USB Error on Samsung MP3 Player: Now What?

Dave, I have a Samsung YP-910GS hard drive mp3 player and it reciently stopped working. I tried to reload the firmware but when I connect it with USB the computer says unreckonized USB device. I know the hard drive is a 1.8" Toshiba, same as in the iPods, but it says the drive is an ATA drive? Is there a way I can check the disks for errors and repair it, if it is corrupted?

Dave's Answer:

Assuming that the processes are the similar to the Samsung 920 player, there are actually two pieces of software that are important for the computer to be able to make use of your player; the firmware and the driver files themselves.

Samsung YP910The firmware is the software that resides on the player. The drivers are a separate entity and are what Windows uses to recognize your player.

For example, when I go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove programs, what I see at the bottom is "YH-920 Drivers and utilities."

If you reloaded the firmware but not the drivers, you may still have a driver problem. Uninstall the software using the Add/Remove Programs window. Don't do this manually or using another "remove" tool as exists in some players. That will likely not get rid of everything. Then, take your CD or download the drivers and install them.

It is important to note that the instructions explicitly state not to plug the device in until prompted, or until the install process is finished.

The 920 also shipped with a program called "Recovery Utility" that resets the drivers and the firmware. If this shipped with the 910, this may help. I had to use this once because I disconnected the device without using "safely remove hardware." It takes about 20 minutes to run, but it did work.

That brings up another important note. Many of us use USB drives or other devices and don't bother with the "safely remove hardware" function (accessible in your system tray) without any ill effects. My USB drive, my old Rio MP3 player, and my cellphone all fall under this category. However, the Samsung hard drive players REQUIRE you to safely remove the device using Windows before unplugging it. If you don't do this, your player will crash. This has happened to me; they are telling the truth.

Many thanks to MP3 expert Jeff Lawley for his extensive help on this question

MY MP3 PLAYER IS SAYING "SYSTEM ERROR" WHAT DO I DO .

Posted by: claudia herrera at March 26, 2006 7:09 PM

Paul, I would feed that same query into Google adding the word "download" and see what you come up with.

Claudia, you might just need to reformat the disk to fix the problem: can you not restart your MP3 player (unplug the battery and leave it for for 24 hours, then put it back together) to get to that point? I am also wondering if your media has gone bad, perhaps??

my hard drive has problem
it says goto napster
but?
how can i fix

Posted by: d at April 13, 2006 8:40 PM

I'm not sure what to advise, "d". I would actually suggest that you call up the Napster folk and ask them how to get the player to work again??

Posted by: Dave Taylor at April 14, 2006 3:19 AM

Dave, my mp3 player has recently corrupted. I tried adding songs to the file but it says that, 'the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable' ive tried this with every song but it still says the same.

Do you know how i could fix it?

Thanks, Holly.

I have a Samsung MP3 player. I put a playlist on it from Napster. I also put some playlists on it from Windows Media Player 10. When I did that, the playlist names showed up from the media player but the playlist name from Napster disappeared. The music is still on there I just can't play it by selecting "playlist". Why did this happen and is there any way to fix it?

Hi there I have a Samsung YPZ5 and I am happy with it, though I do wish I had waited and bought one with a radio. Someone told me in the shop that it actually has a radio in it but it is not activated, but it is possible to activate this, is it true?

By the way, a great site

For those of you with a frozen YP 910:

On the left side of the player, on the hold switch, slide it up. (lock the player)

There's a tiny little hole there, now uncovered by the hold switch. Get a paperclip, and insert the end into it. That's your reset button. Your player should now be unfrozen.

My mom just bought a Samsung YP-Z5 to put "break" music on while she's playing at a wedding. I am in charge of making it work. However, I cannot figure out how to make the actual playlists. These are very important for this gig coming up and it's just not working. I've got all the music on there and when I go to sync or edit playlists it doesn't allow for different folders and also when I go into the actual player there is nothing under the playlists option, just under the music option. Please help. If you can't then I'm just going to have her take it back and get a better one.

Thank you.

I cant transfer music to my sansa c240 1GB mp3 player. I downloaded songs from napster to transfer to my mp3 player and every time I try to it says there was an error. Then finally I found a way to drag and drop the songs into the removable disk folder but now whenever i try to play the songs it says it needs to be synchronized in order to continue my music subscription. How can sync napster songs and transfer them to my mp3 and do use windows media player to do it?
