What are the most common search terms?I realize that it's probably not something suitable for a family Web site, but I'm still curious: what are the most common terms or phrases that people type into search engines? Alright, let's have a look at this one! You're right, though, this isn't really suitable for a G-rated site. So let's do this first... Warning: this entry is not suitable for children!
Still with me? Okay, then your prurient interests have prevailed! :-) According to one of my favorite keyword research sites, Wordtracker (which I write about at length in my Google book too), the twenty-five most commonly used search phrases in the last 60 days are:
Pretty amazing what people seek online, isn't it? Just when we thought that the Internet was going to spread enlightenment and help reinvent journalism, customer/business communications, and more, it turns out that we're all looking for the same thing that our cavemen ancestors sought: love and intimacy, or at least a good time tonight. Sadly, it also says a lot about the demographic of searches that there are only two men in this top twenty-five list (Enimem and 50 cent, the stage names of two rappers), but there are a bunch of women who are frequently in the gossip columns: Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Carmen Electra, Jenna Jameson, and Pamela Anderson. It's all about the cult of celebrity (and if you don't know what I'm talking about, you should read Daniel Boorstin's provocative book The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America). Not all is lost, however, when poetry, games, dogs and mapquest show up in this top twenty-five list too, I suppose. Still...

Hey Dave, That's a good short list. I get a grip of comment spam for hentai, #5 on your list. Posted by: Buck at March 13, 2007 6:29 PMG'Day Dave.I came here hoping to find some search terms that may help in my never ending quest to make honest clean and proper websites but it seems the real profitable sites are the ones A lot of us are not willing to create..paris hilton well what can you say..anyway thanks mate..cheers from downunder..IIIILLLBBBBBACKKKKK Posted by: cheap notebook man at May 12, 2007 7:29 PMHey just a quick heads-up...50 Cent is a man also, so there are two men on this list. Both rappers. That's amazing. Posted by: A.J. at September 12, 2007 1:22 AMIt is very interesting to find out that most of the searches prove what Freud was trying to explain. It is very uncommon that intellectual people search for something on the net on something specific and thus I believe that as Karl Jung said "those who look on the outside dream, and those who look on the inside awake" so its like when people are searching they are searching what they cannot find on the inside. Posted by: Reuben Chircop at October 24, 2007 4:38 AMJust by looking at the comments on my blog, I could have come mighty close to compiling this list on my own (and would have been pretty close to accurate)! Posted by: Sandy Baker at February 15, 2010 7:04 PMThe first 30 entries? We are talking of millions of searches for each of those, I'm sure. But I'm certain if you look through positions 200-20000 of this list, porn will be of secondary interest. And you will find "Mozart", "Picasso", "Hitler", "God" and "modern socienty" next to "Beer", "Pets", "Chocolate" "Aliens" and "The Beatles" next to "rubber dolls", "Scat", "Mistress" and "hairy gays". It's a funny list. But not more. The internet is a door to all information you want. That less people search for "Pinochet" than for "nude" is not surprising, because every person has different interests. The one likes music, the other one politics, the other one arts. Or even all of them. But they all share sex and stuff. :) Posted by: Just someone at September 13, 2010 2:29 AMI have something to say, now that you mention it, but ...
I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
