to her Ipod without wiping out her whole library of existing songs. I have found a nifty freeware tool called "Ipod Dump" which basically "dumps" your Ipod's music onto another computer's library. You can find it at http://www.download.com under "Ipod Dump". After you install it, you copy the executable to the root of your Ipod and run it from there. Once you run it, all of your songs on your Ipod will show up and then you can "dump" those songs onto the computer. Be sure to read the help files to understand all the options and how to use it. It takes some getting use to, but it's not bad for a freebie.

Dave, thanks for your great articles. But in my case, the songs are there in the hard disk, but iTunes does not "see" them (after changing my booting hard disk by a new one with a new name and reorganizing the folders containing the songs). They all have an exclamation mark and if I double click one of them, it does not play but a prompt allows me to localize it. Then it plays OK.

The problem is that I have several thousands of such songs sorted in several folders and sub-folders. How to fix that at once without having to do it ony-by-one?

I know that I can drag and drop such folders of songs into iTunes, but I want to do it without losing my ratings and other information like last played, etc. I do not know how to accomplish that.

In a nutshell, these songs were localized by iTunes at a time in other booting disk, but now they need to re relocalized without losing their information. And the original hard disk is no longer available.

i saved songs on my playlist but i cant seem to find them

Posted by: tina at November 14, 2006 4:11 PM

I have a weird problem with my iPod. On some (not all, not often) occasions when I add music and then try to play it by artist it doesn't list all the music by that artist, some (usually one) but not all. The songs are there because I can find them by song. The only way I have found to get it to work correctly is to do a restore on the iPod after I have added the music. I have two iPods and both have the same situation happen to them. I also have been through three Macs since iPod came out, and this situation has followed me from mac to mac. So I am pretty sure this is not a hardware issue. It seems to have started after apple did the update a couple years back that scrambles the filenames on iPod.

For the people who had trouble getting music onto their own iPod, I had the same problem and I have a solution for you.

In iTunes (I have Windows) go to Edit -> Prefrences. Then go to the iPod tab. You should see a white box with two options above it. Both are about your iTunes playlist and updating your iPod. If you try one or another.. I'm sure one will work. I hope my advice helps.

Hey dave, i was trying to put songs onto my ipod mini and it was trying to upload and the ipod was full. It popped up with that message. Then it popped up with something that said would you like to create a selection list to go on our ipod (or something liek that) and i clicked ok. So a new playlist popped up called Max's ipod selected list. (or sumthing like that) So i took out the ipod and the only playlist on the ipod was that one with all the songs on it. So i deleted a couple of songs to have room to put more songs on. I then deleted that playlist from the itunes. All the other paylists i had were still there and all the songs so i thought it would be ok. WHen i deleted it it wiped all the songs off the ipod. Now when i try to upload them back on it says 'songs on the iPoMax's iPod cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist'. what can i do about this and get the songs back onto the iPod. I had a playlist in iTunes (windows) where my music to put on my shuffle was (all the best songs for running). I store all my music on my external hard drive. When I didn't have the external plugged in, and went to charge my shuffle, it deleted all the songs. I plugged the external back in, but itunes now wants me to manually locate every file on the playlist. Is there any way to tell it to just search for the whole playlist in the file it should be in? I don't have the time to redirect all of the songs...

Dave, I don't mean to even the slightest bit redundant but i my itunes running on Windows. I have around 1600 songs on my external HD. One day i connected my iPod to the PC and all my songs displayed in itunes but all came up with exclamation points. As i clicked on the songs i got the error message that everyone else gets "can't locate file...blah, blah". So when i manually locate the file the song plays but when i disconnect from i tunes and reconnect...the same problem occurs. I see all my songs in my external HD so i know they are there but for some reason my itunes is not recognizing it. Can you assist me?

Posted by: Sean at December 10, 2007 8:21 AM

Henriette, I'm sorry to say that there's not a CD (or DVD) in the world that can store 15GB of information. A CD can hold about 700MB, so you'd need about 22 CDs. a DVD can hold about 4GB, though, so that'd be easier if your computer can burn DVDROM disks: that'd be 4 DVDs of music. Somehow, though, I bet you have more than 15GB of music... :-)

Sean, I would go into the preferences / settings for iTunes and make sure that it's looking for your music library in the right place on the correct disk. Then you can have it rescan your computer for music and hopefully it'll all be fixed.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at December 10, 2007 11:55 AM

Oops, seems like Mr. Dave Taylor doesnt happen to know whats going on in the world today....you can store 25GB on Blue Ray Discs, and 50GB on Dual Layer Blue Ray, you can already buy commercially available Blu-Ray Recorders (around £400). I will forgive the indiscretion if you are not technically minded ;)

However thats besides the point :p

I have a similar situation only my data is located on a network volume, iTunes is one of my other PCs. iTunes is set to copy the files/folders locally when you add them into the play list across the network, even after this it still cannot locate some of them without me manually setting the pointer...even though it just downloaded them....not how i said some...this doesnt happen with them all...

I have had serious problems with my ipod where I could not transfer my library to a new computer. I have been at this for 4 months with various different people helping me. I have eventually managed to get all my library on my new computer "a Dell Inspiron" however every time i click on a song it says it cannot locate the original. the library now looks ok however it will not play songs until I manually find it. any ideas ? thanks in advance

i try dragging music from my itunes library to my ipod but when i do it won't let me put the music on my ipod.

Posted by: Johnson at May 7, 2008 1:52 AM

I have two problems:

1. I can't download track titles from itunes when I copy my cd to itunes.

2. When I attempt to update my itunes software, I get the following message:

Error reading to file. Verify that you have access to that directory c:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\etc\America\Zone Info\Rainy_River.

Thank you in advance!

Hello! I recently bought an iphone and updated stuff any synced stuff last weekend. Today I connected my iphone to computer, opened up itunes, and all songs have gone have library. When this has happened before (always unexpectedly!) I have simply recopied the files to the itunes folder from my harddrive where they still appear but it messes up all my "added to" dates and deletes playlists. Is there a better/another way of doing it? Have checked library link in itunes is correct...it is...but still won't recognise location.

Dave,

Itunes is no longer able to find songs which were not purchased from the istore directly or downloaded from CD's. I have around 1400 songs which have been downloaded from other sites and when I click on these songs in itunes it says it cannot locate the file for each of them. I have searched my hard drive and it appears they are nowhere to be found- I don't know how but apparently they have ALL been deleted/removed from the hard drive. Is there any way I can get these songs back?? I have not synced my ipod yet so I am wondering if I can retrieve the files from there somehow? HELP- I am incredibly frustrated and can't imagine what I am gonna do if I find I have lost all these files... I am hoping you can offer some type of solution to this problem.

Thanks,

Dave

I just released a tool at sourceforge, which dummy-users can use, when iTunes "lost" their files. It is tested with iTunes 8.0.2. It searches all files in your music directory. But additionally, it also works, when you renamed your files, not just moved them (comparing file names and letting you choose out of the most propable).

"DOWNLOAD":http://itunesrepair.sourceforge.net/

(hope you do not regard this as spam).

Dave,
i was running out of space on my C drive, so I followed itunes instructions to transfer the library to the f drive. I followed the instructions to the letter, however after I "Consolodated library", Itunes pops up with an empty library. I double checked my new library location and it is f/music file, exactly where the music moved to (took 7 hours). So I never deleted any files. I now have all my music on both the f and c files (copies) I have read all the differences btw the music folder and the library files. But still cant hook the two correct ones up. When I try to system restore, apparantly there was so much on my C drive previously, that windows could never create any restore points!!! How would you best reconsolidate the itunes library with its directive files??? HELP

Posted by: Kevin at May 23, 2009 4:19 PM

Kevin, I don't really understand what you're saying. Are you sure that the songs and artists are *in* the iTunes Store? It doesn't have all CDs by all musicians. If you know that it is in the Store and you can't get to it, well, um, try using someone else's computer to search for it? Then check to see if you have any parental controls or something enabled on your own computer? Good luck.

I have all of my library on an external hard drive...

I made the mistake of upgrading to itunes 9 without the external drive on...

As part of the upgrade, V9 reset all the file locations it couldn't find to null... and so now I have to relocate the files one by one...

is there a faster way to do this with my 9,000 songs?!

Craig, go to Preferences and just change the location of your library to the external drive. That should do it...

The best Thing to do after you find out which folder on your hard drive your music is in(Mine is on an external HDD to save space on my Laptop for games)click EDIT on the top bar and select preferences or use the shortcut Ctrl+, once in the preferences window select advanced. there is a box labeled "iTunes Media folder location" click Change... and input the folder location or navigate to.

2. Bought new laptop
3. have 250GB ext hd full of music
4. bought new 750GB ext hd to transfer the library on old laptop, and everything from the 250GB

I used home sharing to copy old library to 250GB. Then I jucst copied the 250 to the new 750. I turned off the 250 and tried to play files from the 750 but all items in itunes had the ! next to them and said could not find file want to locate. What do i need to do, I am not very knowledgable with this kind of stuff, and am trying to avoid shelling out even more money to take it to Geek Squad.

Hi this problem is similar to some of the ones you've answered on your website but not exactly the same. My computer usually recognises my external hard drive, a WD My Book containing my music, as WD My Book (G), the letter it assigned it to differentiate it from other external devices. Yet when I click on a song to play, it now gives me the standard message: "This song could not be used because the original file could not be located. Would you like to locate it? " and places an exclamation mark at the front . When I look for it, it finds it in "G" and copies it into the itunes folder, next to the title with an exclamation next to it. Can you explain what is wrong and how I might correct it? Thanks!

I closed itunes completely, then held the shift key while re-opening itunes so that I can select which library to open, but when I select my original, it opens the folders (music/podcasts/videos/etc) all the way to the point of specific podcasts I'm subscribed to or albums I have uploaded, but then shows nothing in those individual folders and I am unable to select anything to actually open. I've been trying all weekend to get my music moved from one laptop to another. I've attempted this twice, once using a flash drive and another time using my ipod to move the music files. They appear to be in the correct place and are showing in iTunes however they all have an exclamation point next to them. They play if the flash drive is plugged it and that's it. The path showing in preferences - advanced appears to be where the music is right now so I don't know why it's not locating my files. Also I have about 1700 songs in iTunes but when I try to synch my iPod on the new laptop it only downloads 97 of them! What gives??

Posted by: courtney at June 28, 2010 8:07 AM

Courtney, it sounds like you may not be allowing iTunes to copy your files.

When you open the new iTunes, go to Preferences > Advanced and make sure COPY FILES TO ITUNES MEDIA FOLDER WHEN ADDING TO LIBRARY is checked. Then go to FILE > ADD TO LIBRARY and locate your old iTunes folder on your flash drive.

Posted by: Tim at July 20, 2010 9:11 PM

Sorry, Tim. I don't understand why you need to create two libraries? If you create a playlist that's her music and use that as the basis of sync'ing her iPod, and another for your own, you can easily have thousands of songs in your music library without a problem. I sync four or five iPod/iPhone/iPad devices with a single iTunes library using just this sort of approach.

have a great many cd albums on my Mac itunes Why is it that I can not find the album and its playlist but instead the songs are listed by the name of the artist and in alphabetical order rather than by album

Posted by: gary Stotsky at August 17, 2010 12:29 PM

I appreciate your answer to the multiple library question. If I can actually access my original library I will add her content as a seperate playlist, as you advised. The problem I have is that I am unable to open any of my content. Can you tell me how I can get this back using iTunes so that I can then add the second playlist?

Dave I need help!
I backed up my itunes library into two external hard drives, then I formated my laptop and moved the library again to the newly formated laptop (with Windows 7). Now I can not find the individual songs. The folders are there (in the pc, and the two external HD) but I open them and there are no MP3 files. Itunes obviously can't find them and I am puzzled. I have done this several times when I have formated my PC but have never had this problem. The Itunes music folder is 26GB but there is no music. Please help me!

Thank you.

Im having a problem with itunes and Im not sure what the cause is.idk if it has anything to do with when i updated to the newer version of itunes (9.1 or something, i dont remember...& i also didnt use itunes for a couple days after so idk when this problem actually started) but now whenever i click to play a song that i had imported to itunes from any cd (im pretty sure those are the only ones not playling) it says "The song "......" can not be used because the original file can not be found.Would you like to locate it?" and when i click to locate the song the documents thing pops up but nothings there and even when i type in the song name or anything it says that the file is invalid. i looked for these songs everywhere on my laptap, in every file, and doc.,(&even the recylce bin) but i cant find them anywhere bcuz i know some people said i may have changed a file name or moved them by accident but they are nowhere to be found in my pc laptop. idk if i am just not looking in the right places or if those songs are completley gone off itunes and my pc laptop. i had called Apple to see if they could help me but i didnt really get the answers that i needed and i tried everything they said to do, except one thing. they also said for me to uninstall itunes and then reinstall it, but if i cant find those songs anywhere on my laptop then when i re-install itunes wont they be gone and not be put back on itunes or will this problem be fixed (im scraed to do this cuz i would rather see which songs arent playing and put them on itunes myself rather than itunes deleting them as if they were never there to begin with) i also want to download some new songs i got off itunes to my ipod, but im scared that if i plug my ipod in that all the songs that cant be located on itunes will then be erased off my ipod, and thats the last thing i want to happen considering its most of the songs i listen to and at least 120 songs. will that happen if i plug my ipod in? the ipod is already syncd to the itunes on my pc laptop, so would it automatically delete those songs off my ipod, bcuz it seems as if the songs that cant be located(on itunes and i cant find on my laptop) have dissapeared. this problem is really bothering me and it sucks that i cant listen to songs that i had even just bearly put on there. i just need to know if there is a way to fix this and what are the steps, and if there isnt then i really need to start getting my songs back on my own. it seems as if i have tried everything and there is no solution! please help!

I was so excited when I read the question and answer for "Why Can't iTunes Find My Songs?" Until I read on and realized first, it was only for Apple systems; and secondly, it does not resolve my particular problem. I have searched for the locations of the songs that cannot be played and I find this:

All the songs are listed in the iTunes Music folder. All the songs that iTunes can play are located in their own folders under each artist's name. The songs that cannot be played are also listed under the their respective artist's name, but only as stand-alone files and not within a folder for that artist. This includes over 300 titles, so it would be an enormous job to refile each one individually. Any help with this?

A couple months ago, I had to have my computer fixed and updated. I had the IT people from my work do it, they really cleaned it up nicely HOWEVER, I went to play my music videos in itunes, they're all listed under music video's... but it tells me it can't locate the video, when I search under itunes, it's not there to choose.
I asked the IT guy at work.... he said something probably got switched?? Anyway he'll check it remotely but wants to charge me another $55 dollars for 1/2 hour. Do you know what I need to do? He made it sound like it was something I shouldn't touch. The reason I hate to push it is because they did all sorts of work on my computer... and didn't charge me full price... but I still want all the video's I bought.

Hi Dave,
Can you please help me?
I've gone through and checked the songs that I would like to sync to my ipod but when I go in to the music section of my ipod and select 'only sync selected songs' Itunes shows 0 songs.
When I change the selection to 'sync entire music libarary it shows as many songs as can fit on my ipod.
So when I've got the selected songs setting and I click sync, it's done in 1 second and no songs are loaded on to my ipod.
I'm getting quite frustrated because I went through all my music and selected the songs that I wanted to have and now it's not working ...
Please help!

I have 4300 songs on my iPod, and everything was synced. Then, I tried to rename some things for consistency. For instance, some recordings I imported listed the composer as "Ludwig Van Beethoven." Others listed him as "Beethoven, Ludwig." Yet others put him in allcaps (LUDWIG BEETHOVEN). So I started going through my "composer" column in my iTunes library on my computer and retyping everything by Beethoven as "Beethoven, Ludwig." I did this for other composers, as well, to make them consistent. I ended up making about 2200 changes. Ever since, my IPod starts to sync, and then quits saying "the required folder cannot be found." Sometimes, it says "the required file cannot be found." Yet, it is still listed correctly in my computer's iTunes library, I can easily play it through iTunes on my computer, and it's in the same iTunes/Media/Music folder where it's always been.

What's happened, and how do I fix this??????

Posted by: Micah at January 24, 2011 8:17 AM

Micah, sounds like you might have confused iTunes. :-) What I would do is "Restore" the iPod, then copy all the music back onto it from your iTunes library.

Different, but related, question. I have 10,000 tracks on iPod, both purchased on iTunes store and uploaded from CDs I own, conveniently filed by. . . um. . . no method at all in my basement. Macbook crashed, replaced HD, re-installed apps and restored data from external HD backup that was only 24 hours old (so proud!). Now although my iPod still has all its files, my iTunes library doesn't. Lots o' files get the ol' exclamation point. Those files can't be found on internal or backup hard drives. They may still be on old iTunes-only compressed CD backups, which I am afraid to restore in case they delete any files that postdate themselves. Would they do that? And HOW did this data get lost? It was on my HD prior to the crash. I always had Time Machine set to back everything up, not omit anything.

Hi Dave. My problem is that I have a folder with music in it. When I first tried to copy the songs to my iPhone 3GS, it would not work. My son said that it was because the songs were all WMA files and that I needed to convert them to mp3. I duly did this but when I try and copy them into the iPhone, all I get is that the files cannot be found? I then also need to try and understand how to edit the iTunes folder on my phone. I would like to shorten the names of the songs and delete some things that just take up space! Can you assist me?

Hello..all of a sudden when I download a song drag it onto my desktop right click, hit "open with" -> "iutnes" the song plays then I go back to delete the file from off of my desk top, I go back to play the song and I get an error message saying "file not found". I've had itunes for about 5 years now and have been doing the same routine to my music now all of a sudden this is happening, and my desktop is filling up with music files that I can't delete or even move into a music folder because I'll get the "file not found" error message...can you please tell me why this is? And whether or not I should delete my itunes, and start over and if doing so would even fix my problem? Thank you=]

Hi, I REALLY need help with my iTunes music. I have a Macbook. I think I did something studpid. I moved my music files from the iTunes music folder into the trash, but I never deleted my trash. I then decided I didn't want to delete them, so I moved them back into the iTunes music folder, from where they originally were. Now,I have hundreds of songs with exclamation points that will no longer play because iTunes cannot "locate" the file.

Someone, PLEASE HELP! My music is my world and I can barely play any songs..

Earlier this year I purchased a song from Itunes. I have purchased 150 songs in the past. When I went to my "purchased" playlist in itunes it only showed the 1 recent purchase. All of my purchased songs do appear in the library but not under "purchased" Just in the library. I only have one "purchased"playlist in itunes and it only shows 1 song. In the past all 150 songs did show up under the "purchased" playlist. Somehow they got moved out of there.

I then sync'd with my ipod classic. It shows I have two "purchased" playlists.. one with 150 purchased songs and the other with the most rescent 1 song.

I have a pc running XP. Please help.

Hi is there a way I can add "Grouping" or "Comments" to the "Sorting" tab in iTunes.
I like to group songs with the same/similar rhythm tracks like Micheal Jackson, SWV and Chris Brown versions of Human Nature and need an easy way to find them.
If not then is there an easy way to transfer information in the "Comments" field to the "Composer" field.

I had installed music from CDs that I had purchased over the last 30 years. I still purchase Cds and don't use itunes for that purpose. After all these years, I'd thrown away bulky CDS because I had my music on my computer. Imagine my surpise when I just synced my iphone to find that itunes deleted most of my f**king songs! Thousands of them that I will never have again. F**kers! How can they go about erasing music that doesn't belong to them - because it wasn't purchased through them. This should be illegal.

I have an older ipod and just bought a new ipod touch for my son. The problem is, now that I put my son's ipod touch on my itunes, now it won't recognize my old ipod and subsequently, all the songs are gone from the old one (although they are still in my itunes account and on the new ipod touch.) Whenever I try to connect the old ipod now to re-sync it, it says that there is "no disc in drive k" and it won't recognize it. Is this because the new ipod touch must have the same name as my old one? And how do I change this so I can get my stuff back onto my old ipod. I don't need the stuff on my son's--I would rather set up a different itunes library for him. I am sooo frustrated!!! Please help!

I have windows 7 64 bit. But the question is, if I get a new version of iTunes, is all my music going to disappear? Sure I have them in a library, but iTunes being what it is, I have had to hand-fix the info for many songs to get them to present right. So if I reload them, they're going to need their information hand-fixed again. No Way am I going thru that. Can you please help? Thank you - Karen

I just downloaded the new OS for my iPhone 4 and lost all my music. I figured I might, so I'm not seriously stressed if I can't get it back. The biggest concern is that now, 'my' library shows heaps of country music that I never got. Is it possible that someone else is using my account without me knowing? I haven't had any fraudulent charges or anything, just the 312 songs (~25 albums) that came up out of nowhere. What should I do??

Thanks!!

Okay, so i ended up having my laptop wiped. Which in return deleted all my music and video's etc. But my Ipod continued to actually have all the music. What i did was pay for Diskaid which allowed me to take all of it off and place it back into iTunes but it changed all of my songs int 4 to 5 lettered names and its quite upsetting. I search for the music names, to solve the problem. Incidentally it doesn't work i get "The CDDB is not available for some of these items" is there any way of fixing this or no?

Thank you sincerely Chirt

i have found a probable soultion. Might have you tinkered with your itunes section where it says " convert higher bit rate songes to 128kbs AAC" well just unclick that and it should work.
