Where's this NotePad application?

A reader sent me the following question:
"I recently purchased your book Creating Cool Websites with html, xhtml, and css. When I arrived to chapter 2 and you said to go to note pad, I followed your instuctions and I couldn't find it. So I went to run and typed in notepad and BAM! it pulled up.

You say to save it to your desktop, if I do that will the program always run from there? Should I seek out a tech to move the program to where you said I should of found it. "

Dave's Answer: First off, I'm puzzled why you can't find NotePad. On Windows XP Pro, it's either in Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad (if you're in Classic mode) or Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad. If you're not finding it in either location, I'd be surprised!

Secondly, I think you misunderstand what I say in the book (or I misrepresented my own thoughts, one of the two): what I am trying to say is that you should save the HTML file on the Desktop while you're building it. NotePad should stay where it is and certainly shouldn't need to be moved. Better, once you've edited the file with NotePad the app should automatically be launched if you simply double-click on the file icon.

So the good news is that you can wait to call that tech with a more challenging question and proceed with these two tips herein. Good luck!

"I am currently into the 2nd chapter of ...Cool Web Sites...
I am a mac user and was unable to save TextEdit files as html. Should I be using a different html editor, or could it be that I am not using the one I have correctly?"

I can't imagine why you cannot do so. Make sure that you specify the filename suffix too, so enter "mypage.html", not "mypage".

I can't open Microsoft NotePad with my version of Windows. Windows ME. I have typed it into the "Run" bar in the start menu, and I have dble clicked on the notpad icon in the programs file.

What should I do? and can I download a version?

Brian, I'd pop over to http://www.download.com/ and search for "NotePad". You'll find lots of replacements. However, I don't know how many will work on Windows ME...

I have something to say, now that you mention it, but ...
Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you for all your efforts on this Web site by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
