What are RAR files for my Sony PSP?

Dear Dave, I have a PSP and I love it, but there is a problem: I am confused about .rar files or documents. What format is RAR and how do I unpack it? I've looked for downloads for my PSP but they are all in RAR format and I have no idea what to do with them once I download them. Please help!

Dave's Answer:

There are many, many different packaging and compression programs available nowadays, from the classic Windows ZIP format to the Mac "StuffIt" .SIT format to Linux .tar and .tgz formats. Figuring out which is which, however, isn't quite so easy and if your computer doesn't just magically unpack them when you double-click on the icon, trying to identify the right program to use can be darn tricky!

RAR stands for the friendly name "Resource Adapter Archive" (think "aRchive") and it's most commonly used in the p2p world, in my experience. One big benefit of the RAR format that makes it so popular for large file sharing is that it lets you split up very large packages into smaller, more manageable flies that are then seamlessly reconnected during the unpack process.

For Windows users, there are a number of RAR packages available, as a quick visit to Download.com demonstrates. Two of the best in class are WinRAR, which is fully featured and lets you create RAR archives, and ExtractNow, which is less capable, but free.

Mac users can use UnRarX or RAR Expander to open up these archive files (both are free), and Linux folk will find that RAR 3.50 for Linux does the trick (trialware, not sure how much registration costs).

That should get you started unpacking these files. Be careful, though: if you were to get a RAR archive and extract a file that was corrupted somehow and transfered it to your PSP, it could theoretically cause problems that wouldn't be covered under the Sony warranty.

Where can I download rar games for my PSP for free?

Posted by: Vaughn Parker at October 21, 2005 1:22 PM

are rar and iso the same format?
im trying to download games onto my psp with fast loader.07 and it needs a iso or cso file but when i download them , they say rar at the end of it!
can i still put them on my psp to play?

Posted by: chris at March 7, 2007 1:17 PM

RAR and ISO are definitely not the same. RAR is a data packing format that lets you break down really big files into small chunks that are safely transferred and reassembled. ISO is a "CD snapshot" (though it can be used for DVDs too) that lets you use a program like Roxio Toast and burn an exact bit-for-bit copy of a master CDROM. You can use RAR to pack and transfer an ISO image, but they're not the same thing...

You have to download Winrar (is the same as winzip), you install it, then yo uncompress the .rar, inside shure you have a psp compatible file to burn or whatever you want to do

pls what site can i download can i download free psp games for my memory card...thanks

Posted by: kells at May 26, 2007 4:36 PM

to all the people asking how to run the iso/cso on your psp first you need to have either firmware 1.5 with dev hook, or 3.03+ CUSTOM FIRMWARE (not one you get from sony) then you put the iso/cso into a folder on your memory stick called ISO in the main directory (the very first screen when you open the memory stick it should be right next to the psp folder). then to play it go to games and then to memory card which is at the bottom, if you did it right they will show up.

also don't listen to him pushing win rar and such to unpack RAR and TAR files, there is a program called 7Zip that is free unlike all the others and it opens them all.

I downloaded a psp game but not sure how to put it on my sony psp..

Posted by: Danielle at July 12, 2007 8:56 PM

Once you download a .RAR file unpack it to anywhere u want (as long as its a .CSO file) then put it in your memory card in the ISO folder in the memory card root (very first folder you have) To play the downloaded game you MUST have a game UMD in the PSP otherwise it will keep coming up with various errors

can you put a iso file into the ISO folder on your psp and still play it? and what happens when you download a game but their arent any .iso or .cso files but a whole bunch of .mst files which are covering most of the game files memory?:S

first of all is your psp a custom firmare or is it running the official sony updates?

(No-sony official)then to play ISO games you have to downgrade and update on custom firmare.

(yes-custom)-then upgrade to 3.71 M33 and carry on down.

okay the game files you have downloaded are games ISO files cut into smaller files for fast downloads so dont worry theyre just set up wrong.download and use that tool to combine the files together.

like i said the best firmware at the moment is 3.71 M33 you will need to download the 1.50 kernel add-on also.and also if possible upgrade your PSP to 3.71 M33-2 this will make things much easier.

Now that your PSP is able to play Homebrew and ISO files your set. After your game has been compiled with UMDGEN go on your PSP Memory stick and on the main folder that has the PSP folder and the VIDEO folder create one called ISO and put the game in there.

then lload your PSP and go to the Game memory stick folder and it should work

Happy playing
