Where is my Mac OS X profile picture stored?

This might sound silly, but I would really like to get a hold of my profile picture, that I took when I first got my mac. I have looked almost everywhere on the machine, and I can't seem to get it from System Preferences either. I'm just really scared of messing something up, like deleting it etc.

Dave's Answer:

That's an interesting question! You should be able to find your profile picture within the System Preferences application, under "Accounts". Let's have a look...

Start with the Apple menu on the top left and choose "System Preferences".

Now click on "Accounts", which should be on the fourth row of icons.

Here's what you'll see:

If you put your cursor into the box that contains your image, watch what happens:

Cool. A secret menu! Click on the triangle and you'll see a ton of possible profile icons show up...

More importantly, you'll see "Edit Picture...". That's what you want. Select it. Now you'll see your icon in a bigger form:

Now the fun part. Since you can see your icon / profile picture / photograph in its original form, let's just grab a screen capture of it by pressing the weird key combination of Cmd-Shift-4. It's like Cmd-Shift-3, but instead of capturing the entire screen, puts up a crosshair and lets you click and drag to define the region to capture:

When you're done, poof, you'll have a perfect copy of your profile picture ready to email, save, store, upload to Facebook, whatever.

Hope that's helpful!

Right, this works. But where is the actual image file stored within the system? It would have to be in /Library to be accessible from the login window. But where?

You can also copy the original image from:
~/Library/Images/iChat Recent Pictures

(But I understand your answer as the user was 'just really scared of messing something up, like deleting it etc.')

Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you for all your efforts on this Web site by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
